The homestead was built in 1911 and was one of the original postal pickups in the area.  The ranch is located between Mesa Verde National Park, Hovenweep National Monument and backs up to Canyon of the Ancients National Monument. Our family has lived in McElmo Canyon for over 40 years and the campground has hosted camping and outdoor educational groups since 1965. We are a family run ranch with an operating hay farm, horseback riding business, and carriage shop.

Site 3 - Canyon Trails Ranch RV no Stall
So much thought, and love went into the design of this awesome place! The views of Sleeping Ute Mountain are superb! The amenities are great, a bit of a walk to the bath house but can enjoy the night sky on the way. We especially loved the chuck wagon dining area, with fire pits, propane grill, and nostalgic throwback to an earlier era. Super nice hosts - the antithesis to KOA franchise experience. You won’t be disappointed!

The Rancher Wagon
Wonderful winter stay! Amazing surroundings, was only one there when my dog and I stayed. The wood burning stove was warm and the space was very well put together. Lots of great potential for group trip with friends / family.

Canyon Trails Ranch ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This site is .25 miles from the Sand Canyon Trailhead at Canyon of the Ancients, and sits at the base of Sleeping Ute Mountain. Because of the cold weather we were dry camping, and didn’t have access to water at the site because of freezing temps, but still had electric hookups for our camper. The views at Rodney’s property are stunning, and he very graciously gave us a tour of his ranch and shop which are located just down the road from the campsite. He also recommended lunch at the Lounging Lizard in Cortez, which we hit on our way to the Canyons of the Ancient’s Visitor Center and Museum after hiking in the Monument the previous day, and the food there was excellent! This is a beautiful place to camp, with unparalleled access to hiking in the Monument….would definitely camp here again!

Conestoga Wagon
What an incredible experience this hipcamp was! Jenny and family offered so much more than was offered on hipcamp, and we were just so impressed! We rode horses to ancient kivas and was able to see and experience something that not many people get to do. Would 100% book again

So awesome!!!
This place rocks!!! Booked spur of the moment as the Hovenweep, UT campground was full (Eclipse traffic). The hosts are very kind and generous. Our site was perfect for our truck bed camper. Hosts put on a special eclipse chuckwagon breakfast, led us to a special viewing area with their family. Saw the eclipse perfectly. There’s more!! The communal fire pit was a blast that evening with a special singer songwriter with other campers and hosts. Was so much fun. Next visit we will try to go on a host led horseback ride.
