Camp near this rural South Australian town on the long-distance Heysen Trail hike.
Georgetown, a couple of hours’ drive north of Adelaide, is a small town that was once on the railway line to nearby Gladstone. Now, it’s main appeal for campers is that it’s a stop on the long-distance Heysen Trail, a 1,200-kilometre trek that connects some of South Australia’s most beautiful landscapes. Travellers typically hike the trail in sections, camping and staying in huts and at tent campsites along the way. Georgetown camping is limited, but nearby sections of the Heysen Trail offer basic huts, and there are caravan parks in Gladstone, Crystal Brook, and Jamestown. Even campers who aren’t on the Heysen Trail might enjoy Georgetown’s rural atmosphere while passing through between Adelaide and Port Pirie, or to the gorge-ous Mount Remarkable National Park, just an hour’s drive away.
