Such a great option for a quick impromptu overnight camping getaway! The spot was easy to find thanks to the simple yet thorough directions provided, the sites were well spaced out for privacy and had nice touches like a propane fire pit (so nice to have a safe fire despite there being high fire danger everywhere in CA... and your clothes don't smell like smoke three washes later), central loo, complimentary bug repellent (there were some black flies and wasps, but I've experienced much, much worse). Even the picnic table was painted! Didn't have the opportunity to meet the the hosts N&S, but they responded super promptly to texts and seemed super friendly. Would definitely stay again and for a longer period of time.
As advertised and then some
It was everything it was advertised as. it was PRIVATE without spillover noise from the other campsites. Definitely shaded and when the sun crossed over the sight you could just follow the shade a little bit up the trail and find cool comfort all day...very convenient. And yes it was a nice little walking trail. The hosts, while not there to personally welcome, left a welcome note with some extras you might be needing if you aren't completely prepared for the sun or bugs. It is quite a drive on some semi rough unpaved road but I've been on much worse. The sights were large with easy access for parking. If you have a trailer and don't mind the drive, these sites are all perfect for trailers. Plenty of turn-around room and room to move your vehicle to get the perfect angle. Sight #1 had the best view of the valley but all the sites were thoughtfully set-up for the guests. The sites were clearly marked to get you into the right spot without a bunch of guidance. They are working on the wasp/yellow jacket problem and actually, Uvas Canyon, the weekend before, was more of swarm fest than my Valley View campsite so it wasn't bad at all. Each site has a nice picnic table and a propane fire pit. My picnic table was painted very nicely and had a wonderful design that perfect for the campsite. Everything was very clean when I arrived and that can't be easy around all that dust. Oh yeah, there is dusty dirt but what do you think is on top of a mountain...and you are on the very top of the mountain. A clean porta potty is centrally located so you don't feel like your intruding on any other campsites. A truly beautiful spot and great for families or single camping. Highly recommend this one.
Wasp the matter?
Unbelievable views, great location, total privacy. Unfortunately, the thousands of yellow jacket wasps who reside on the property do not like to share any of the amenities.
Anytime while the sun is out the wasps are out too, and because there is a strict no fire rule here you cannot "smoke them out" (though we did see our neighbors try their best to do just that.)
This is a two night minimum campsite, but all of our guests (whom we paid for per person and per vehicle) left on the first day. We saw another group of campers leave a whole day early too.
We stayed, mainly because we an obligation in the area on Sunday, and there weren't any vacancies within our budget nearby. We did have to leave the campsite for the entirety of the day time, and only returned once the sun had gone down (the bees are inactive during the night.) Of course, Sunday we wised up and left before the sun rose, completely checked out by 7AM. Our kids and dogs hid in the car while we hurried to pack up our camp that we never even got to use (other than the bee shelter tent.)
There are probably ten wasp traps scattered throughout the property, that do little to combat this major issue. An exterminator might do the trick, but I imagine due to the location (near a state park) they might be limited on what they can actually do to fight them.
However, this doesn't excuse the lack of warning from the owners, as had we known we would not be able to access our campsite at all during the daytime, we would not have booked here.
All in all one dog and one kid were stung. Not at all what we were expecting, and honestly a major let down for our whole family, as we were really just trying to spend some time together after being separated for months due to covid. So what can I say? Book at your own risk, but BEE CAREFUL.
This campground is great. Clean and quiet, spectacular views, I love having the water spicket so close to the bench to was dishes. The flies, bees and mosquitoes were a bit relentless at times, but the bug spray did the job.
Great time at valley view!
We had a really great time at Valley View. Noah and Sarah were excellent hosts. The spot was super clean and well maintained. They had complimentary sunscreen and bug repellent for us and even a deck of cards! They had a table gas fire pit which was really nice since there’s a fire ban so only gas is allowed. We stayed at site 2 and the sites were well spaced apart and still felt private. We could fit our 25 ft travel trailer, two trucks and a tent comfortably with enough room to hang out around the fire. Since we had the trailer we didn’t need to use the restroom there but it’s my understanding it wasn’t the run of the mill porta-potty and was flushable much like an rv restroom. We walked a little down the road after the turquoise gate and saw a beautiful sunset. Would definitely stay here again. Notes for successful camping: definitely bring bug spray. There are lots of mosquitoes. There are also some annoying flies that were out during peak heat. We came up from the Mt Madonna side of Summit. The last part of the drive is on a dirt road and is pretty bumpy. Towing, it was helpful to have 4wd. there were some tight turns. I don’t think I’d bring a trailer much longer than our 25’ (about 29’ with the tongue). Also it’s about 3.8 miles after the pavement to the site itself. I was worried we passed the gate and we didn’t. We have Verizon and got service from site 2, thought it was intermittent on the way up.
