Just a short drive from the border of Victoria, the small town of Penola sits at the heart of the Coonawarra wine region. Wine tasting is, naturally, the No. 1 activity, making vineyard and winery camping top-notch. Hike or cycle between the cellar-door wineries along the Vine to Wine trail, stopping off to sample the region’s famous reds or take a winery tour. Campers can choose a private tent campsite, check into a Penola caravan park (most of which have powered sites and plenty of on-site amenities), or rent a family-friendly cabin. Beyond the vineyards, the rest of the Limestone Coast is just a short drive away. At nearby Mount Gambier, you can visit Engelbrecht Cave, go scuba diving at Kilsby Sinkhole, or cool off with a swim at Little Blue Lake. Continue to the coast, where you can boat, camp, and fish around Lake Bonney or explore the surf beaches and coastal walks at Canunda National Park.
