The Willows -Tent/Burrito Camping
We are so excited to host you! This area has the unique designation of a community with privately owned property in the middle of the Anza Borrego State Park. Primarily due to rugged outdoor loving folks in the 1930's that would make the 6 hour journey by car from San Diego to spend time among the jackrabbits, kit foxes and burros!

About the property
Our property is not a commercial campground. You will be "glamping" at our home. The five acre parcels are "Jack Rabbit Homesteads" granted in 1938 that ensure privacy and back up to Cleveland National Forest. George Leetch of Canebrake said it best...the people who come here "find the peace and beauty of the desert vastness a healing seclusion and comforting relief from the frenzied outside world”. We work to cultivate an atmosphere of united fellowship and good-neighborliness prevails, but a respect for privacy is held in high regard.
We are on the floor of the AB desert surrounded by hiking and four wheel driving trails. The closest town is Julian to the north 45 minutes away and Ocotillo to the South 25 minutes away You can find hot springs 5 minutes away and the stars at night are endless. There are several small stores 10 to 15 minutes away to buy ice and sundries should you need them.
For those looking for outdoor adventures there are four hikes of varying levels directly from our site. There are hot springs 5 minutes away as well as four-wheel drive roads. If you want snow, Julian is 45 minutes away up the mountain and offers good opportunities for snow play. Off-road biking is available in Ocotillo which is 25 minutes away to the South. Road biking is super fun from our site as there is so little traffic where we are!
We live onsite and like to greet Hipcampers at arrival and then leave them to enjoy themselves. We do offer different extra experiences as well if you want to hike, learn to bubble, or learn to prepare raw food. Make sure you take a look at our ‘extras’ during booking if you would like to do one of these.
About the listing
This listing is our tent or platform style listing.
Pitch your tent or sleep outside on the platform at The Willows...OK the willows are "snags." But, out on the desert floor you will be with a walk to the new Willows Wash-room on a lined pathway. Enjoy the great outdoors knowing it's a 1 minute walk to toilet and shower. I like to wrap myself in a tarp, sleep on the platform and call myself a burrito.
The site has a cooking station and sink with water supplied through a hose. There is a cooler to use to store your dry goods. We have big brown umbrella for you to use and a private firepit.

The moment I saw Ellyn and Nimue again, I felt the positive energy of the camp in my soul. This camp makes me forget all my real life stress, real life logistics and problems instantly.
My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed the campsite, the stars, the bonfire, night walks under the full moon light, dancing to latin tunes around the fire...it was simply magical and therapeutic to our souls.
I cannot thank Ellyn enough for running a campsite as beautiful as this so remote in the desert. Ellyn has put in so much effort to making people happy. Very blessed to have met Ellyn and enjoyed this campsite.

Thank you to Ellyn for sharing such a special spot in the desert. The sink and bathroom setup made for a comfortable and pleasant stay in the hot desert. This camp spot was so unique and allowed us to fall asleep under shooting stars.
We loved camping at Ellyn’s place! The setting was beautiful and we enjoyed the campsite amenities. Ellyn herself is a gem.
If you want solitude, this is it. This was my first time staying on private land, instead of a campground. There was no one around. I could hike in to the desert, and saw no people, no buildings, heard to cars. It was great. The owners 5 acres is up against Cleveland National Forest (which is desert, not forest, just to be clear).
There was a cold front when I was there for 2 nights, and rain, so I opted to stay in one of her Airstreams instead of tent camping.
Tent camping on Ellen’s wonderfully eclectic property was a perfect way to enjoy the desert! She is a gracious host and we will be back again!
Ellyn's place was beautiful and completely silent. We had everything we needed with the tables, sink, hose, and bathroom facilities. We also got the chance to hike in the wash near the site. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back next time we're in Borrego
The campsite is absolutely amazing! Ellyn is so sweet, and the location is perfect for exploring and star gazing. There are easy trails in all directions, so if you don’t want to drive anywhere you can still enjoy nature.

Ellyn was kind, passionate and respectful! She really loves what she does and takes pride in sharing her land. The space was great - it had a platform, firepit (but you need your own grate if cooking on it) and running water - definitely recommend!
What a slice of desert heaven! The space itself looks out onto a valley, meandering walks thru ocotillo forests and boulder washes are right at your hearth, and Ellyn is a fount of knowledge. Her energy is so warm and kind! Bring a sleeping pad and bag and sleep under the incredible light show of night sky. Ellyn has a huge umbrella to sit under and read during the warmer daylight hours and there is plenty of cool water to fill your pack before a brisk morning hike. Overall, a gem in the desert!
