Pitch your own tent, or park your vehicle on "the shelf," just below the main hilltop camp area with kitchen, toilet, and amenities. Because this is a bit further away and a short 1 minute walk to the camp kitchen area, the price is lower than the "Hilltop Campsite." There is a level, shaded spot for a tent and parking; larger RVs or campers may need leveling jacks.

Pitch your own tent, or park your vehicle on "the shelf," just below the main hilltop camp area with kitchen, toilet, and amenities. Because this is a bit further away and a short 1 minute walk to the camp kitchen area, the price is lower than the "Hilltop Campsite." There is a level, shaded spot for a tent and parking; larger RVs or campers may need leveling jacks.

...A very short walk away: The camp kitchen area includes access to everything the Hilltop Campsite gets: outdoor shower and tub (propane heated), sink, and outdoor kitchen setup with gas grill. Comfortable camp area with treehouse hammock! Compost toilet is a short walk away - be sure to cover with ample mulch/leaves! Lots of hiking trails in deep wilderness (with warnings to be aware of snakes and poison oak). Beautiful remote location on 34 acres of our land just minutes outside of Calistoga, over the Sonoma County line. Great dining in town 10 minutes away, or stay in and cook at the camp.

*See Green Welcome Binder at checkin for MORE INFO. Added tips/guidelines:

*Bring your own roll of toilet paper to be safe; can be wet in morning or there may be other campers. There will only ever be the possibility that you share the hilltop with one other camping party.

*There is a slim chance we'll book both campsites, and you will share the amenities with one other camping party, max. The other site is on "the hilltop" or the "Safari Tent" right next to the camp, and only one of those can be booked at one time.

*We have two old dogs! They are friendly, but our old Husky mix will bark at first - she's just testing you out! If we're not home, there should be treats to feed them and quiet them down. If you bring pets, please just introduce them slowly at first, but then they should get along famously if your dog is friendly.

*Please be extra respectful of the privacy of our neighbors down the hill.

*The camp shares the hilltop with our main residence, separated by the shed, driveway, and shadecloth. You may hear/see us come and go, but we are a quiet family - right now just myself (teacher), wife Mariah part-time (artist), and mom Jan (retired teacher) who we are caretaking.

If you’re wine tasting in Calistoga and don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars for a hotel room. Stay at Dan‘s place for a night. The toilet is a little special but with outstanding views 😁. Very quiet spot with only two camping parties allowed.

The Whaleback Ranch camp experience was awesome! Host instructions were clearly explained in a binder on site and also explained with host greeting me on arrival. Other guests were super cool and friendly. My dog and I enjoyed a restful, fun, scenic and economical stay in our exploration of Calistoga and nearby Santa Rosa and St. Helena.
