Here you'll find supermarkets, a hardware store, an auto parts supplier, and even a few small restaurants. While most people just stop here en route to more woodsy terrain, the town itself offers a few spots to get close to nature as well, including the John Neal Memorial Park on the Santiam River, the pond-facing Lyons City Park, and nearby Shellburg Falls.

GeerCrest Farm was settled by the Geer family in 1848, and is still owned and stewarded by the family. The house Ralph and Mary Geer built in 1851 stands and is one of the oldest in Oregon to remain in the same family. The farm features creeks, forests, pastures, orchards and gardens as well as the historic buildings. Currently we have four friendly sheep and a small flock of Mallard ducks to keep us company. The Pioneer Memorial Orchard features over 50 vairieties of pre 1850 apple trees. The Heritage Grove has ten fruit and nut trees that were recognizeds as a memorial the the early pioneers of the nursery trade by Oregon Heritage Tree program. The 20 acre property, offers three tent camp sites Including the Tree House site, as well as two forest cabins and a small forest bunkhouse (sleeps 6). Our peaceful, small farm offers a reflective immersion in nature and history among the occasional quacking of ducks and baaas of sheep. The scenery from all corners of the farm is incredible - a favorite is the westward view of the valley pasture at sunset -- called "Homer's View" after famous political cartoonist and Geer descendant, Homer Davenport. No matter which camping site you choose, the sounds of the creek, pond frogs, or conversing owls are sure to lull you to sleep. Feel free to roam the farm, but always leave gates as you find them, open or closed. Please say hello to our sheep and barn cats (they may say hello first). Explore the Heritage Grove of historic trees, the Memorial apple orchard and pear glade with varieties circa 1840s, indulge your senses in our medicinal herb garden, and chat with our farm family while they water the veggie gardens, if you so wish! This standalone space rests 30 feet above the forest floor and is perfect for reconnecting with nature and getting away from real-life. Incredible. Memorable. Picturesque. Camping & exploring, for all ages!!! Five stars, triple AAA, two thumbs up for any family wanting a safe, educational, fun camping experience. Our family of six includes a set of curious (mischief finding) 6yr old twins, a 10yr old girl who just loves to run and play and learned she also loves feeding sheep, and our 14yr old who couldn’t resist the charm and excitement of sleeping in the treehouse. Jim is a gracious communicator, making sure all of our pre-arrival questions were answered. He greeted us on arrival making sure we knew he was available and then gave us all the space and quiet we could want. Our kids had an absolute blast between the friendly sheep, the swing, and orchards — they only stopped playing to eat and sleep! We felt completely at ease letting them roam free. No doubt, we stumbled across an absolute GEM of Oregon’s; rich with history, with tons to explore, see and taste!

The treehouse was a fun overnight experience and GeerCrest Farm is an amazing and beautiful piece of land. My 6 year old daughter loved the friendly sheep, exploring the duck pond surroundings and tree swing. Jim was a wonderful host and I really enjoyed chatting with him and hearing about the properties’s history.

We loved this campsite! It had beautiful grounds, a treehouse house for the kids to play in, and a covered structure in case you need some shelter from the elements. The composting bathroom was clean and easy to use. And we loved the visits from the sheep! We highly recommend staying here.

Jim was an excellent host and was on the property to help with anything we needed, even purchasing firewood on-site. It was a beautiful area. It has room enough for parking by the treehouse, a couple of tents, and sleeping in the treehouse. The latrine was clever to put wood shavings to not emit an odor. Beautiful area.

Where to go

Along the Santiam River

Lyons offers easy access to outdoor recreation and camping along the Santiam River, which attracts anglers with its variety of salmon and trout species. Popular spots in the area include the North Santiam Recreation Area, Buell-Miller County Park, and the Santiam State Forest.

Detroit Lake and Around

The Santiam River spills out into the Detroit Reservoir, a massive lake that’s popular with water-sports enthusiasts and campers alike. The area around the reservoir is full of campsites and trails, most within the Mount Hood National Forest, and is home to the Breitenbush Hot Springs retreat center.

The Silverton Area

The area just north of Lyons, near the small city of Silverton, is full of places to explore, including the Oregon Gardens and Silver Falls State Park, known for its dense collection of waterfalls. The Bavarian-inspired town of Mount Angel is also nearby; come in mid-September to experience its annual Oktoberfest celebrations

When to go

Lyons is in the Willamette Valley, which has a relatively mild climate, with hot and somewhat dry summers and cool (but not cold temperatures) and plenty of rainfall the rest of the year. Summers here get busy, owing largely to the area’s close proximity to the densely populated Interstate-5 corridor, but things start to get quieter after Labor Day, when kids go back to school, particularly on weekdays.
