Swing Under the Oaks is one of our favorite spots on the land. It is a raised area of an ancient river bed that looks out from a slight rise on the land in all four directions with beautiful views of the eastern sun/moonrise and amazing stargazing. And there is absolutely no light pollution.

Please note: This spot is completely exposed to sun and gets very hot (100 F) during the day in the summer (and there is an alternate spot that is more in the shade) and perfectly warm and toasty in the winter. It's the best spot for star gazing with zero light pollution (and we mean zero!). This site is about a 5 minute walk to the bathroom and parking. >This campsite is private with 1/4 mile river access, no nearby roads, completely dark night skies, and lots of hangout areas on and away from the river. The land has beautiful and diverse native flora and fauna including fox, mountain lion, coyote, hawks, owl, bobcat, deer and every reptile and bird species known to the area. Please at least learn one plant: the Tule Reed for which the river, the Native people, the county, the city, and my dog are named.Guided Activities

RECREATIONISTS PLEASE NOTE that we offer guided road bike and mountain bike excursions that can be catered to you! We can put you on world-class single track, technical and road bike trails!  Enjoy a 40 mile round-trip road bike ride at 7,200 feet along the majestic Western Divide Highway in the Giant Sequoia National Monument and literally see the top of the mountain. The ride will take you through high Sierra meadows, Giant sequoia groves, Quaking Aspen forests, iconic granite outcroppings, all under perfect blue skies with clean air to breath (Yeah, remember that?). We will transport your bikes from the Land to the start point on the Western Divide, and provide  healthy, simple snacks along the way, and transport back down to camp. Costs are on a sliding scale of $50/person.

II. Single track, technical mountain bike rides can be launched from Camp Nelson Trail in the GSNM (technical) or rides that launch right from the Land onto foothill trails that double as the route for the Fat Tire Classic occurring in October (moderate, technical). We will transport your bikes from the Land to the start point on the Western Divide, and provide  healthy, simple snacks along the way, and transport back down to camp. Costs are on a sliding scale of $50/person.

III. (Winter and Spring only) Also, we offer the ultimate RECREATION EXPERIENCE by guiding you, our guests, in meaningful habitat stewardship projects either on the Land near your campsite or within the nearby Giant Sequoia National Monument. All stewardship projects  are free of charge though we do invite you to become a member of WildPlaces, the non-profit arm of our Land that has been protecting and conserving wild places in the area for 20 years.

Mehmet & Chico & Bryan are very friendly, helpful, caring and intentional. Their home emulates the love they have for Nature and plants. They are amazing hosts that take care of the environment around them in a sustainable manner. It’s very close to the National forest, and they had great recommendations for when the park was closed. Taking a dip in the River during sunset cleansed our bodies mind and soul. They keep their place clean ( leave noooo MOOP!) and the toilets and shower all worked well. We shared food and conversation stories and songs, and we would stay here again in a heart beat!

We were recommended to go to Mountain Home State Forest, and it did not disappoint! Absolutely no crowds, and great short hikes around.Swinging Under the Oaks SiteWe were recommended to go to Mountain Home State Forest, and it did not disappoint! Very nice river and isolation but not sure who or why but someone stole some food from our cooler. Wasn’t too bothered by it but I guess be a bit careful.

Not a horrible spot but certain things should be known before booking. If you don’t mind these things, book away, but we minded. We had a site reserved for 8 of us but the way the land was with hills, grass, and large boulders, we couldn’t even fit 4 tents and while also having our kitchen camping stuff on the available flat areas.

Weird toilet set up-They asked that in the potty you wipe as needed but then put the crappy paper in a trash can and not in the porta potty. The can had a cover on it so it was not a very sanitary process. Disgusting. And I’m somebody who is a fan of composting toilets. This was not that.

Lastly, we had to carry all our camping gear pretty far to get it to our site. In 90 plus degree weather, carrying and not rolling gear (because of the rocks) was not ideal and when I book I try to avoid places like this, but I didn’t know. They did provide a wheelbarrow but it was even longer using it since you had to go a different way with no rocks. I thought I was going to be car camping but our car was actually a small walk away. I just wish I had known before booking.

Had a great time at this Hipcamp, we ended up camping only for a night but it was well worth it. Check-in was easy and Mehmet’s partner gave us a quick tour. We ended up getting a camp spot overlooking the river, very peaceful but did get a little chilly in the night. They have so many beautiful spots in this location, highly recommend checking them out. Don’t forget the outdoor open shower under the tree

Hard to put into words how beautiful Mehmet’s place is. The property is well kept, hot shower was luxurious! I could not believe the amount of wildflowers that were in bloom! Everyone was very kind and the campsite tranquil with the added bonus of having a built in camp table! We enjoyed every bit of our stay and are very thankful for such a gracious host.

The location is beautiful. The site was situated on a little rise, central on the property, between the two river access trails. There weren't many others around - very quiet. Mehmet has two large dogs who look intimidating, but are both real sweethearts. There is no light pollution at night - it is very dark - but all the better fir seeinv the stars. It was a perfect getaway. We did pay for a few extras, which didn't materialize, but not a bother enough to tarnish the experience.

We had an incredible time at this location (the actual title of their land is called Wild Places, which is a wonderful nonprofit to get young people out in nature and to learn about the land). Mehmet and Xico were wonderful, helpful, and generous hosts. We arrived late at night so Mehmet actually gave us a closer (and arguably somehow even more beautiful site above the river) which was very kind. Regardlesss, this Swinging Under the Oaks site is so gorgeous, you can’t go wrong with any of their sites. Definitely recommend staying here, you won’t regret it. One of my favorite places I’ve ever camped. Thank you, Mehmet and Xico!
