Probably better options out there
I would not recommend going in the summer. The heat was way too hot to handle. The flies, bees and ants were really bad, so prepare for that appropriately. The water tub was basically a bath for bees. Views are great. Long drives to get to great hiking. Price could have been adjusted given the time of year and heat.
(Non-camp related) was not great seeing a Trump flag hanging on the pole as we entered. Made me regret booking this site.
Songdog Glampout is THE best spot to go if you are looking to see millions of stars and feel like you have the desert to yourself. Jim, owner of Songdog Ranch, is a truly amazing man and has great local wisdom/is amazing at suggesting things to do. We wandered around his property and hiked at Carrizo Plains - absolutely stunning views!! The campsite is situated near the top of the ridge line and is secluded and amazing. Can't wait to go back!
FYI - if you throw Jane (the farm dog) a stick or pinecone - she will be your new best buddy ;)
Had the best time at Songdog! Went with 4 other people and had no trouble fitting 5 in the yurt (there were 2 full sized sleeping pads provided and we brought one of our own). Bathroom is a short jaunt down the road with an epic view. We made friends with one of the dogs on the property (what a sweetie) and she was totally cool around our own dog. Will definitely be coming back! Great host and great spot!
We had a great time at the site. The night sky alone is worth it. My son quickly made friends with Jill and Jypsy (the two awesome ranch dogs) and Jim was super helpful with suggestions on what to do and where to explore that came in very handy for this trip and even for future trips. Definitely ask for the "tepid tub" - it's very humble and rustic but it will cool you down in the desert heat and make you feel like you're taking an authentic Old West bath!
The glamping spot was great. The site was in clean perfect condition, with all the materials for a fire laid out when I arrived. I stayed one night by myself with 2 dogs, was just passing through, but it was a really neat experience and would love to come back with friends. It feels remote, with beautiful views and the stargazing is amazing. The outhouse is a short walk away.
