Hold your HORSES offers guests a complete horse immersed experience - The site is located in our large pasture where our friendly herd of horses some time comes to visit campers (If you don't see the horses, ask we can accommodate). They can typically be "shoed" away out of the site if you need a break, but truly enjoy camping with our guests.

The campsite can easily accommodate larger groups and up to 4 tents. Follow a walking path from any of the tents and it will lead you back to the common area which is home to a rock-lined fire pit and large picnic table.  Nestled in among our lower pasture, the views are of an oak savanna and rolling hills. This is the ideal pick for those who are seeking a little bit of shade, a whole lot of privacy, and walk-out / ride-out trail head access.

With direct access to hiking, biking, and horse friendly trails that lead to, and around Folsom Lake, we encourage guests to bring all their toys ... think about bringing light weight paddle boats, water floats, fishing gear, binoculars, hiking gear, mountain bikes, and of course your horses.

Ready to make this trip one to remember?  Consider booking a 2 hour trail ride - to the lake! Visit our AscensionRanch.org to add this activity to your stay, and learn more about the ranch.

*** We encourage guests to follow "Ascension Ranch" on Facebook or Google to see the latest happenings on the Ranch and see what's going on in-between your visits!

I bet this property is gorgeous in the spring and rainy season. I am hoping we came during an "off" time and had an "off" experience.
We visited during early September and it was 105 degrees and so dusty we could barely breath.
The description was different than we experienced. We found a site with a picnic table, fire pit and trash can. The port o potties were a good 15 minute walk. When we asked for soap to please be added they accommodated.
We specifically booked this site to be surrounded by the horses and other animals and we did not experience this.
Perhaps I misread the description, I understood the goats, sheep, horses and chickens to be free range. Everything was caged or fenced off.
When I mentioned this to the owner, he did offer to let the horses out but by the time he brought soap to the port o potties and offered to let the horses out, we decided to cancel the rest of our stay (we had booked two nights and left after just one).
We also found out there were rattle snakes where all our kids were playing on the kid zip line.
I was told by the owner that I didn't read the small print when I shared our concerns.

I DO believe this is a very well intentioned space and probably at a different time of year the landscape is different. The owner seems receptive to requests.

Just know you are literally getting a dirt spot (one of our friend's tent was a slope), a picnic table, a fire pit, and trash can.
There is ZERO water to wash dishes (perhaps by the port o potties?), the port o potties are a good 15 minute walk.
I would have liked to have this information very CLEAR to me before booking.

Overall, my group had a wonderful time and we would come back. The property is beautiful, restrooms are clean (though a walk from our site!) and the host was very accommodating and communication was on point. Plus, there were six of the cutest puppies to keep my group entertained. I fell in love the ‘’mom and dad’ dogs and they actually escorted me and my daughter back to our campsite from the bathroom in the middle of the night. How amazing is that???

However, I booked Hold Your Horses, because well, horses!!!!! I wanted the full horse experience of having them at our campsite for my daughter’s birthday. Unfortunately, that was not delivered and we were pretty disappointed. I did message our host and he was able to bring one horse to our site for the group to love on but that was just for a short time and the horse was on a rope, not roaming freely as described. The rest of the horses were corralled at another camp site so I guess we should of booked that one (though in that site’s description it does not mention horses so I didn’t even bother to look at that one).

When I booked this trip, I also booked a horseback ride for three people. Through the Hipcamp app there wasn’t an option to book the actual day/time of the ride and that got a little complicated and there was a lot of back and forth with the host about it. He was very accommodating and we did ultimately go on the ride but I truthfully wouldn’t do it again at this ranch. The leader of our ride had difficulty with his horse and the tack didn’t fit the horse properly, which didn’t help. My horse wouldn’t stay on the dirt/rock trail and wanted to walk in the grass. It became apparent that he was limping and his poor hooves hurt! I ride frequently at various stables and I’m familiar with the care of horses and this just made me feel terrible. I also noticed that the leader did not pack a first aid kit, water or even a hoof pick, which seems like something they should have with them when you go on an hour plus trail ride.

All that being said, I would still rate this place five stars because we had a wonderful time and the property is gorgeous and the puppies were so stinking cute!!!

Had a great trip. The hosts were very accommodating. The kids had a great time feeding the horses and playing with the puppies. Had a little mishap at the lake but the host were very willing to help and check in. Great place for families. Can’t wait to come back. Thank you guys!

It was definitely off the beaten path. Very private. We rented for two nights but only stayed for one - nothing wrong with the site, my kiddo just didn't feel well and I wanted to get her home. Horses were fun to have around in the morning though they dumped out all of the trash from our trash can. Wish we could have made it to the river. Clean porta potty.

Too hot and red dirt/dust got over everything. I bet this place is nice in the fall and spring. Lake was a half mile walk from access gate. Spent the majority of time at the river on 49.
Fire ban because of the drought. Animals stayed at the entrance. Would give it 2.5 out of 5. Would like to come back in the fall or spring but ranch hands were on a good one and inconsiderate.
Guest in my group was let through the gate and did not pay. The co owner came over and said someone would be by shortly to collect. I guess pulling up to camp after 11pm flashing high beams, honking the horn and yelling wake up was a better option than in the morning.
