Located amid western Sonoma County's rolling hills — just slightly inland from the coast — the off-the-beaten-track village of Valley Ford blends country hospitality with culinary and artistic sophistication. The surrounding land has long been home to farms and ranches, with sweeping vistas that include beautiful old barns and plenty of grazing cows. It is within 20 minutes from Dillon Beach, Tomales, Bodega Bay, Sebastopol and Petaluma. 40 minutes to the Russian River.
Our space is a 2,300 sq ft one-room schoolhouse built in the early 1900s. It has a rural and rustic charm with big windows, weathered hardwood floors, powerful furnace to keep the inside warm a cozy, a kitchen and bar, 2 restrooms with multiple stalls, and a large back lot overlooking the rolling hills and estuary of the Estero Americano. Open floor plan. Original wooden seating benches, folding wood and metal chairs, and collapsible 6 and 8 foot tables are included with the rental. No beds, showers or cots. Lots of folks enjoy projecting movies on the walls. You can use your imagination for sleeping arrangements. You also get use of the land behind the building if you prefer to sleep out doors.
While it has lots of space inside and out and located close to many outdoor excursions this property is less than an acre and has neighbors on two sides. One within 50 feet of the schoolhouse and one behind some trees a far distance from the schoolhouse. Still lots of privacy.
There's so much to do in this area, hike, horseback ride, dine, paddle, surf, eat, drink, and shop.

This was a great experience! We brought two 12 year olds who had a great time thinking up all kinds of games to play in the giant main room and the back yard. We live only 20 minutes away and visit the nearby beaches and towns often, but staying here still created such a unique experience for us. The schoolhouse itself has such a coastal, wind swept, fog soaked type of wear and tear to it, it's perfect. The furnace is huge and looks brand new, you can keep the place really cozy and comfortable all night no problem. All the great food in Valley Ford is about a 2 minute walk around the corner and the drive to the beach is beautiful from here. I could not recommend this place more highly for a really unique experience, especially with kids.
What a fun opportunity to stay in a historic schoolhouse. This was the ideal "Camping" for the winter months as we had a roof over our heads and a furnace to heat up the room. The schoolhouse is exactly as Brittany describes it - charming, but needs some love. Since we knew that going into this weekend adventure, all of our expectations were met. It's a great location for exploring Sonoma County and up the coast to Jenner, Fort Ross and beyond. Our kids loved having the open space of the school house to move about, color, work on puzzles, run cars on the hardwood floors and we enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere of camping with a few luxuries including a small kitchen. It's a lovely little get away if you are looking for a unique camping experience and ideal during Covid as we had the school house to ourselves and Brittany provided everything we needed without contact. We have already told many friends about the Schoolhouse and hope others can enjoy it as much as we did.
It was amazing! The large room was a great communal gathering space for us, and it was so warm and cozy inside. Don't expect luxury, there were several things not working. But who cares! It felt like a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stay in this historic, charming, and beautiful place. Highly recommend.

We got everything fixed. It's a work in progress for sure. Glad you were able to enjoy it still.
We had a great time at Brittany’s property! It’s a perfect in between for those who want to be a bit more outdoorsy but aren’t ready to camp in a a tent just yet. So much space outdoors to play and run around as well!
The only (small) letdown was that based off the last photo included in the Hipcamp listing - the aerial view shot - we thought it was going to be much more remote. However, there are neighbors very close on both sides. Not a huge deal, but just different than we expected!

I will update the information on the listing so that isn't a surprise. Thanks for letting me know.
The schoolhouse provided a warm cozy feel yet was larg enough for a group of 5 adults to spread out. The dogs loved the playing and sunbathing in the field out back. The town was a short walk away and very friendly. The beach is also just a quick drive. We will remember this place for future trips to the area.

The schoolhouse is a treat, and surrounding Sonoma County is beautiful and so fun to explore.
