Stockton serves as an excellent gateway to camping adventures near the Bay Area. To the east, Stanislaus National Forest invites thrillseekers to challenge the Tuolumne River for 27 miles of whitewater rafting, while the Pinecrest Lake Loop is prime for hikers who want to take it easy and enjoy lake and granite cliff views. Dozens of Stanislaus campgrounds accommodate tents with amenities like picnic tables, drinking water, and seasonal vault toilets. Some RV sites have paved pads for trailers up to 50 feet in length. Also nearby, Calaveras Big Trees State Park lives up to its name with gigantic natural wonders. A must-visit? The North Grove and South Grove of giant sequoia trees towering up to 250 feet high and 25 feet in diameter.
