Abuelo Camp is a small, secluded campsite a half mile hike up from the main lot, near the Reservoir along a footpath. Campers love this site because of its proximity to the Reservoir, and it is perfect for smaller camping groups (ideally for 3-4 tents maximum).

The site is located under a huge oak tree covered in Usnea hirta (also known as OId Man's Beard or Spanish Moss), a stringy type of lichen. We named this site Abuelo (which is Spanish for grandfather) after the two names for the plant. It features a picnic table and flat, grassy ground to pitch your tent on. We do recommend bringing your own shade, because the tree alone may not be enough. Park in the Reservoir Parking Lot near Campers Orchard and plan to walk gear up to this campsite. Because the trail to Abuelo and the reservoir is up a dirt path which may include stairs, we do not recommend use of hand carts for hauling gear. Remember to pack light! Currently reservation requests for this campsite are set for 5 campers. When booking the site for more than 5 guests please edit your request to reflect accurate headcount information in advance of your arrival. Additional campers are $30 per adult nightly. Currently we can only allow up to 12 campers per one site.

SMOKE ONLY IN DESIGNATED AREAS

$5 for every cigarette butt picked up after private events & campouts

There will be no personal campfires allowed at Mendocino Magic for the 2021 season. Campers wishing to have a campfire are invited to join us at the communal propane fire disk (by the Central Camper's Kitchen) where it is safest. We do allow personal propane stoves for cooking (not propane firepits), which we have available to rent at the Front Porch. We hate having to take campfires out of the camping experience, but fire season is a scary time of year for everyone, and we all must do our part to ensure the safety of our community. During a fire ban, please do not start a fire at any camp's fire ring - guests who do so will be asked to leave without a refund.

This place was great! We are already planning our return. Perfect spot for a group trip. Mackenzie (host) & staff are available for anything you may need.

About the spot: We brought a canopy which is absolutely needed during the day for this spot as there’s no shade. By the late summer afternoon, the Oak tree provides lots of shade so our tents were nice and cool by night time. One minute walk to the reservoir for swimming and a porta potty. It was perfectly secluded for our group bc our dogs can be a bit barky around other people and dogs. Next time we want to bring floaties and a standup paddle board bc the reservoir is perfect for that! Last but not least, the star-gazing in this spot was AMAZING since it’s not by any other campsites or central area.

This place is just great. The lake really is special and is an easy walk from all campsites. Water temp and water level was awesome (July 2021) and with only paddle craft, it’s peaceful and serene. Our campsite was clean and nice. Would return for sure!

Had the best time over 4th of July weekend. We stayed at Abuelo Camp which was close walking distance to the lake. Mackenzie met us upon arrival - really cool chick, super down to earth and friendly. Abuelo camp was perfect for stargazing and big enough to accommodate 3-4 tents. Not much shade, but we brought a pop up canopy which helped out tremendously. We spent the hot part of the days at the lake kayaking and fishing.

You’ll like Abuelo camp if you want a little more privacy as it’s away from the other campsites. When you’re feeling social you can go down the footpath to the main kitchen and fire area to hang out.

We will absolutely be back!

Popular funky big camp with lots going for it. Staff is sociable and helpful. Lake is a refreshing option on a hot day.
On Saturday night of the holiday weekend, some music and fun was available. So your group can enjoy camping banter.
If it’s solitude or silence you seek, you might continue your search.
For fun with friends, you may have found the right spot.

The campsite is a short walk to the lake — which was a deal breaker — as well as a porter potty. There's canoes and paddles available at the lake, first come first serve. The campsite has a picnic bench and enough space for 4-5 tents. There's not a lot of shade at the site so I recommend bringing a shade structure. The site is uphill from the parking lot. There's wagons available for guests to lug gear to the site, which is about a 5-10 min walk on a dirt road.

The overall campsite has a communal fireplace, as well as grills and a seating area. Also, the porter potties and showers were well kept.

This is a great location for quarantine. Enough space to socially distance from other campsites, including the communal spaces. Would go back again!

Abuelo camp is awesome. It's a spacious secluded spot on the way up to the water which is where we spent most of our time. If you're looking for a hike-in spot with great amenities around the property at your disposal, stay here! This spot does get a lot of sun, so come prepared.
