Not quite ready for camping
I didn’t stay. Felt like I was in a construction zone. Barren, hot, dirty. Tent not set up correctly, every thing uneven. Not private as there is a permanent trailer set up there, expected someone to show up any time. With some more effort it could be nice but not right now.
Bad experience with laurance
Property was unusable for my group, we had 5 vehicles, pickups with trailers and RVs. I had told Laurance this in advance. The property is sloped and rocky. There was no room for all of us. Most people don't think a slope covered with softball sized rocks acceptable as a campsite. There is a small "driveway" which might accommodate 2 vehicles in a pinch, and there was a tent as advertised.
I informed Laurance of our experience, suggested that he change his site description, and possibly return my payment. I notice that he did change his site description from 21 people to 3, and his cost from $70 to $50. He did not refund my payment, although his site description was obviously wrong. An honorable person would have refunded the payment.
Easy, private space to camp.
We had a nice stay at the bell tent. Laurence provides the cleanest, most immaculate porta-potty at this space as well. The walk down to the river is easy but unfortunately the water is very low & filled with algae. There is no swimming or even dipping your feet here. Still we had a lovely time walking amongst the river bed rocks. At night there is a lot of highway noise & barking dogs nearby but we put in our earplugs and it was fine. Having the bell tent makes it so easy to set up camp inside without having to pitch a tent. This place is a easy to find and a nice slice privacy not too far off of Hwy 101.
Not what i expected
I expected the setting to be much nicer from the description. This place is a large lot in the process of being developed. Felled trees and tree stumps abound. Large mirrors are propped against a freight container give it a spooky vibe at night.
Also, whoever stayed there last left several small items in the tent. From my communications with the owner, I thought they put the tent up for us, and so everything would have been cleared out.
Private and rustic
Great, very private spot right on the river! There’s a cool bell tent set up, plus plenty of room for our 14’ trailer. Lots of shade. Our dog was super happy with all the sticks! Thanks for sharing your place with us!
So sad we couldn't visit!
The travel gods were not kind to me while on a camping trip with my daughter, causing us to miss the night @ Laurance's property. His truly looked the most promising out of the several places we'd reserved throughout our week of touring Nor Cal & So Oregon. He seems to understand the HipCamp concept better than many and was super responsive as questions arose prior to our trip. He's on my short list of places to visit when I visit my daughter in the Fall.
True humboldt experience.
With the Redwoods as neighbors and the Van Duzen River in your backyard (front yard?) it's hard to beat this spot.
The large wooden fence around the property makes it feel super private and secluded, and the large yurt the host set up for us was a perfect living room.
Tell ya', walking down to your private part of the river at sunset after a long day in Redwoods...it's real hard to beat.
Also, the host is way chill and we had him meet us out at camp with some recommendations on where to swim and whatnot.
A great place to unplug and breath.
