The Camp is a convenient, 10-acre, private basecamp for visiting Joshua Tree National Park, only 17 miles away, and is also only 8 miles from the world-famous Pappy & Harriet's, the ultimate music venue, cowboy bar and BBQ restaurant. The Camp is surrounded by undeveloped private and BLM land, with unlimited mountain biking and hiking on the surrounding dirt roads, as well as cross-country hiking to the top of nearby Black Lava Butte (now part of the new Sand to Snow National Monument) or surrounding BLM land.
Under a large, metal sun shelter mounted on a concrete pad, the Campground has two large park-grade picnic tables, a dedicated, heat-proof stove table for propane camping stoves such as Colemans or the larger Camp Chefs (please bring your own propane), utility table, Santa-Maria style charcoal grill that also has a lid so you can smoke food (please bring your own charcoal), cowboy bar (you have to see it to believe it), and stainless storage cabinet for food. Many tent sites are graded and there is a large parking area on the other side of the camp through a second gate. There is also ample room to park small pop-up tent trailers or other trailers. In addition, there is a 5,000 gallon water tank, ADA-sized porta-potty that is serviced weekly, large propane fire pit and beautiful rock formations and native flora and fauna all around. A landing strip for model airplanes has even been graded in the back of the property! The overall all feel is your own private National Park in the desert.

Camp Nylen is a fantastic group campground. There are plenty of places to pitch tents, hide from the sun, and cook a meal. The kitchen area and ample seating make it easy to feed large groups. There are lots of fun rocks to climb on and areas to hang out around camp. Its a bit of a drive to get into the heart of Joshua Tree NP from camp, but its still worthwhile. There are plenty of interesting places to check out much closer to the site as well. The privacy, solitude, scenery, and amenities all makes this place a no brainer for your next desert group trip.
Camp Nylen is an exceptional place to go camping. It has a few amenities that we enjoyed. The covered picnic tables and cooking area is a major plus. Gregory provides a grill/smoker for cooking. Area to put food for cooking and a bar with utensils and cleaning apparatuses to cleanup after yourself. Potable water for a variety of things used around the campground. Two portal potty’s and additional 5000 gallon tank of water if needed. Enough space for 20 campers and 10 parking spaces. This is my second time here and I’ll be back again.
As a repeat visitor to this remote-feeling gem, I highly recommend this micro-Joshua Tree camp! Our kids love playing on the rocks, we love the view from the hilltop bench and the covered patio with tables and cooking area are top notch. Days are spent hiking to nearby rock formations, flying kites or just hanging out listening to the silence and enjoying the view. We spend nights around the large propane fire pit making s'mores and strumming campfire tunes. We always see jackrabbits and hear coyotes and it's nice that the famous Pappy and Harriet's is nearby to stop at on the way in or out. The hosts, Greg and MaryAnn are also great!
