Private River Camping. Teepee now available for an additional fee. We are in the city limits so ground / open wood fires are not permitted. Covered charcoal and Gas Grills only. We are walking distance from historical downtown Trinidad with many of its dispensaries, stores and restaurants. Reservations and cancellations are the responsibility of the camper and performed through hipcamp.. THESE ARE UNDEVELOPED, RUGGED CAMP AREAS WITH UNEVEN TRAILS AND DENSE BRUSH IN PLACES. OUR CAMP IS DELIBERATLY PRESERVED, DESIG FOR PRIVACY AND RECOMMENDED FOR MORE EXPERIENCED OR ADVENTUROUS CAMPERS. Our camp areas are surrounded by raw, undisturbed, wooded areas as nature designed them. This 1/4 mile stretch of river is also stocked with rainbow trout. Camp areas 1 and 2 are designed for one or two 3-person tents. Camp area 3 is slightly larger. Camp area 4 is the furthest, most remote and largest camp area available. It's about 500 feet from the parking area. Camp areas 1-4 are riverside and approximately 200 feet from parking and only accessible by walking one of our two camp trails. Camp areas 5 and 6 are larger sites and located in between the river and parking area. The entrance to camp area 6 is marked with an old rusted out t.v. and a rusted wheel and tire. Some find it humorous or even symbolic of their adventure. We refer to it as the retro site. Camp areas 7-10 are directly roadside, but drop down from the tree line into the woods. All sites are unique. There is a shared riverside area with waterfalls and swim area. Children 12 and under should wear life vest when near the river and be supervised at all times. Please be respectful of rock stacks, waterfalls and other campers. We stay on location to help in any way. The woods are somewhat isolated and not what one would expect given its very close proximity to downtown. We have a porta pottie and water is available at the house. We have added a 20 foot Teepee to encourage winter camping. Two 3 person tents are available to be set up within the Teepee. We are at a high altitude so remember to keep a beverage on you and stay hydrated. 420 friendly. We give everyone their space, but often end up wishing we had more time to hang out with the friends we make. Great place to get away and immerse yourself in nature without giving up access to the local amenities. If you leave bags of treats out, there is a possibility that the Raccoons may drag it off and leave packages everywhere. Gummies Bears are their favorite. If you see trash, please contribute or point it out right away so we can dispose of it. Glass was dumped here back around 50 years ago. Most isn't sharp. We continuously pick it up, but rains expose new pieces. We have never been cut and aren't very cautious. Just recommend being mindful. The river is usually down and clear, but higher and sandy in early spring. Views of Simpson's Rest and Fisher's Peak round out the Trinidad river camping experience. Simpsons Rest is public access and a must see! 😎👍

We came here after our orignal plans fell through coming from Texas. Dusty was very friendly and helpful with any questions. We planned on setting up our camp but due to it being 1030pm when we arrived, we decided to stay in the teepee Dusty offered and let me tell you - AWESOME EXPERIENCE! It did start snowing and got pretty cold but with the Heater it helped massively. Do make sure to at least bring 1 decent sleeping bag just in case the heater has issues or the bottle freezes and it won't fully turn all the way up. (Nothing anyone can do about that, didn't happen but things to consider/prep for)... but for the price and simplicity of the location definetly recommend to others and if we are ever driving thru this location again this will always be an included stop in my travel plans.

What an ideal Hipcamping spot, country camping in the midst of town, and Dusty was wonderful with his communications. Highly recommended.

Nice setting on the banks of the Purgatory River. Wonderful listening to the wind in the trees. Feels like being in wilderness. If light sleeper and do not enjoy traffic noise bring ear plugs to ensure a good nights rest.

We loved our stay at Purgatory Riverbottom. It was so nice to be able to stay in town yet camp at the same time. We were able to walk and ride our bikes into town and experienc all the conveniences of that. Dusty was so friendly and we were very appreciative of the opportunity to camp on his land. There is a port a potty, our site was almost perfectly level, they are all right near the river, and you are looking right up at the illuminated Trinidad sign! Thank you Dusty for the awesome stay. We hope to stay here again for a future trip.

This is an amazing campsite. Dusty, the host, was the most accommodating and generous fellow I've yet to meet running one of these (and I've been to quite a few over the years). The different sites are sufficiently rugged to get the full camping experience while being right there in the city. You really feel like you're way out in the woods while down in the camp grounds, but just a short (2-3 minute) hike from the parking area, and then another couple minutes to the closest gas station, or whatever else you might need in Trinidad. The occasional train or siren is the only thing to give it away, otherwise you feel like you're in the country. I cam across a medium doe and a LARGE fox while hiking the trails. The water is great to wade around in if you're hot (not deep enough to properly swim), and the little pools were fun to lounge in. 10/10, will definitely be going back.
