We acquired the property in 2015, out-competing a logger who wanted to cut the grove for timber. We want the redwood grove to show the value of trees preserved in their natural state. You are helping us do that by staying in our woods!Halfway back in a 100-year-old grove of redwood trees stands the Redwood Cathedral Treehouse inside a “cathedral tree”– a circle of trees sprouted from an old-growth stump. Built using treehouse attachment bolts, this two-story platform is accessed via a redwood and madrone spiral staircase leading to the first deck. Constructed from salvaged, old-growth redwood from the local mill, it blends in perfectly with the surrounding forest. There you'll find a redwood slab table under a chandelier. A steel spiral staircase takes you to the upper deck, 22’ above the forest floor. Nestled among the branches, this large space features two cantilevered wings supported by cables. The first has a 12’ bar table atop decoratively etched tempered glass panels from which to overlook the grove, The other wing features an 8’ geodesic dome for reclining and relaxing. The dome has a storage compartment, two full-length pads and two opening windows. Bring your sleeping bags. You’ll find a swing for your inner child, a dumbwaiter for easy movement of belongings and a composting toilet and simple sink under the lower deck. The tree house provides space for two guests. For parties over 2 guests, an additional tent platform and picnic table can be added on for extra sleeping space. Because our neighbors have a rooster and other farm animals, you may hear crowing in the early hours. Inside the dome you will find disposable earplugs if this proves to be a problem for you. We are located on 1.25 acres approximately six miles north of Crescent City, California, halfway between Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, California—a comfortable day's drive (350 miles) from each city. We are three miles from the old growth redwoods at Jedidiah Smith State Park, part of the Redwoods National Park jointly managed by the state and federal governments. The tallest coastal redwoods in the world are within 10 miles of us. Two miles separate us from the ocean as the crow flies, about four miles by road. The nearest beach is Tolowa Dunes State Park where you are likely to see elk herds and porcupines. The beach is lightly used and on a weekday morning you can walk for miles north or south without seeing another person, though you are likely to see seals staring at you from the surf.

  • Review summary

    Generated from real Hipcamper reviews

The treehouse offers a unique and enchanting experience amidst beautiful redwood trees, creating a sanctuary-like feel for many guests. While the structure impresses with its thoughtful design and craftsmanship, some visitors noted noise from nearby animals and neighbors. A few reviews mentioned the importance of bringing extra lighting and bedding for comfort. Overall, the site is appreciated for its charm and proximity to nature, though potential visitors should be prepared for a more rustic stay.

The treehouse was magical! Secluded enough to feel like our own private forest property. The amenities were great considering how primitive it was. Be sure to bring extra lighting for the different levels. Def recommend this gem!

Despite the morning noise from the feathered neighbors, it was an incredible stay. Say yes to the dome!

    It was okay

This spot is truly unique and picturesque; however, it comes with a few things to keep in mind. When I stayed, the dome was really musty and could use some tender loving care. I ended up sleeping with a mask on because the mold was more than I could handle. I understand it's in a tree, and that comes with moisture...just keep that in mind if you are sensitive to mold. There was a lot of noise during the late afternoon. The neighbors were building a structure, so a lot of hammering and nail guns, and idling trucks just outside the property for quite some time. Barking dogs, goats, and roosters too! This spot is just feet away from the neighbors' property. I realize the host has no control over their noise, so it's not her fault at all! After sunset, things quieted down, and it was super peaceful. Also, the listing mentions that the water is potable. I'm glad I asked the host before drinking the water provided. She confirmed that it was not potable, but usually it is. So best to confirm before drinking. The composting toilet was clean and well cared for. Otherwise, this spot is really beautiful and not like most places.
