Accessible by car or canoe, East End at Seven Islands provides endless fun for the whole family, including your well behaved off-leash dogs. When you arrive take a cooling dip in a quiet “river pool”, relax on your private beach, or see if the fish are biting. Let your kids experience the best the river has to offer by exploring the shallows for crayfish, chasing minnows, or watching for Bald Eagles patrolling the river. Your site is approximately 2 acres, so you will have your choice of where to pitch a tent or place your camper or trailer. Spend your nights stargazing, enjoying a campfire (remember to bring s’mores ingredients), or fishing for catfish. This is an ideal family-oriented campsite about an hour NW of Richmond. With some of the best smallmouth bass fishing the James River has to offer, this is perfect stopover for a take out at the New Canton/Bremo Bluff boat landing 4 miles downstream. Enjoy an overnight or a couple of days. The 2 acre campsites are on an elevated sand and gravel bar on the north and south shores of Big Island. There's ample room for multiple tents and boats. Pools and slow moving water to cool off after your float down, and a great place for catfishing and watching satellite fly-bys at night. Plenty of Bald Eagles, Ospreys, and just about all of Virginia's animals inhabit this section of the James.  Enjoy the scenery!  KNOW BEFORE YOU BOOK and GO  1. Check out river levels, forecasts and warnings. There can be class 1 and 2 rapids (and more) depending on river height. Very experienced paddlers only once the river gets above approximately 5.0 feet or so at Scottsville. The host will gladly rebook your stay should the river height not be safe for your group. Check James River height at Scottsville or other reputable data source.  2. You must take the south channel (some call it "River Right") as you approach the Seven Islands chain to access  Campsite 1. Lacie and her family were extremely friendly, helpful, and welcoming. The tent campsites felt super private, the land is beautiful. They provided us with treats to feed the horses, they keep fishing and cooking equipment in their barn for you to use. They even hooked us up with some cooking oil when we forgot ours. Only minutes from town but you feel like you're worlds away out there. They sent us off with a fresh dozen eggs and smiles. We had an amazing time and will absolutely be back.

We love camping at Moon & Julie's. This must be our 6th time. The solitude and on site hiking trails are perfect for us. Plus, it's not too far a jaunt to see the local historical areas, scenery, and nearby apple markets etc. You'll have acres to your self. We stay in Persimmon Patch #1 in the open grass area. It gives our dogs space to play and sun on our solar panels to keep things charge. We highly recommend staying at Moon and Julie's Hawthorne Hollar.

My friend and I stayed at the "Hillside lakefront near Beach" campsite. I liked the site because it was very private. The site sits behind the goat and chicken farm, so be preppared for them to roam around your site. They generally didn't bother us, however the roosters did wake us up at the crack of dawn, as they're known for. The site was spacious, had a table and fire pit, beautiful lake views, and was a short walk from the kayaks. The site was a 30 minute drive from Pleasant Grove Park, which had miles of easy, scenic hiking trails. Charles and Steven were very responsive and explained to us where our site was, where to find additional firewood, the kayaks, the porta-potty, dumpster, and the general layout of the property.

This was our second time camping at Phantom Hill and it has easily become our absolute favorite place to camp as a family! Kathryn is truly a wonderful host who has thought of everything to make the experience simply phenomenal. We previously stayed at the Hummingbird campsite but this time we decided to try Waterthrush and it was just as lovely! We loved the string lights and hammocks, and it’s so convenient having a grill, chairs and tables all available to use! The forest is so beautiful and we loved walking the trails and my kids especially loved the treasure hunt! It was so cool seeing the mushroom farm too! As if there isn’t enough to do, they even have an Imagination Station where the kiddos can paint rocks and play games! This place is just MAGICAL. ✨ Kathryn is always such an accommodating host! When my husband and I realized we had a hole in our air mattress we brought, I texted Kathryn about renting a mattress pad and she was there in minutes! She goes above and beyond for her guests! Also highly recommend purchasing the natural soap from the Honor Shop. It smells amazing!!! Weekend Trip to Phantom Hill Forest Retreats
My group had a wonderful time camping at the Hummingbird site this weekend! The space was fantastic with plenty of tent space and areas to sit around the fire. We ended up using the grill and picnic table for dinner before roasting smores over the fire. I would 100% recommend.

We thoroughly enjoyed our campsite. We had site #2, a little peninsula that juts out into the lake. There were several spots that we could have pitched our tent, but we decided to pitch it right on the peninsula, surrounded on 3 sides by water. If you want more of a windbreak, you can camp closer to the firepit. The campsite was nice and cleared, surrounded by large trees, and had a nice picnic table. We didn’t end up using any of the provided boats but did use the porta potty, which was very clean. There is a big dumpster on site to dump your trash. Would highly recommend this place. Not totally secluded (we could still hear our neighbor’s music and talking in the distance, but also not crowded at all. It’s a nice in between. Glad we had a 4-wheel drive truck, so just take it slowly on the road that runs the perimeter of the lake to your spot. Our host was very responsive.

What a beautiful spot. We were lucky that our site was close to the access road, some of the sites are better accessed by cars with more ground clearance. Charles showed us two spots to get water and directed us to the Portopotty. The site was clean and had a firepit as well as a picnic table. The views of the water were beautiful. Loud site neighbors were our only downside, but that’s not a permanent feature! We hope to come back next year.

Check out river levels, forecasts and warnings. There can be class 1 and 2 rapids (and more) depending on river height. Very experienced paddlers only once the river gets above approximately 5.0 feet or so at Scottsville. The host will gladly rebook your stay should the river height not be safe for your group.
