Stay in our safari tent cabin, complete with small private deck, futon bed (and extra mattress for kids or extra guests)...then get the full Whaleback Ranch "Glamp" experience: outdoor shower and tub (propane heated), sink, and outdoor kitchen setup with gas grill. Comfortable camp area with treehouse hammock! Compost toilet, cover with ample mulch/leaves! Lots of hiking trails in deep wilderness (with warnings to be aware of snakes and poison oak). Beautiful remote location on 34 acres of our land just minutes outside of Calistoga, over the Sonoma County line. Great dining in town 10 minutes away, or stay in and cook at the camp.
Added tips/guidelines:
*Bring your own bedding or sleeping bags and pillows. Tent is stocked with 2 large blankets and pillows (as backup, without cases). Freshly cleaned sheets and pillow cases available as an "extra" for $20 when you complete your booking.
*Bring your own roll of toilet paper to be safe; can be wet in morning or there may be other campers. There will only ever be the possibility that you share the hilltop with one other camping party pitching their own tent or small trailer (no generator).
*There is a slim chance we'll book both campsites, and you will share the amenities with one other camping party, max. The other site is on "the shelf," or further away if they choose, and not on top of the hill. The only sites on top of the hill are the "Hilltop Campsite", which runs $65 per night, or this listing, but we no longer allow the hilltop sites to be booked at the same time, to increase privacy for each party.
*We have two old dogs! They are friendly, but our old Husky mix will bark at first - she's just testing you out! If we're not home, there should be treats to feed them and quiet them down. If you bring pets, please just introduce them slowly at first, but then they should get along famously if your dog is friendly.
*Please be extra respectful of the privacy of our neighbors down the hill.
*The camp shares the hilltop with our main residence, separated by the shed, driveway, and shadecloth. You may hear/see us come and go, but we are a quiet family - right now just myself (teacher), wife Mariah part-time (artist), and mom Jan (retired teacher) who we are caretaking.

Had a really nice time staying here. The terrain was beautiful and the glamping tent was really cool and comfortable. Dan was very responsive even though he was on his honeymoon!
All of your glamping dreams come true at Dan's place. The tent was spacious, the bed was comfy, the view was incredible.

Thank you Angie! I'm so glad you had a good time, and you're welcome back anytime. Take good care, Dan and Mariah
Everything was as promised except that I was under the impression that the camp site was more private and isolated. But it's actually right next to the main house with people, dogs, and cars coming and going. So it, unfortunately, was not the private retreat I was hoping for.

Hi Adam, I'm sorry you had the wrong impression! I'll add a note to the main description based on your review. With the new 8x 12' shade cloth and the shed separating the house and camp, we barely noticed you were there and plan to keep it that way for future guests. Thank you for your review.
First of all, Dan was super warm and helpful via text before we even arrived. He had restaurant recommendations and made sure we knew to pack for cold nights in the tent.
We found the tent and pads super comfortable and plenty spacious for our family of 4. We brought our own sleeping bags and pillows but lay down some of the provided blankets to make extra cushiness for the pads on the floor.
We met our hosts and their dogs in person the morning after our first night. The dogs are old and extremely sweet and gentle. Dan and his new wife are so friendly and so sweet with children. We were interested in a place for the kids to swim, so Dan and Mariah led us on a ten minute walk down to a big pond that was perfect! Sure there was some mud and the water was a little cloudy this time, but there were dragonflies, water skeeters, tiny fish, and occasional bullfrog sounds. We enjoyed sitting in the mint-covered banks watching the kids and dogs play in the water.
There's also a smaller pond near the campsite where we found time of tiny frogs and tadpoles.
Back at the campsite there's a swing and a tall tree house with a hammock in it. The outdoor kitchen has a grill and several sinks. It is stocked with a sponge, dish soap, Dr. Bronner's, and dishes and cutlery for four.
The ground near the campsite is rocky and often uneven. This would be a great site for families with kids either pre-walking or ages 3/4+.

Thank you, Marissa, we had so much fun hosting you! Based on your private note, I've added a large shade screen to give the tub ultimate privacy, added a strap for extra treehouse protection, and some other things to make the camp more efficient. Thank you again for staying with us!
I had a wonderful time staying in the tent at whaleback ranch! The tent is spacious and a comfy refuge when it’s windy. The views are beautiful, being able to have a hot bath with a view of trees and mountains was such a treat!

My 15-year-old black Lab Henry and I had a fabulous time glamping at Whaleback Ranch Camp and Tub! It's the perfect escape from the city for the adventurous. The tent is cozy and spotless, and the bed is built for deep sleep. We spent the day kicking back and strumming a ukulele (more so me than Henry on the uke) and soaking up the views. Speaking of soaking, bathing in a tub in the open air was a new experience I hope to repeat. I'm through with indoor tubs. Best advice: Relax, take it easy — it's a lot of fun discovering all the camp has to offer. Dan is easy to reach and supremely helpful if there's anything you need.

Thank you, Erin, and thanks for your flexibility while we were away with just our caretaker here. I'm really glad you enjoyed everything. Please come back again in the future, to see our next Cabin setup further from the house!
