Relax in your very own private retreat area and enjoy a freshly drawn pool of natural spring water all to yourself! Be as carefree as you want to be at this secluded site, or be adventurous and explore the many hiking trails on and off the property. Nature abounds here, as this unique site is situated amid a lush riparian area located in an ecotone of rare flora and fauna, creating a true oasis and mini paradise in the desert as well as a beautiful sanctuary for those wanting to relax and get back to nature. This special site is located on the Bowen Ranch property, which was one of the 1st ranches to settle in the area and is rich in local history, hence the name of the road that brings you here. Near the source of the Bowen Ranch spring, the original well site and pump stand are still in their original place as when it was used as the only vital water source by the Bowen's nearly a century ago. The pool incorporates the original reservoir utilized by the Bowen family for decades and a huge boulder centerpiece that has grinding slicks on its upper surfaces from hundreds of years of use by the local Native Americans. The pool can be kept filled with cool water for a refreshing dip during the hot summer months, or heated up for a relaxing hot spring experience anytime you request. A 2-3 hour notice is needed for heating the pool, with 1 heating per day included with site rental. Just steps away from the spring pool is a rustic stone cabin cave built into the natural rock of the cliff and hillside, which provides a shelter from the elements and boasts an awesome rooftop deck, which can be used for just about anything you can imagine such as your tent site, stargazing, dining, dancing, and more. The grotto like interior of the tiny cabin cave gives the feel of being underground, and with a small wood stove and just enough seating carved into the rocks to accommodate a small circle of friends inside, it makes the perfect place to tell campfire stories or have that secret meeting. All this and only a 40 minute hike from the famous Deep Creek hot springs and several awesome fishing holes along Deep Creek, which is a nationally designated natural scenic wild river that winds over 12 miles through the nearby canyon. This unique special place we are willing to share with you is a perfect site for family gatherings, celebrations among friends, or private events because we believe it provides an exclusive one of a kind almost magical experience that brims with positive energy overflowing from the spring source and is a beautiful place like no other.

Desert stars and hot springs
We had a great stay at this camp and I highly recommend. It’s a beautiful property with great energy.
Some expectations to correct before you go: the hot spring at the site is not natural nor naturally heated. They have to come down to the site to turn the heater on/off and it takes about 2 hours to heat up entirely. Plan accordingly and coordinate with the host.
The ~actual~ hot springs is a 2 mile hike. It’s steep coming out and not what I would consider an easy hike. (Our group was a fit bunch of 20 somethings who hike, backpack, climb, etc regularly) But totally worth it. Go early. It gets busy in the middle of the day on the weekends with tourists, kids, loud music, etc.
The cave at the site isn’t exactly a sauna quite yet. It’s cool, don’t get me wrong, but we didn’t really hang out in there. One person did sleep on a cot inside because it was significantly warmer.
They tried to upsell us to a glamping site multiple times. Granted, it was cold at night. But we knew what we were getting into and wanted to primitive camp at the site we had already paid for and not add another site for more money that was a significant walk away.
On cold nights I would definitely recommend renting a heater and a cot to use in the tent provided or your own. It’s the desert, it gets cold at night, but you’ll be perfectly fine with just the heater.
The hill getting in/out of the site isn’t bad if there hasn’t been snow or rain. 4WD definitely no problem, and AWD when conditions are good. They prefer you keep the cars mostly in the road area to protect the site or park up top in the parking area. You can probably only get 1-2 cars down into the actual site and the rest would have to park up top.
Overall, we had an awesome weekend and I would go back in a heartbeat. It’s beautiful, the springs are exceptional, and the people all very cool. You won’t regret the visit.
Great spot w/ pond to cool off in!
The site was perfect, it was exactly what we were looking for. It was secluded for our group with plenty of space. We had a big group with 3 children (4, 5, & 9). The cave and deck were added bonuses. The pond is extremely clean and provided the perfect spot to cool down after our mid-morning hike back from the hot springs. Along with the pond (which easily fit our group of 8 in it) there are a lot of shaded spots to escape the midday sun. Brent is doing more work to the site, so it’ll be even better, but it’s great as is right now. There’s a healthy sized hill to hike up for the compost bathroom, showers, and trailhead to the hot springs, but it’s also one of the reasons you are secluded down in the site. The dirt road to get to the campground is a little bumpy but nothing any car can’t handle. I’ve read horror stories about the former guy that ran the parking to the hot springs trailhead, but by all accounts it looks like Brent is doing great things to make this a good experience for all who visit. We have booked a couple different SoCal Hipcamp spots with our group, but this one was the best by far. We will definitely be returning!
Peaceful under the stars
Great place .. read directions to locate, gps is 90% accurate. Host and staff are friendly and helpful.
Great views, great hiking near as well. Over welcome the opportunity to visit without snow.
One of my new top hipcamps!
What a hidden gem! Brent is a great host and cares a lot about this land, and providing a good experience for everyone who visits. It’s really impressive what he’s built here, it’s still in the works and I can’t wait to come back and see the improvements he’s made.
*Getting to camp:* Is a 6 mile dirt road, so be aware that you’ll have to drive slow, it’s bumpy and will probably take you 4x longer to arrive than you planned. The GPS takes you right to the entrance of the camp. You may want 4wd to get down to this specific camp.
*About the site:* This site is so worth every penny. You have your own private hot spring pool, wood-burning sauna, campfire pit, it’s insane! It’s also a 2.5 mile hike to Deep Creek hot springs directly from this site which is a great way to explore the beautiful landscape and get some movement in. The nicest thing is that once you’re here you won’t want to drive or go anywhere else. If you plan to go to Deep Creek, bring a bag to pick up litter and leave it better.
I've been to a lot of Hipcamps and this is definitely one of my new favorites. I'm already looking at my calendar to see when I can come back and who I can bring with me. Thanks Brent, see you again soon!
Had a great time at the Bowen Springs Camp Retreat. The address and directions got us exactly where we were supposed to go easily and we were greeted happily by the staff. They did a great job at making sure we were taken care of and kept the hot pool hot for us during our stay. Thanks again!
Doesn’t get much better than this!
Maaan, talk about a campsite! Brent not only has the coolest campsite I’ve ever seen, but he was also the most welcoming host you could ask for. He remembered our names immediately, and checked in periodically to make sure we were having the best experience possible. Brent always had the hotspring pool ready at the perfect time, and the sauna cave nice and toasty for when we got done partying in the pool! He sincerely did not want us to worry about anything except having a good time. Brent provided an experience that neither myself, nor 15 of my wildest friends will ever forget! I HIGHLY recommend this spot if you are a large group that likes loud music, and struggle with the “quiet hours” and lack of privacy associated with public campgrounds. I will definitely be back!
This weekend was amazing!!! We picked this spot for the in-ground stone heated pool/"hot spring" in the campsite and the deep creek hot springs trailhead nearby (about a 1.75 miles hike from our site to the hot spring) and if you stay at this site its absolutely worth utilizing both because they're both amazing in different ways. The hike took us about an hour, and its quite steep at the end, so use your head when thinking about bringing kids, pets, not-so-good-hikers, etc. The hot springs are arranged in stepped pools, separated from the cold river by stone. Just look for where the nude college kids playing music are relaxing and those are the hotter areas.
Doing the long dusty hike down to the hot springs, sharing the space with so many other people, hiking the looong duuuustyyy way back, and getting to relax in our own completely private "hot spring" at night with our tent pitched 4 feet away was an incredible, unique and ultra relaxing way to end the night. Especially since this campsite is surrounded by hills, so at night its so quiet you can hear the air passing through birds' wings. The solar powered lights set up all around the camp at night were so awesome, especially with steam coming off of the heated pool!
There were more bowen ranch and unaffiliated campsites nearby, a lot of them more clustered together, but after walking past them on our hike I think we had the best one. Definitely the quietest and most private!
This spot is also incredible for seeing wildlife. I feel like we saw every mojave native species in 3 days! Jays, orioles, loons, ducks, hummingbirds, hawks, quail, kangaroo rats, ground squirrels, chipmunks, western fence lizards, garter snakes, butterflies, a big fat bumblebee every once in awhile. My favorite was that at night, small toads came out to hang in the campsite pool and chirped quietly through the night. So cute and calming. But somehow, not a single mosquito bite all weekend!
Our host Brent was so kind and helpful, both to us and just it seems as is his nature! He built all the cool stone structures in the campsite and its his sculptures hanging around the sauna area. He came by to adjust the heat of the pool as often as we needed and was just very considerate and communicative overall. It would have been easy for him to ignore it or just not care, but he wanted to move the toads that visit the pool at night when he turned the hot water on so they wouldn't get hurt, so we quickly moved them to another water source just 100 feet away. He was also attentive to us calling and asking for directions when we got lost hiking, even though he was also in the midst of helping a woman who was abandoned by her "friends" on a hike and stranded, and I don't think she was even a guest at any bowen ranch campsites! Awesome guy, great host.
We spent most of our free time hanging out on the patio on top of the sauna, under the campsite's umbrella. Perfect platform for lounging during the day, and stargazing at night with an underlit sculpture of Pachamama (Incan goddess of earth and time) watching over you! We visited during construction of another patio type space but it didn't detract much from the campsite, and we absolutely want to come back to see it finished.
Thank you Brent!

This place is awesome. The our site was very clean and private. Brent and staff were super accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed. Would def. return here for another stay.
