Handy caravan parks await campers in this SA service town with historic appeal.
Whether you’re on your way to Adelaide or heading into the New South Wales outback on a road trip from South Australia, little Riverton is a convenient stopping point. It’s on the highway that cuts a course all the way from Adelaide to Sydney, and also smack dab between the wine-producing Clare and Barossa Valleys. Irrigated by the Gilbert River, Riverton is an agricultural service centre, so you can stock up on fresh produce here—ideal if you’re driving off into the outback. Stay at well-equipped Riverton caravan parks or a campsite or farmstay on rural land in the broader Gilbert Valley. Despite the town’s name, the Gilbert River isn’t always much of a feature here and can even dry up in summer, so don’t expect to set up camp beside a gushing waterway. But its presence provides the fertile green landscape you’ll see.
