We had an excellent stay at Muirs Muse over Memorial Day weekend! The setting of the tiny house was very quaint. A large clearing surrounded by tall pine trees made for an ideal camp site. We really enjoyed cooking out on the picnic bench and sitting around the campfire at night with the stars overhead. The tiny house was also a nice change from tent camping. The owner added some nice decor to give it a little country flair. Don't expect a magazine perfect cottage though, the structure had its rough edges, but we weren't there to spend all our time indoors. The porta-potty was also very clean.

We would highly suggest you take a hike on the pioneer trail that is near the property. We took the westward path (go left on the trail as you walk towards Hwy 20) and hiked for about 5 hours out and back. One of the better trails I've been on in Tahoe. We saw no other hikers and just a few bikers and two horses. It was an easy gentle rolling trail the whole way.

The only things I'd like to point out is to please be aware that the road off of Hwy 20 as well as the into the property is a dirt road. We made it fine with a Prius but if you have low sports car or it has been raining a lot and you don't have 4wd you could have issues.

We enjoyed our stay at Muirs Muse! Deanna was very helpful providing directions to the cabin, along with recommendations on local spots to visit. Please do follow her directions-- the driveway up to Muirs Muse looks a bit like a trailhead. We missed it a couple times. (Make sure that if you use GPS, follow the address that Deanna provides. The Hipcamp coordinates will take you a much longer way.) Going up the driveway, you may also have problems if your car is low; lots of medium/large rocks in some places.

The cabin has a futon on the first floor and more futon cushions on the 2nd floor loft. You'll need to bring pillows and sleeping bags/blankets. I don't know if electricity is usually available (the cabin had electrical outlets that we didn't use), but Deanna has lamps in various sections of the cabin that provided enough warm lighting for us. Bring flashlights just in case! You'll also need to bring water, as there is no running water available. A clean port-o-potty is situated right outside the cabin. It was well-stocked with toilet paper and hand sanitizer. We enjoyed cooking food over the fire pit. Bring mosquito repellant; these suckers come out THICK around dusk and dawn. Deanna also has a small, but interesting, selection of books that you can read during downtime.

Overall, we loved our stay and would come back. The cabin is remote but close enough for cell phone reception (if you need it), and not far from Hwy 20. We had the cabin area to ourselves, no human beings in sight. It was hard finding the trail that Deanna mentioned, but if you need info, Deanna responds very quickly. We didn't get to meet her in person; however, she emailed and checked in to make sure we made it OK. She also left a nice Happy Birthday balloon and card for one of our friends who was celebrating a birthday that weekend! Wonderful hospitality!

If you get a chance, check out all the swimming holes/lakes along Bowman Lake Road. We made it all the way to Bowman Lake-- when Deanna mentioned it was an adventure, it definitely was! Make sure you have a truck/SUV. The pavement ends and there is nothing but gravel and large rocks! It was so peaceful out there but quite a ride.

Thank you for your hospitality, Deanna!

This secluded cabin is nestled in the middle of towering pines and cedar. Inside, there’s a futon where two people can sleep comfortably and a loft up top for an another two people to crash (bring sleeping pads). There isn’t electricity or running water, so make sure you pack headlamps and H2O. There’s a bright yellow Johnny-on-the-Spot right behind the cabin though.

The site gets a ton of sun. There’s a nice big deck that’s great for lounging on, plus a picnic table for preparing food. Make sure you get firewood while you’re still on the 80—there won’t be anywhere to buy it once you turn off.

Best part of this cabin is its proximity to the Pioneer Trail—it’s about 5 minutes away. We ran 10 miles without bumping into anyone!

Great spot to get away from it all, but with the comfort of a roof over your head. Couple steps above roughing it, but not quite glamping either. Deana was a great host and recommended many fun excursions around the area. We (fiance and two dogs) did a couple of nearby hikes and visited her recommended swimming holes... It was a great time! She even left doggie treat bags for our pups. I would def come again and maybe being a couple of friends to mountain bike the awsome single track on pioneer trail wich is about half a mile walk from the cabin. Thanks Deana!

Deana was an exceptional host! She took the time to write out very detailed recommendations for my girlfriend and I. YES, those recommendations were spot on! She had a small fire starter kit assembled by the fire pit, and the cabin was very clean.

Aside from the third day, we didn't see anyone else on or near the property. Definitely an ideal location for those seeking peace and quiet.

This spot is easily TWO thumbs up!

Muir's Muse was exactly what my girlfriend and I were looking for. Massive trees as far as you can see. Our two days were filled with hammock naps, hikes, and watching the trees kiss the clouds. What an experience! It was the perfect combination of glamping and shelter rental. We can't wait to go back!

Muirs Muse is a lovely little cabin in the woods. I stayed here on my own with my dog as company and felt safe even though I was alone. The cabin and grounds are very clean. It was super hot the weekend I stayed, and so I slept with the cabin door open. Remember to bring bug repellent! The cabin is easy to get to and fairly close to I-80 (so you do hear the freeway), but nonetheless it was peaceful. It was a great base camp for mountain biking, hiking and exploring the Sierras.

We didn't get to meet the owners (they weren't home), but they left us a doggie gift bag with dog biscuits and a tennis ball! Our dog enjoyed the treats and had a lot of fun playing with the ball. The space is beautiful, cozy, and clean. My family isn't exactly the outdoorsy type, so when I found Muirs Muse through Hipcamp I knew it would offer my family an experience somewhere between glamping and backcountry camping. I pitched my tent just outside the tiny green house for me to sleep in, while my family slept inside.

We had such an amazing time at Muirs Muse Retreat!
