El Primo is the first of three properties I have in 29P. When it was just a blank canvas with a leaning wood cabin from the 50's to today,
Learn more about this land:
El Primo was born out of a desire to camp away from mainstream camping sites.
Today, it's slowly becoming a post-industrial-agriculture tiny, off-grid, farm. In the meantime, it's a Hipcamp that let's you camp inside of a small Quonset Hut, big enough for two adults to enjoy comfortably. There is also a semi-enclosed fenced area that offers privacy to dance the night away and wind blocking while enjoying the view, the outdoor fireplace. South of the property is an unobstructed view of Joshua Tree National Park and the treacherous foothills that wrap around it.
For the like-minded, there's a 300 watt solar powered lithium ion battery with enough power to inflate an air mattress, charge a phone or two, and power an LED light strip for the night. It can even power the string lights in the fenced area. You'll need to unfurl the solar panel (included) upon arrival to get some juice for the night. There is also a small rocket stove, stored in the Quonset, that you can use for cooking with but only do so outside and away from the Quonset. If you arrive right at check in and it's a sunny day, plug in the solar panel to the back of the charger and you'll have juice through the night to power a laptop while charging a phone and still power the included USB LED lights.
There's a picnic table with a wind-worn umbrella to enjoy your camp meals with friends, or a solid place to park yourself and your sketch pad or laptop, to dream big.
The tranquility of El Primo still brings me joy whenever I sit inside the Quonset and stare out toward the western snow-capped mountains. You'll also see such a density of stars and you'd swear you can see the gas clouds of the milky way. In the day, the sky is usually blue and always enormous. The moon at times will be so bright, you can read a book under it. The sunsets are stunning and the sunrises turn the foothills pink. If you're lucky (and into military aircraft), our largest neighbor, the Marine Corp. Air Ground Combat Center, will be running ops the night of your stay. No worries, the battlefield is beyond the mountains to the east. It's very hot at night in the summer months and in the winter months it will get cold. It will be very windy throughout the year (I've clocked 24 mph with the wind speed meter kept in the Quonset). Yet, with the right attitude, preparation and gear, it's awesome all year round. I hope you think so too.
This is also a great place to practice 'boketto' -- 360 degrees of pure vastness. Unplug and become unplugged.
The loo is a single wall outhouse (a single panel of corrugated steel fencing) and a bucket toilet. Toilet paper and bucket liners are inside the Quonset on the left side of the back wall.
One heavy duty garbage bag is inside the Quonset near the Rabbit art. Use one of those for your entire stay and take it with you. And pack your poo and take it with you, please.
Please respect my neighbors, the land & leave no trace. Have an awesome stay.
