Welcome to El Escondite, your secret hideaway in the Kern River Valley, perfect for private enjoyment in nature: away from the crowds, but still close to everything!

Like the first Californians who camped here, you will pitch your tent at the back of the property, just above Tillie Creek. And be sure to visit our beautifully preserved metate, a large boulder that local tribes used to grind acorn flour. (The local people are known as the Tubatulabal, and they still live in the area.

Enjoy the solitude and birdsong, watch the sunset on Lake Isabella and Mt. Cook, and revel in natural surroundings with deer and other critters.

While El Escondite is a refuge from city life, it is also a perfect base to explore the Kern River Valley and Sequoia National Forest.

We are located on a private drive with a secluded acre of open land behind our home. You will be 4 miles from Kernville and just minutes to trails, boat launches, fishing, hot springs, and rafting on the Kern River, You will have access to a full bathroom in our home and a standard electrical hookup.

For a nominal rental fee, we also have two single kayaks and a truck to take you for a day on the Lake! Please let us know if you'd like to paddle.

El Escondite offers two additional accommodations directly behind our house:  the Casita, a 1-bedroom/bath with loft (booked through the summer) and a separate site for Van/RV use. All guests should be quiet and considerate neighbors.

Camping in Mary’s land was great, we even saw a deer! Mary is very welcoming, and a really good host over all. The bathroom is clean and available 24/7. We would camp here again definitely!

Mary is the sweetest host. I had the pleasure of sharing her beautiful home. Campsite is a very nice area with beautiful scenery. Nice little town nearby called Kernville. Mary is very welcoming and it felt like if I was staying at a family or friends house. We are definitely going back there we had a great time and she made it very easy for us to enjoy our time.
