A small farm/homestead in progress. Rustic camping experience. Cell service spotty, but it's nice to disconnect sometimes! Please note that High Prairie Camp is at over 9k elevation, which means weather can be unpredictable so please check the weather ahead of time and prepare accordingly (especially by bringing warm clothes!) We do occasionally have mosquitoes so I would advise being prepared for that as well.

If there is not a fire ban in effect in my county, I allow campfires. We frequently have fire bans here. I would recommend a propane fire pit, they are always allowed. Also, GPS tends to take people on the "scenic route", it's approximately 20 miles of a washboard dirt road, beautiful but a little rough on car suspensions! I would recommend taking highway 285 through Fairplay, take highway 9 to Hartsel, get on hwy 24 go about 4 miles to CR 15/Elkhorn Rd. The camp is 4 miles down Elkhorn Rd. Take the 2nd entrance to Huerfano Dr on the left.

Big sky & beautiful views

We loved our stay at High Prairie. The view was so beautiful and Rachel was a kind, friendly host. We had plenty of open land to enjoy the games we brought for family time (corn hole, soccer, kites, etc.) and an open sky for star-gazing (sadly the weather was not cooperative for us, but it was still fun). Rachel and her husband are building their homestead there and she mentioned that they also plan to build out their campsites with more amenities which will be fantastic when it's all done. Right now, it's pretty barebones with just a table and a rock-ring fire pit, but it worked great for what we were seeking: a quiet place to see the night sky.

We did have a couple disappointments that others might want to be aware of as they book. 1) In our emailing back and forth prior to booking, we were told that we'd have the site further from the driveway (there are two campsites on the property), but when we got there, that site had been taken by another group. We were told we could move once they left, but I wasn't about to take our whole set up down and set it up again. It wasn't a huge deal, it's not like the driveway is busy, but I think it would be more helpful to be very clear about what site is where and which one you're booking and hold people to that. 2) The owners have two dogs that are quite friendly. I suppose this would be fine for people who love dogs, but we're not dog people and this was a source of frustration for us. In fact, on the first morning, as I was standing up in our tent looking out at the view, the bigger dog came tearing around the corner and when she saw me she jumped/lunged on our tent wall/window and tore two holes in it with her front paws. I'm sure if you're a dog-friendly camper, having dogs running around wouldn't be a big deal, but I would have preferred to have the dogs tied up and kept away from us.

Lastly, a few more things campers might want to be aware of: - Rachel said we could feel free to take a peek at their chickens and ducks, which our son loved. We really appreciated Rachel's open, friendly outlook to renting out and sharing her space.
- There is no grate for cooking over the fire, so we just brought a small propane burner for cooking food and heating water.
- You'll need to bring in your own water and toilet.
- There is a rooster on the property who begins to crow around 4:30 a.m., so be sure you bring your earplugs if you're a light sleeper.
- There are no trees, so it's quite hot when the sun's out. If you need shade, be sure to bring a canopy.
- They run a generator in the evening until about 10:30/11:00 p.m. It's not super loud, but just keep that in mind if you're wanting complete silence.

We took a short hike up the dirt road. This is our site from the hill. Simple campsite--fire ring and a place for a tent. Perfect!Gorgeous skies at sunset.Seriously such a beautiful view.

I just wanted you to know that we have made some upgrades this year and still improving all the time! Your input was helpful and I appreciate your constructive criticism. If you decide to come back this year maybe I can compensate you in some way for the damage to your tent?

Being that I had never left the east coast and I was an inexperienced camper, Rachel and her camp couldn’t have been more perfect! She was super nice and hospitable and the land is beautiful.

Very happy we found this location. Great communication from the host, and site was more than what we expected. The views are beautiful! Our 1st trip not being in the woods and could not complain a bit. The night sky, and views all around were so relaxing. Not sure is if was just the weekend weather, but be prepared to stake everything down. Very windy!!! Easy to find, and will absolutely be returning.
