Pitch your tent or pull up your RV or camper van on Death Valley's front porch just outside of Surprise Canyon in Panamint Valley. Near the ghost town of Ballarat, Death Valley Stargazing Camp is one of only four private parcels in all of Panamint Valley -- and lies just west of the Death Valley National Park boundary. This pristine valley is untouched, and offers panoramic views of amazing sunsets, sunrises, and of course dark, dark skies! The property features 4 campsites with privacy amongst the 80 acres. All sites have several hundred feet in between them, and include a picnic bench, fire ring, and shared porta-potties across from the Green Alien Mailbox (800 - 1200 feet away depending on your campsite -- or as we call them, Starsites). And did we mention the views?? Whether you're visiting Death Valley, or just passing through the desert -- these campsites are serene, scenic, and include a stargazing wonderland!
Site #1: Recessed from the road, this is the biggest site and has ample room for any type of vehicle, as well as lots of vehicles. Vehicles can pull through.
Site #2: Closer to the road and also fairly big. Some vehicles can pull through but some will have to back out. Large trailers could be a problem.
Site #3: Along side the road and the smallest of the three sites (although all sites are surrounded by nothing). All vehicles will have to back out of this site. Large trailers could be a problem.
SIte #4: Across from the mailbox on the west side of the road. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR LARGE TRAILERS OR ANY HEAVY VEHICLES WHICH COULD GET STUCK IN THE SAND! Cars should proceed with caution and stay on the road as there are areas of loose sand near this site. Walk to it first to check conditions if you are unsure.
Come join us in the middle of nowhere with dark skies and easy access to Death Valley, the Trona Pinnacles, Darwin Falls, Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, and countless canyons with mining ruins and adventures!

Magical Magical Magical
We arrived around 6:30 pm and the light was incredible. The sunset glow - stunning.
The stars and the Milky Way at 4 am, after the moon set were brilliant.
Some tips
Get water and wood in Panamint Springs which is just a bit out of the way. The store has everything and the staff are sooo friendly.
The road to the site is long so don’t be discouraged.
The alien is gone so look for the green mailbox
We couldn’t find site 4 but stayed in #1 and it was perfect.
This is a remote site so there is just silence and an occasional burro. The sense of peacefulness is astounding.
I was nervous for a moment about being so alone but the experience far outways the moment of discomfort.
Do not miss this opportunity of a lifetime.
There isn’t a five star hotel in the world that can give you this piece of joy.
The place is definitely named Death Valley for a reason. Close to the town of Bishop and surrounded by mountains.
The reason I wouldn’t recommend would be because there are so much BLM land that you could stay without having to pay for it. The roads are all unmarked so speeding is like normal for some people. I almost got ran over on the main road by a passing vehicle going about 50mph. The bugs comes out as soon as the sunset, not your normal bugs either, a sworm of flying fleas that made it spending time to look at the moon impossible. Our poor dogs were covered by these and we had to pick them off and spray them down. The bathrooms were full and they are about half a mile away which made it hard to get to at night.
Would I do this again? Anywhere but there., but it was an experience.
Mark was super nice giving us a stargazing tour with his telescope. Fantastic experience.
No cell service, so download the map ahead of time. Good directions with GPS coordinates sent by the host. Prepare for a long, bumpy gravel road to the site, but well worth it! Sites are nicely separated. We stayed two nights, first in site 1, second in site 3. Site 1 is furthest from the road, sites 2 & 3 are closer to the road, site 3 is the furthest from the porta-potty . All have nice stone fire pits and a picnic table. We have never experienced a place so quiet. The scenery is vast and beautiful and we enjoyed watching the wild Burro wander by. A wonderful chance to unplug, and an experience to remember.
It was AMAZING! The star gazing guide was so kind and knew the answer of all of our questions! Make sure to visit Ballarat Ghost town while you are near anyway. It’s only 3 miles away and also a fantastic visit

The tents were awesome! The location was easy to get to using some basic road skills. Just make sure you arrive before sun sets.
Beautiful, clean camp site. A wonderful experience with my 2 young kids.
Great place away from all civilization.
Most people stayed at the "Glamping pods" and that's where everything happened at night. I was at site #1. Huge but a little far from others, which can be a good thing if you want to be left alone.
The Stargazing was amazing.

The location is good for exploring Death Valley NP and the surrounding area. It was a quite place with ample spacing between sites. The fighter jets fly byes were awesome. The port-a-potty was in need of service and was not clean.
