The first time I saw this beautiful heavily wooded 12-acre property, I immediately put in an offer. That was 18 years ago. I spent the next 11 years chasing corporate goals which I finally realized were inconsistent with my soul. I started a family and decided to sell this property. I brought my then 2 year old daughter here so she could see it once before I sold it. As we drove up highway 285 through vistas each more stunning than the last, I was moved to tears by the beauty. Or grab a coffee, pizza, snack or a glass of wine at the Gold Hill store. If you'd like a full service dining experience, make a reservation for a 5 course meal at the Gold Hill Inn. What To Do: Walk around the historic town of Gold Hill. We promise you will be entertained. Ask a local about the museum, the cemetery, or the historic two room school house, or any other favorite spots they have around the area. Love the woods and nature, but would like a little action? We had a surprise snow and were still warm and cozy using the heater to start the night and the comfortable bed did the rest. And we woke up to the beautiful snow in the trees! Jessica’s treehouse was very quaint and cozy. It was raining when we got there and in the nighttime it snowed! We kept warm ! Heating up the treehouse and then piled in the blankets. It was a great 68th birthday! The candles were so fun and the chairs comfortable. We strolled around town on a foggy day. Hiking st Caribou ranch was spectacular and golden.

Amy’s Treehouse was the perfect retreat spot. It’s 12 minutes from town, yet still feels like you’re dispersed camping with the campfire ability and seclusion amid Nederland’s forest. Would recommend this for anyone who wants a cozy, quaint stay without having to camp. Bathroom facilities were extremely clean too. We will be back! P.S. The husky was the cherry on top!

Where to go

Lake Granby

Lake Granby is Colorado’s third-largest body of water, and it’s just ten minutes outside of Granby. Boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing are popular activities on the lake and paddleboard rentals are available in nearby Grand Lake. Several campgrounds are located on the shores of Lake Granby from lakeside RV parks stacked with amenities to wooded National Forest campgrounds ideal for tent campers.

Rocky Mountain National Park

It’s only a twenty-minute drive to the Grand Lake entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park from Granby. On the western side of the park, you can see the headwaters of the Colorado River, hike to the old mining town of Lulu City, or drive the entire Trail Ridge Road to Estes Park. Timber Creek Campground is the closest campground to Granby in the park and it operates on a first-come, first-served basis only.

Winter Park

The mountain resort town of Winter Park is only 25 minutes south of Granby. It’s known best as a winter sports destination but in summer, Winter Park transforms into a summer playground for hikers, mountain bikers, whitewater enthusiasts, and more. The Idlewild Campground is just outside Winter Park off of Highway 40. The paved Fraser River Trail connects the campground to downtown Winter Park.

When to go

Granby is a bit under-the-radar as far as Colorado mountain town destinations making it a great alternative to Winter Park or Grand Lake during the busy summer season. Summer is the best time for paddling and fishing on Lake Granby and late September is the best time to see fall colors. The Grand Lake entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park is open year-round, but Trail Ridge Road only remains open to the Colorado River Trailhead in winter.

Know before you go

Granby has a grocery store, several outdoor gear stores, and restaurants. Stores are more oriented to locals in Granby compared to those in the tourist towns of Winter Park and Grand Lake.
Granby lies on Colorado’s Amtrak train route. Take this train east to Denver or west to Glenwood Springs or Grand Junction.
The Granby Ranch offers lift-served downhill mountain biking just south of town.
