In the center of the California coast

Where the mountains meet the sea

A place beside the creek

And near the ocean

In January of the year 2021 an atmospheric river descended upon the canyon in which we lie at the bottom of. The heavy rains and winds brought down trees that were burnt from a large fire in the fall. The logs damned and burst causing a flood of epic proportions, scouring the earth, moving boulders as big as a house and taking out trees as big as a bus. Our home and many facilities were destroyed as the banks breached as high as 30 feet from the river bed. We are currently in the process of re-establishing the basics. Some things were spared and we still have the ability to host some guests. The land has been dramatically changed but is just as beautiful as it has always been.

A Home with Family, Friends, and Animals. Striving to create a minimal impact, with a respect and awareness of this wild and natural part of the central California coast. Practicing simple eco-sustainable and environmentally friendly living techniques.

An escape from the electrical grid. There is no internet, electricity or phone service. There is minimal solar lighting, fire and propane stoves and water heaters.

The outdoor open kitchen was destroyed but we have set up a campstove and sink for guests or you can bring your own cooking gear. The organic vegetable garden was spared but the goats, chickens, ducks, and many fruit trees were washed away. We have since gotten some chickens, a rooster and some ducks.

Drinking water is available and is filtered from some taps.

Fires are permitted in only a couple areas.

Structures on the land are rustic, generally lightweight and built to blend in with the natural character of the land. There are outdoor composting poopers set up with sawdust and barrels.

Kids are welcome with an accompanying adult.

Dogs are welcome off leash, unless they attack chickens, goats, cats or other dogs. Please bring a shovel to bury dog poop.

This is a remote area with beautiful beaches, creeks and hiking trails throughout the forest. Some areas can be very dangerous with steep cliffs and loose rocks.  Be aware that things like spiders, snakes, raccoons, mice, poison oak, etc.. exist in natural areas like this.

Adventure along the creek, to the beach or up the mountains. Enjoy the scenic Pacific Coast highway. Retreat into nature by yourself or with friends and family. Practice art, music, photography, meditation.

No stereos or electronic music devices. Acoustic instruments are encouraged.

Carpool, parking can become tight. This is a busy, curvy, 2-lane mountain Hwy. If a car wants to pass, pull over.

Please do not bring excessive waste products into the forest, and pack it out. There is limited trash service, recyclables can be separated.

Alcohol is discouraged. It is not intended as a place to party or get drunk. A casual drink is okay.

All contributions are put back into the land, helping to facilitate the nurturing and sharing of this sacred space.

-IN ORDER TO BE ACCEPTED- please write  "My party and I have read and understand the description" and then tell a little bit about yourself/party, in your booking request.

We are currently not booking more than 14 days in advance. 2 nights on weekends have preference. Because there is no WiFi on the land - the internet may not be checked daily. Responses will come form Gene, Elle and sometimes Maggie-who does not live on the property.

Arrive before dark. Dogs may bark, but are friendly. You are welcome to check-in with hosts and get any assistance you may need, but they are not always available. Make sure you have the Written Directions printed or saved, as there is no reception on the coast.

Be prepared before leaving Monterey from the north and Morro Bay from the south with plenty of gas, a light, warm clothes, groceries, wood, ice, and anything else you may want or need from town.

In the wintertime, Dec-Feb, the days are shorter and it is wetter, windier and colder and there may  be unsafe road conditions. Check the status of Highway 1 before beginning your journey. As many structures are outside it is advisable to check the weather before booking.

The property was beautiful--from the creek and nearby shore to the hammock next to the cabana, staying here felt like a serene slice of heaven on earth. The sunsets alone made this a worthwhile stay.

A gorgeous piece of land right by the ocean, feels like paradise!

View of the ocean, a few minutes away walking. Maybe the best thing about this site was snuggling with this kitten who became our best friend immediately.

Beautiful and unique spot south of big sur. Hosts were helpful but also gave visitors lots of space and freedom which was nice to feel like we were disconnected from the world & other people. Beautiful creek and beach access

Such a lovely stay! Very peaceful and the walk down to the secluded beach was the cherry on top. Actually, the adorable kittens was the real cherry on top!

I saw all of the overwhelmingly positive reviews, but the reviews and pictures don’t do it justice! Such a gorgeous place with kind hosts, and it’s clear that the owners are creating an intentional community on their property. Wish we could have stayed longer and we can’t wait to come back! The cabana itself was so cozy - perfect for nature lovers. Honestly we were a tad apprehensive because my partner is afraid of bugs (lol) but it was so beautiful in person and we had a great nights sleep. The creek and ocean access was also a huge highlight. If you’re considering staying here - do it!

Gene's camp was a really fun adventure! The cabana with futon is an outdoor structure with a roof, be sure to bring warm blankets. There was a private composting toilet and a hammock perfect for star gazing. The camp has water and a small outdoor kitchen area but no showers. It's a short walk to a very secluded beach. We were able to watch the sunset on the beach each evening and even saw some whales jump out of the water!
It's about an hour south of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and an hour north of San Simeon. We were able to bop around the coast and have a nice place to lay our heads at the end of the day. Definitely recommend this listing but keep in mind it is not a glamping site. I had a really lovely time.

I don't want to say how great it was because I want to be able to go back and still have a chance to book it. The beach access alone...

This is a beautiful location and the hosts are kind, plus I really appreciated that it was available without a lot of advance notice. I enjoyed having the kitchen nook to cook in, potable water, and access to the beach and some time in the nearby river/stream. THANK YOU!
