Mother Lode Farm is a working organic farm. You enter the farm through a private locked gate (Hip Campers will be given the combo) and enter into a long meadow, bordered on one whole side by a rushing year round creek. The campsite is level, grassy, and partially shaded throughout the day by a huge heritage oak. There is a large rock on the creek by the campsite, with several Native American mortar cups where the original inhabitants ground acorns for meal. It is perfect for creekside lounging with a good book. We have also dammed up a small wading area, where campers can perch beach chairs, sit in the creek, and enjoy the cold waters during the heat of the summer. The creekside campsite also overlooks the gardens, where campers can help themselves to seasonal, organically grown produce, for a donation. Firewood is available for $15.00 a night. Please order a bundle for each night you plan on having a campfire. You can use what you like, but please keep your fires small due to fire danger.
Up the hill is the old farmhouse and looking down the meadow is an old barn and several campsites in development. We have a flock of chickens, fed on organic feed, whom produce lovely eggs, also available. The farm is the oldest homestead in Smartsville, which in its prime, was a booming gold rush town. The farmhouse is an old Victorian, circa 1850's, which is in the process of restoration and is rumored to have been at one time, the local brothel. If you like to swim, there are numerous swimming holes nearby.Collins Lake, Bridgeport, Edward's Crossing, Washington, CA, and Fairy Falls, all provide wonderful swimming holes. Access to the Yuba River is about two miles away, hiking trails abound, and the lovely towns of Grass Valley, Nevada City, and Penn Valley are all close by. Mountain bikers and hikers will enjoy the numerous area trails, and history buffs can explore Empire Mine State Park, Timbuctoo, and numerous other historical sites. Gold panning on the creek or the Yuba River is also something folks enjoy in the area. Lake Tahoe is a little over an hour away. This is a working farm, and the animals and farm staff wake up early. We try to be very respectful of those wishing to sleep-in, but Ozzy our very noisy rooster has no such regards. The creek is roaring, year-round as well. Our resident farm dog, Great Dane and Catahoula Leopard dog mix, is called Patch, and he has never met a soul who was not instantly his best friend. Sometimes, annoyingly so. Mountain Lions, Coyotes, Skunks, Deer, Bear, Rattlesnakes, etc. are also a reality in this area and regular seen. The creek is deep and therefore small children are not allowed.

Fun, relaxing and refreshing
Shady creek camping was amazing. We had such a fantastic time there. Where do I start ? Well, to begin with Sue is so welcoming , kind and generous. She made us feel right at home on her beautiful farm. We loved her dog , her chickens and her pig and we really loved the campsite. There is a peaceful and beautifully sounding creek running through camp that is so refreshing to dip off in and a hammock to relax in. There was also a big fire pit with 4 comfortable chairs that we enjoyed every night. It was fun to be in the country yet only 20 minutes from grass valley where we went to the co-op to shop and Yuba river to swim in. Shady creek camping is in a great location. We look forward to camping there again 😊
Cozy creekside camping
Great little get away camping spot. The site was roomy, shady, and very peaceful. River access close by and lots of places to explore. We really enjoyed our stay. The host was very helpful and the site is a gem.
Wonderful place! We loved the setting and environment, and Sue is a generous and kind host.! Took my family and we had an amazing time. We are already planning to come back again Thank you so much Sue!
My group of friends and I had a wonderful time staying at Sue’s campsite on The Motherlode Farm. All the amenities were included and the creek that runs through the property provided some a much needed cool down space over the warm weekend. Sue was an awesome host and even left us with some parting gifts from the garden when we were leaving. I would definitely visit again!
A magical place
What a beautiful place! A true gem. Sue was a delightful and fantastic host. We loved playing in the water and staring up at stars at night. A wonderful camping spot with a fire pit, picnic table and a very clean porta potty. Oh! and a dreamy little swimming hole amongst the trees, moss, and berry bramble.Thank you Sue, for sharing your magical place with us. I look forward to staying again.
It wasn’t what I was expecting only one camp site. When I looked at the website it was a bit deceiving I thought that there was water to hang in but it was a small little creek. The little pool w the hammock across belongs to her neighbor and you can’t use it or the little pool. I think the most important thing was that Sue made up for it al very genuinely nice and very helpful everything was clean including the port a potty I was expecting something and found something wonderful 😊 I had a wonderful stay I will go back I highly recommend 👍
We really enjoyed our campsite on Motherlode Farm. The site is right under a majestic oak tree next to a little creek, both kept us relatively cool in the sweltering July heat. The campsite has a fire pit with Adirondack chairs as well as a pick-nick table, all set up with table cloth and flowers! Clamping at its finest!
