Not a campground for all...
Upon arrival there is no guidance as to where to go to register, when I did find the office (thanks to a random guest). I entered into a small dark quiet zen like shop that was filled with books, healthy interesting packaged goods and music. It was very quiet at the grounds and all sites were open I was just told go park by the pond (due to no rainfall it’s more like a swamp) and was told there’s no campfires at individual sites (even tho the the website states campfires allowed) but there is a common area and one campfire where a group formed at night - just thankful I had propane and was able to cook. I have never been to a campground where they DID NOT ALLOW ALCOHOL & MEAT & as per other reviews I feel this should be labeled more prominently on their website.
I used the restroom facilities around 7pm and was surprised at how dirty they were with full garbage containers and almost no traffic at the campsite? I did see day trippers (lots of children) and thought maybe there were more people than I saw or this was just messy for a longer period of time. I was excited to see showers and upon further inspection I saw they were full of paper towels and used items still in the stalls - I left feeling disappointed- it's just a simple fix. The fire later in the evening was nice, quiet conversation, music and guests sharing experiences (no one had masks on). Overall this isn’t a campground for all but do feel it would fulfill a particular lifestyle group well.
Would stay with a few warnings ⚠️
Prior to booking here we looked at several campsites that were booked, so we were surprised there was space. It wasn't until after we confirmed our reservations that we noticed this was a no drinks, no meat, no eggs, strictly vegetarian property.
I was taken aback, and wanted to cancel but I figured it was one night and we could do without grilling, or cracking open a beer. The property was clean, quaint but too close to the main road so we still heard traffic late into the night. This was also a family campground, which isn't an issue if kids aren't loud😳 but we all know that's not a reality. It was fine, until the shrieking starts...
Ultimately, I would recommend it but would also let people know of the specifics that I really had no clue any campsite would put on their guests.
What a magical long weekend. We were a little hesitant with no meat and no alcohol but it made for a wonderful, welcoming environment where we immediately made friends. The place is still under development but has more than you could ask for from a campground. The communal fire pits were such a great way to stimulate meaningful conversations. The pool was a center of activity during the nearly 100° days. The kids had a ball on the playground. The parents were so grateful for nice bathrooms and showers. We loved it and will be back.
Great group space
Super cool hidden gem! This place is great for a large group or to go with friends. A few of my favorite assets were the pool, the nearby hiking trails, and the group fire pit at night! I would love to go back in the Fall!
A beautiful, peaceful retreat
A great time at Mandala Springs for the long weekend. A really beautiful property with lots to do, and enough space for the tweens in our group to wander. Though it was quite hot, we were very comfortable by the pool or creek. For camping, there are no formal spots, and they told us we could set up anywhere on the property. The bathrooms are nice and clean, though they mostly did not have handsoap during our visit (come on, we are still in a global pandemic!) and were out of toilet paper once. The office is mostly unstaffed- this wasn’t a problem for us, but it does seem like there are limited people working here. It was fine for us. The property is beautiful and clean, and we had everything we needed. Will definitely return (with my own handsoap!).
It is a good camping site for novice campers or families with young kids, in and around Bay Area, who are looking for convenience in terms of location and facilities. Location-wise, it is quite easily accessible from Bay Area, just a couple of hours drive from San Francisco. Campground offers great family and kid friendly facilities - kids playground, swimming pool, well maintained toilet and showers (hot), nice small stream flowing etc.
However, the one thing that the hosts can improve is with the tent sites. Tent sites needs to be well marked. Although the area itself is quite big, there are only a handful of sites which are ideal for tent camping. Except for a dozen or so spots along the stream, there is hardly any shaded or a well groomed space, which makes it extremely hard for people camping in tent. Some campers with RV were also struggling with the heat because of lack of shade. My suggestion to the hosts is to mark the tent sites clearly and only book reservation for those spots.
