"The host thought of everything - every little touch and comfort to make it feel so cozy and glamping-perfect." "The fire pit and chairs outside were excellent, and the stove inside kept it so cozy and warm in there. Plenty of firewood, lighter, blankets, water & lights - we wanted for nothing!" "It felt very remote and we could hear the water all night, but it’s actually not remote and so we appreciated that the camp was gated at night." "Such a great place!! We are going to recommend it to all our friends and can’t wait to get back. Thanks to Neal for being an excellent host when we arrived!!"

Sacred Falls Sanctuary

2 sites · Lodging35 acres · Amboy, WA
If life or the city feels like too much right now…escape to our incredible sanctuary with six powerful waterfalls, 35 acres of farm and forest to roam, stunning vistas, and the blessing of solitude to bring you back in touch with the magic of nature, and the quiet longings of your soul. Sacred Falls Sanctuary is a special place unlike any other, which you’ll experience when you’re standing in front of our lower Grotto Falls, feeling the cool, misty wind blowing across your face, or slipping into the grotto pool at the top of the falls, carved from the solid rock, surrounded with moss and dripping water. Or perhaps you’ll feel it while meditating inside our small cave, feeling like you’ve stumbled into the land that time forgot. If you need a sanctuary, a place of retreat, some calming and healing solitude, this is the place for you. The land around Sacred Falls Sanctuary was one of the original pioneer homesteads on this traditional Cowlitz tribal land. Besides our magical falls and forest, we also have some bucolic farm vistas across our wide open pastures, including a small apple orchard, and our giant 120-year old barn that still stands from the original homestead, and shelters our animals in winter. If you like animals, we have a horse, pony, four sheep, four goats, two cats, and two dogs who make their home here, too. We also have lots of wild animals, especially eagles and hawks that can be seen over the back pasture. These are very visible from Eagle Island, which has some of the tallest firs on the land that birds of prey like to perch in. We also have gardens, and wild edible plants in the forest, including oxalis and chanterelle mushrooms. In August, we’re practically a u-pick blackberry farm. This is a super rustic but still working farm, which means it has giant hunks of old rusting tractor parts randomly moored in the grass, and various kind of practical but not always beautiful fencing, which includes electric fences. If you don’t know what they look like, our electric fences look like flimsy white nets, but they will lightly zap you if you touch them, so steer clear! I am not the ‘owner’, but the steward for this land; I’m also queer, trans, and an indigenous shamanic practitioner. If you appreciate the idea of supporting Native people and ventures, I’m happy to have you here. I hold this land and water as sacred, and these elemental beings as our first healers, and I love being able to share the healing power of this place with folks like you.

River, stream, or creek tiny homes near Washougal guide

Overview

Set on the Columbia River, Washougal blends Pacific Northwest beauty with small-city comfort. Known as the “crossroads to discovery,” the city offers easy access to notable parks and forests for unique nature escapes. An eastbound scenic drive along the river brings campers to Beacon Rock and Columbia Hills Historical State Park, packed with historic hiking trails, fishing opportunities, and picnic areas. Further inland, Gifford Pinchot National Forest encompasses over 1.3 million acres of land, iconic trails, and volcanic mountains. Pitch a tent, pull up the RV, or rent a cabin in Washougal’s nature-diverse lands. Campers will find well-outfitted campsites with full hookups and fire pits, or primitive sites offering plenty of solitude.

Where to go

Beacon Rock State Park

Travel to Beacon Rock State Park to hike Beacon Rock Trail—a 1.8-mile loop up Beacon Rock. The rock is an 848-foot basalt column featuring switchbacks and views of the Columbia River Gorge. Then, set up shop along the Columbia River shoreline, where campers can find standard campsites, full hookups, and horse camping available. Enjoy fishing, paddling, or swimming steps away from camp. Despite seasonal closures at the main campground, primitive and equestrian sites are open year-round. A Discover Pass is required to enter the park, or a day-use fee can be paid at one of the park’s automated machines.

Columbia Hills Historical State Park

Dramatic cliffs and petroglyphs pave the way for an epic stay at Columbia Hills Historical State Park. Featuring four unique areas, Columbia Hills blends desert-like terrain with lush vegetation. Campers can explore Native American pictographs and petroglyphs at Horsethief Lake—one of the largest concentrations in the Pacific Northwest. Then, find standard campsites, partial hookups, hiker/biker campsites, and rustic cabins on the grounds, along with one restroom and a dumping station. Note that the campground runs on a first-come, first-served basis and fills up quickly in spring.

Gifford Pinchot National Forest

The Pacific Crest Trail, Ape Cave lava tube, and Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument are just some of the natural attractions at Gifford Pinchot National Forest. It hosts over 1.3 million acres of dense forests, deep valleys, mountain peaks, and waterfalls. Cabin rentals, dispersed camping, and RV campsites with a range of hookup options, firepits, and picnic tables offer a chance for campers to stay and play. Seasonal activities like summertime swimming and winter snowmobiling draw campers in year-round.

When to go

Summers are short and warm, reaching average highs around 80°F. Temperatures begin to cool in late September. Winters in Washougal are wet and cold, with temperatures dropping below freezing and high chances of snowfall from December to February. Those camping in winter should come with an understanding of cold-weather camping and preparations.
