Great camp! The entire property is artfully designed and appointed. Franklin fireplace and grill easy to use. A full camp kitchen! There’s even a marked path to a padded bench on a neighboring hill. Sweeping views and beautiful evenings. All near J Tree! What more can I say? Couldn’t have enjoyed it more. Thanks Rhonda.
Meandering through gypsy camp
Rhonda met my wife & I upon arrival to tour the camp site. She was friendly & informative. Everything was “as advertised” PLUS.
We has a wonderful relaxing time hiking & camping in a weekend with temps north of 100.
Close to entrance of J-Tree NP.
Thnx 4 sharing your Gypsy Camp Rhonda ..
A dream within a dream
Joshua Tree Gypsy Camp is exactly what a visit to the desert (or anywhere) should be: Experiencing a different way of life through the hospitality and creativity of a genuine local. Rhonda has lived on this patch of land for a good while (ask her), and over the years she's built this magical oasis rock by rock, tree by tree, path by path. Her love of the desert and all its myriad life forms is evident everywhere you look, from the sustainable permaculture installations to the names she's given to each individual rattlesnake. The fact that you're here on Hipcamp and not that other site means you can probably handle the heat and the dust and the wild elements that rule the day out here, but Rhonda has done everything possible to make your stay as easy and comfortable as possible. You can't sleep in the trailer due to zoning restrictions, but it will surely become your de facto hangout spot. She provides an amazing shade structure, a camp stove with propane tank, and a wide array of fixings, cookware, etc. During the more temperate months (i.e., not now), you might make use of the Franklin fireplace and the campsite itslef, but there's nothing like playing a board game or two under the fairy lights and listening to the coyotes chat away in the night. It's good sportsmanship to abide by Leave No Trace rules and to be as self-sufficient as possible, but in the event that you slip up and forget something, Rhonda probably has you covered. All of which says nothing about the beauty of the surrounding area itself. Gypsy Camp is truly off the beaten path, and Rhonda has provided a short hiking trail with a beautiful moonrise viewing spot to take in the vistas. Sunrise and sunset are both spectacular from anywhere on the property, and it's a sizable enough plot to feel as if you have the desert to yourself. Be aware that, while everything is fairly proximate to the parking area, there is a short haul to the campsite proper, so it might behoove you to pack on the lighter side or bring a few strong friends. And, of course, people who appreciate the natural quiet of the desert will have the most going for them out here, as voices (human and animal alike) carry far. If you like your desert pleasures to hearken back to an earlier (i.e., pre-Instagram) time, and you appreciate a lovingly appointed homestead rich with creative detail, Joshua Tree Gypsy Camp will be a dream within a dream.
Sustainable desert “glamping”
Perfect glamping setup far out in the desert with arid permaculture practices evident in most nooks and crannies. There is “love” in every corner. Rhonda has clearly worked on this property for years, and it shows! My daughter and I had a great time. Rhonda supplied the propane and everything we needed for cooking gourmet meals - pons, pans, wine glasses, camp stove, even a carrot peeler, strainer, olive oil and spices! You just bring the groceries, a tent and a sleeping bag. She even provides wood for the Ben Franklin oven, charcoal, lighter fluid, fire starters and a covered tablecloth picnic table, along with her very own local bunny rabbit and quirky desert art everywhere you look. The trailer has art supplied and a wonderful day bed if you need to get out of the wind or hot sun during the day.
Note: I was able to get there in my Tesla, but there is a two mile bumpy dirt road so SUV would be a better choice!
Magical place <3
Me and my two girlfriends had an incredible stay at gypsy camp! Rhonda is very very sweet and put a lot of love and care into her place. She greeted us and gave us a tour which was helpful. Lots of great amenities to make camping more comfortable, toilet, shower, sink and she has a stove to use, charcoal grill and the fire place is so nice. Literally everything you need! Thank you so much Rhonda!! We hope to be lucky enough to stay here for every J Tree trip we plan <3
Beautiful desert garden stay
Rhonda’s garden and trails made for the perfect campsite. We loved the views from her hill and the amazing fire/grilling set up. We were also well sheltered from the wind by her copse of trees.
Rhonda's Hipcamp is magical! The place is as described - and is extremely well kept, with wonderful amenities and thoughtful touches. We stayed for one night - and wished we had another one.
Rhonda's arranged her land so that you have access to multiple sitting / stargazing areas, cooking, dining, sleeping (where you can pitch your tent comfortably accommodates a 3P tent - but may be tight for a 4P).
The campfire / stove works very well - and keeps you warm without the smoke coming back at you because of the wind...
It's extremely quiet - coyotes howling at night, and birds chirping very early in the morning. Plenty of jays, quails, rabbits... saw a roadrunner too.
Note: driving to Rhonda's place takes about 20-30' to the eastern entrance of JTNP (and the last mile is a pretty choppy no-pavement road - but you'll be fine with a high-clearance vehicle).
Amazing campsite for two
Wonderful property to experience! Loved the tent site with the beautifully groomed fireplace, lounge chairs, grill and all the tools. The trails around the property filled with Gambel’s quails and doves, bunnies and chipmunks were nice, especially up the hill with the loveseat to hangout. We had windy weather and it was great to have the trailer to hang out and read, make coffee, make margaritas and cook. The grand finale with a fire burning, the less than full moon rising and an owl hooting nearby was awesome. Rhonda is an excellent host and caretaker of this oasis!
