The best camping near Miquelon Lake Provincial Park guide

Overview

About

Miquelon Lake Provincial Park provides year-round access to nature through its spacious campsites, sandy beach area, and a vast trail system. While campers love spending days exploring the hiking trails or playing basketball at the day-use area, we think Miquelon shines its brightest in the darkest hours of the night. Nestled in the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve, here you can stay up watching stars and counting constellations. The sole Miquelon Lake Campground is large, offering private spacious sites suitable for tents and RVs. Looking for something more luxurious? The park has four comfort camping yurts available for rent.

Notable Camping Spots

  • Best for glamping: The comfort camping yurts offer the beauty of the outdoors with the comforts of a bed.
  • Best for winter camping: Miquelon Lake Campground is open year-round for camping, cross-country skiing, and skijoring (skiing with dogs!).
  • Best for stargazers: On a clear night, take the fly off your tent and sleep under the Milky Way.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. With more than 270 serviced and unserviced sites, securing a campsite at Miquelon Lake Campground is usually a breeze. However, reservations are required from May through September.
  2. Winter camping is first-come, first-served, but no need to rush, as you won’t have competition for a prime site.
  3. The comfort camping yurts are a hot commodity, especially on holidays and weekends. Make your reservation as early as possible or keep an eye out for mid-week openings.
  4. Reservations for both the campground and the yurts can be made online, by phone, or in person at the park's Information Centre.

When to go

Miquelon Lake Campground might be Alberta’s best kept secret. No matter what time of year you visit, you likely won’t encounter big crowds. While summer and fall are lovely for a hike or a paddle across the lake, we can’t get enough of this park in winter. Enjoy skiing along the Miquelon Lake shoreline or wind through 20 kilometres of backcountry trails—there are trails suitable for all ski levels. Another bonus of winter camping: the stars come out super early!

Know before you go

  • Swimming is not recommended at Miquelon Lake due to poor water conditions. Try bird watching along the lake instead.
  • Miquelon Lake Camp has four wheelchair-accessible sites, three of which have power. There are also wheelchair-accessible shower buildings onsite.
  • Winter campers must bring their own water. Water services, including flush toilets, are not available from early September until late April.
