The best safari tents near Kahului

·
Tucked on the north shore of Maui, Kahului is an adventurer’s dream. Everywhere you turn, there’s a mountain, an ocean, or a forest reserve. Forget five-star resorts—camping is the best way to see Hawaii’s spectacular natural beauty. And, with Kahului’s warm climate, you can camp any time. Hop on the road to Hana for remote tent camping at Waiʻanapanapa State Park. At nearby Haleakala, Kipahulu and Hosmer Grove offer drive-up campsites with picnic tables. For a true Hawaiian trip, backpack into the wild to the Holua and Paliku sites. Be sure to bring drinking water, and plan to be without Wi-Fi or cell service. Closer to sea level, grab an oceanfront site at Papalaua Wayside Park. You’ll need to get a permit—they’re given on a first-come, first-served basis. When you need a new swimming spot, head to Kanaha Beach Park near the Kahului Airport. For low-elevation camping, expect warm weather and the occasional rainstorm. If you’re hiking high into Haleakala, however, warm clothes are a must. At night, temperatures can drop as low as 30 degrees!
