Yabbie Farm Bush Camp

7 sites · RVs, Tents500 acres · Wilmington, SA
Come and camp on our sustainable yabbie farm! A 500-acre property that sits on an aquifer with unlimited fresh water. We have seven plus sites available for self-contained campers. You will need to be self-sufficient and leave no trace. You can pick your own spot and there is plenty of space - so you can be as secluded as you wish! All flat area We offer a yabbie catching experience, contact us first for availability, $30 per person. There are lots of bird species and wildlife here, as well as sheep roaming around. You are welcome to enjoy a controlled campfire, and there is free firewood available. Fresh water available. The property is located 12kms from the township of Wilmington, a sleepy country town boasting panoramic views (both Hancock's Lookout and Horrocks Pass) and some impressive walking trails through the Flinders Ranges in the area. In Wilmington, you will find a pub, a general store, coffeeshop and a variety of museums and a dumping spot. We, your hosts, Anjo and Rob, live pretty much self-sufficient here - with solar power, water, vegetables, fruit, eggs, chicken meat, sheep meat, yabbies and marron. Everything is recycled, and nothing goes to waste - what we and the chickens and the sheep don’t eat will go to the compost/worm farm. The compost is reused in the veggie garden, excess eggs are boiled and fed to the yabbies and chooks, excess veggies will go to chooks, ducks and sheep. We grow carrots to feed to the yabbies. It’s a great lifestyle and we love it! Our farm is a great homebase to explore the Flinders. Explore the views and walks around Mount Remarkable, Mount Maria and Mount Brown, as well as the amazing sunrises and sunsets and starry night sky. There is an abundance of nearby hiking and biking opportunities including Alligator Gorge. Seasonal farm produce available on request. Options available for longer stays. If you would like to have a hands-on experience on a sustainable farm you could stay for free for 2 weeks (we can be flexible) in return for some caretaking while we visit our grandkids on Kangaroo Island. Jobs would be feeding animals, collect eggs and water vegetables. Contact us if you are interested in caretaking. Hope to meet you all.

Wilkydoo Equine Connection

3 sites · RVs, Tents14 acres · Wilmington, SA
Your site will be near a dry creek bed near large trees in an open space where you may explore freely within the Creek Paddock which is about 5 acres. This is a horse property of about 15 acres, so getting close to a horse is a strong possibility. Sunset and sunrise on the Flinders Ranges are beautiful, as are the morning clouds when they push up over the ranges. Mt Remarkable and the range running northward is what you will see. You will be greeted by wildlife, including Kangaroo and Euro, bird life, and many smaller critters who may be surreptitiously checking you out. The site is located about 200 meters from the main house. This is a natural space so the ground is undulating. Vans and campers will be able to level without issue providing you carry items to help you with this. The access is year-round with the exception of extreme fire danger periods.

Shingleback Shack

1 site · RV, Tent1 acre · Port Pirie, SA
The Shingleback Shack is situated on a 1/4 acre costal block in Port Germein. It is only a 5 minute drive or 15 minute walk to the town centre, main beach and jetty. Otherwise you can explore the stunning Southern Flinders Ranges just a 15 minute drive from the block. You can either choose to bring your own bedding and stay in the shack or bring a caravan or tent and set up camp around it. The shack fits 1 - 2 people, and is an empty 1.2m x 2.4m room. The block is off gird, but there is access to water from a sink connected to a water tank. There is also access to toilets and showers both in the Port Germein town centre or at the local truck stop the Perry's Tinman just up the road. In town you can also access a RV dump point, and water tap if additional water is required. There are also bins located at the corner of Taylor's Road and Port Germein Road or in the town centre. Please take all your waste with you. I want to acknowledge that Port Germain sits on the land of the Nukunu People, who have native title claims in the area and the Flinders Ranges sits on the land of the Adnyamathanha people. I respect all elders past and present and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded. 10% of profit made from this HipCamp goes to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Pichi Richi Park

8 sites · RVs, Tents2000 acres · Quorn, SA
Pichi Richi Park is our family owned and operated property, 13km south of Quorn in the heart of the Pichi Richi Pass. We have plenty of campsites, including bush campsites that are secluded and private, along with campsites that are much closer to our bathrooms, group accommodation, kitchens and bush cabins. Here at Pichi Richi Park, there are a number of signposted walking tracks ranging in distance from a few km up to a 10km+ loop. The Heysen Trail comes through our property for nearly 7km and some of our own walking tracks link with the Heysen as it meanders through our property. You can also ride your mountain bike around and the Mawson Bike Trail is not far away. We have over 1,000 acres of land around our accommodation that we do not graze as we are allowing this beautiful piece of Aussie outback to return to its original and pristine state. We are not a caravan park, so all campers and caravanners that come here get a fair bit of space and nobody is on top of anyone else. Quorn is our local town and is 13km away to the north. Quorn has 2 pubs, a number of cafes and a little supermarket that is open from 7am to 8pm 7 days a week. Feel free check out our website at www.pichirichipark.com.au and we look forward to hosting you here one day at Pichi Richi Park.

Camping near Melrose guide

Overview

The oldest town in South Australia’s Flinders Ranges, Melrose acts as a gateway to unparalleled camping experiences. Mount Remarkable National Park offers a stunning backdrop to several campgrounds near Alligator Gorge where yellow-footed rock wallabies and wedge-tailed eagles roam. Top-notch mountain biking trails crisscross the area, including Greener Pastures, Big Rhua, and the 22-kilometre Melrose to Wilmington Rail Trail—which is suitable for beginners. Nearby, Telowie Gorge boasts otherworldly rock formations and dramatic rock faces cut through ancient quartzite. And The Dutchmans Stern Conservation Park features wild camping adventures amid scenic trails and panoramic views.

Where to go

Mount Remarkable National Park

Just outside of Melrose, camping at Mount Remarkable National Park is a great way to immerse yourself in South Australia’s diverse natural beauty. Choose between rustic walk-in tent camping sites and campgrounds at Mambray Creek with amenities for camper trailers and caravans, like toilets, hot showers, and picnic areas. Bushwalking through the native gum tree forests is a popular activity here, as the network of trails is suitable for various ages and abilities. For longer hikes, try the 960-metre summit or the 3.2-kilometre Alligator Gorge Loop to admire ancient geology and fossilised rock patterns.

Telowie Gorge Conservation Park

With a number of walking trails meandering around its impressive gorge, Telowie Gorge Conservation Park is one of the best places in South Australia to observe a variety of unique fauna and flora. Keep a lookout for peregrine falcons ripping through the sky, as well as emus, wallabies, and kangaroos among sugar gums, acacia, and native pine next to the deep-cut gorge. Visit in spring to see blooming wildflowers. While the park does not offer on-site camping facilities, there are private Hipcamps and camping grounds nearby.

The Dutchmans Stern Conservation Park

North of Melrose, The Dutchmans Stern Conservation Park appeals to outdoor enthusiasts who want to rough it. There are no designated campsites—instead, campers can choose their own secluded spot to pitch a tent or swag among the park’s steep ranges, although walk-in camping is only permitted outside of the summer fire danger season. The 10-kilometre Dutchmans Stern Hike invites bushwalkers to explore scrubland and rugged open woodland to see views of Spencer Gulf and Lake Torrens. Spot red kangaroos and chestnut-rumped heathwren among the sugar gums and white cypress-pines, then settle into a campground right outside the park.

When to go

The most comfortable time of year to camp near Melrose is in spring and autumn. Temperatures are more moderate, allowing for pleasant bushwalking experiences. The natural scenery is at its most abundant during these shoulder seasons, particularly the spring wildflowers. For mountain biking fans, the annual Melrose Fat Tyre Festival in June can be a major draw as well. However, winter temperatures during this time can be a bit chilly.
