Styled after officers' tents of the 1860’s, this large bell-style tent is nestled among pine and spruce trees and old growth willows, beside a seasonal creek.  Accommodating 6 guests within its 16.5’ diameter, this spacious tent has a rain fly that keeps it cooler in the summer and warmer on cool nights, the interior is arranged around its single 9-1/2 foot tent pole that rises out of a small table.  This 100% cotton canvas tent has a floor, a large zippered door and screen door, along with 4 half-moon zip up windows and 4 ceiling vents, all of which are covered in no-seeum mesh to keep the bugs out while providing ventilation and airflow. The rear of the tent has a sleeping area, while the front has room for guests to gather, relax, have a drink, or just read a book. Please bring your own pads and sleeping bags.

Outside is fire pit barrel, a patio table with a couple of chairs, and a gas grill (bring your own 20 lb. propane bottle) with side burner for cooking up a camp meal.  If you would rather not cook there is Zoka’s restaurant 10 miles north in Pine, or Deckers Corner 9 miles south.  A portable toilet is a short walk away.  Plan on packing out your garbage, this keeps our camp bear-free.

The Colonel’s Tent is located on 40 acres of an historic ranch homestead that is surrounded on all sides by Pike National forest. For a casual hike, there are several miles of trails to explore within the ranch’s 160 acres. The trail enthusiast should know that the Tent sits close to the base of Little Scraggy Peak, with direct access at mile 5, of the 9.5-mile Little Scraggy Trail. Traveling either direction will take you to segment #3 of the Colorado Trail (for a 12.2-mile loop back to camp) and connects you with the extensive trails of the Buffalo Creek Recreation Area, southwest of Denver. The USFS’s Little Scraggy Trailhead is only a few miles away.

You might prefer rock climbing Little Scraggy or fishing the gold-medal waters of the South Platte River canyon below Cheesman Dam and the waters near Deckers. Many people enjoy kayaking on the North Fork of the South Platte downstream from nearby Buffalo Creek.

You can sleep soundly knowing you are secure behind a locked gate, inside 40 acres of fenced pasture. Potable drinking water is available from an onsite 270-gallon water tank. A short walk away is a portable toilet.

There is extremely limited cell service…for those with the right carrier, that stand in the specific spot, with the correct arm in the air and a tin foil hat…do not expect to have ANY reception.

It was peaceful, and the grounds were nice to walk around on. The little scraggy loop of of the property is very nice for hiking and for the avid mountain biker. The only drawback was the unevenness of the ground. It was tricky figuring out where to set up a cooking table. But we managed and will now be better prepared regardless of where we camp. The surrounding area is nice too! Plenty of opportunities for hiking and sightseeing!

My wife and I took our 2 month old on her first camping trip, and the Colonels tent was a great setup for that. It was very spacious, which was necessary for the amount of stuff we needed to bring! If there was no baby, you could easily fit 6 people in the tent no problem. Unfortunately it wasn't on the most flat ground, which I'm totally used to with normal tent camping, but expected a bit better with this.

The campground itself was OK. You're not super close to the road, but you can hear it pretty well from the site. It wasn't completely full when we were there, but the sites are fairly close together. While we didn't have any issues at all with our neighbors, that potential exists, and this is not a place to be if you're looking for solitude.

The full grill was a nice perk, although the utensil and grill itself were fairly dirty (to be expected). The firepit was nice and easy, with lots of wood easily accessible. Our firepit happened to have a bunch of trash in it, which wouldn't be so bad if it didn't include a lot of plastic. Not a huge deal, I just cleaned it up myself.

The water tank was great, and the port-a-potty was clean and fully stocked with TP.

Access to the Little Scraggy trail is literally right next to the site, and that was a great way to get into the woods. As with most trails in the area, its popular with mountain biking.

Overall the campground was easy to find and sufficient for our purposes, although for the price I think it could have been a touch better. It seemed to be utilized in a very family friendly way, which was perfect for us, and likely made for many happy little campers!

My friends and I stayed two nights in the Colonel’s Tent and enjoyed the ease of not having to set up and break down the camp. It rained a bit during our stay and having the larger space to retreat to a group during the storm was great! Terri was an excellent host and we would all definitely stay again.

As someone who goes primitive camping on the regular, Little Scraggy Colonel's Tent was nothing short of glamping luxury! The spacious tent included enough room for my partner and our dog to spread out our sleeping mats. The site amenities were super convenient, including a fire pit with plenty of wood on the property to use for our campfire, a well-kept and clean porter potty, and potable drinking water. Although we came prepared with backpacking meals, I highly recommend bringing something for the grill that was provided on the site! We chose to spend our evening going on a hike at the Little Scraggy Trailhead only a few minute drive away from the site. It was a nice, easy hike (depending on how long you go) that's part of the Colorado Trail and seemed excellent for mountain biking. I would definitely recommend this campground overall, especially since it's only about an hour from Denver.

Another angle of the lovely Colonel's Tent. You can see another one of the campground's tipis in the background.A short walk along the property brings you to this beautiful field of wildflowers and aspens, with rolling mountains in the background. The inside of the tent had a lamp hanging from the pole in the middle. The signage around the campground indicated clearly where to go, like our sign for the Colonel's Tent.

It was a great stay! The tent was awesome, the site had great amenities, and it was very easy to find. The only comment I have is to unzip the windows before people arrive, it was very hot in the tent. Outside of that, it was the perfect spot to take our daughter on her first camping trip. Would highly recommend.
