We are so excited to host you! This area has the unique designation of a community with privately owned property in the middle southwest portion of the Anza Borrego State Park.  Primarily due to rugged outdoor loving folks in the 1930's that would make the 6 hour journey by car from San Diego to spend time among the jackrabbits, kit foxes and burros!

About the property

Our property is not a commercial campground. You will be "glamping" at our home. The five acre parcels are "Jack Rabbit Homesteads"  granted in 1938 that ensure privacy and back up to Cleveland National Forest. George Leetch of Canebrake said it best...the people who come here "find the peace and beauty of the desert vastness a healing seclusion and comforting relief from the frenzied outside world”. We work to cultivate an atmosphere of united fellowship and good-neighborliness prevails, but a respect for privacy is held in high regard.

We are on the floor of the AB desert surrounded by hiking and four wheel driving trails. The closest town is Julian to the north 45 minutes away and Ocotillo to the South 25 minutes away You can find hot springs 5 minutes away and the stars at night are endless. There are several small stores 10 to 15 minutes away to buy ice and sundries should you need them.

For those looking for outdoor adventures there are four hikes of varying levels directly from our site. There are hot springs 5 minutes away as well as four-wheel drive roads. If you want snow, Julian is 45 minutes away up the mountain and offers good opportunities for snow play. Off-road biking is available in Ocotillo which is 25 minutes away to the South. Road biking is super fun from our site as there is so little traffic where we are!

We live onsite and like to greet Hipcampers at arrival and then leave them to enjoy themselves. We do offer different extra experiences as well if you want to hike, learn to bubble, Jr. Ranger or learn to prepare raw food. Make sure you take a look at our ‘extras’ during booking if you would like to do one of these.

About the listing

The 30 foot Avion trailer is the perfect quiet space to sleep and relax. When you close the door you are back in 1955 with two twin beds and a double to sleep four. The kitchen will crank out any food you want to prepare and then open the door and you are on the floor of the desert with a picnic table in the center and the fire pit to warm your morning or night! While we do have other listings on site our property has good privacy. Silence is the name of the game in the desert. The occasional hooting of an owl, the caw of a raven, or the howl of coyotes are the sounds of nature you will experience.

Sunrises and stargazing are always amazing. Even full moon gazing is a quite unique experience. This is a place to come to really get away from it all literally. However, we have amenities that make that getting away very comfortable. Hot showers, comfy beds, and real toilets.

The pricing is based on 2 person stay. There is a $15 charge per person per night for additional guests. Amenities listed below:

-Private shower and toilet for each listing

-Private fire pit

-Potable water via spigot

-Full kitchen with cooking utensils

-Wifi available, no cell service

-Fully house trained pets allowed

-Picnic table available

-Trash, Recycling and Composting bins available

-Laundry service available

Additional details to note

You will need to bring your own sheets and pillowcases as well as an ice chest and ice for perishables. If you would rather rent sheets from us please make sure to book that as an ‘extra’ when you check out. Bring your own firewood or buy some from us. Our family had a fantastic weekend in the Avion in Ellyn’s corner of AB paradise. It’s a unique setup and the perfect base for enjoying the quiet clarity of the desert. Our kids ADORED Ellyn and her pup right off the bat, and spoke to us like expert interpreters after learning from her about the (utterly adorable) kangaroo rats and other wildlife in area. And I know I’ll exceed the character count if I even start to talk about the bubble magic, so you’ll just have to go experience that for yourself. :)

Ellyn is a phenomenal host! Her entire set up is perfect for anyone looking for an easy and fun “glamping” get away. The trailer provided is more than enough space, it is clean and cozy. She invited us to use her fire pit which was perfect for the chilly nights. The location itself is the perfect amount of isolated - far enough away from any towns so you can enjoy the quiet and take in the beautiful desert night sky.
I am so happy I had the opportunity to stay with Ellyn truly a wonderful human and a wonderful host.

I spent two and two nights on a solo retreat in the Gypsy Wagon, and my only regret is not staying another night. Ellen and John are wonderful hosts and the trailer was equipped with everything I needed (except a fridge, so bring a cooler). The trailer is the perfect size for 1-2 people with a back gate that opens so you can lounge on the incredibly comfortable bed (it's like a giant sponge!) while enjoying a beautiful desert view (and sunset). There is wi-fi too.

The location is very close to a hot springs and Blair Valley, which is the starting point for the Pictographs and Morteros hikes that are well worth the time. I also really enjoyed just wandering around the sandy wash and taking in the blooming desert plants around the campsite.

It's about a 90-minute drive to Borrego Springs and the Anza-Borrego Visitor's Center, so plan accordingly. Also, not a lot of opportunities to buy gas, so make sure you fuel up in Temecula or Borrego Springs.

The camp is located in a very unique neighborhood, but it feels isolated enough so that you have privacy. I look forward to staying here again then next time I want to get away from my family.

This was our second visit to Ellyn H’s Land and we enjoyed it so much we brought friends this time. We stayed in the Avion while our friends stayed in the Silver Streak. We all enjoyed the quiet of the desert, cooking on the campfire, and nightly star gazing. Ellyn’s place is amazing and she’s just a wonderful person and host. We will come back again.

Ellyn's little desert camp was the perfect place for my friend and I to stay during our weekend trip to Anza Borrego. The trailer had everything we needed, and the view from the deck was gorgeous. Though the trailer has its own bathroom, we ended up using the more spacious "communal" bathroom across the way and seemed to have it to ourselves the whole time. Ellyn is an amazing host; she provided really helpful directions prior to getting there and gave us an extra water bottle to use on a hike, but otherwise gave us our privacy. Will definitely be recommending this spot to friends in the future!

Had a great time at their site over the weekend. Ellyn and John were kind and communicative through the entire process. Highly recommend bringing thick sole, hiking boots (the cholla can be pretty unforgiving). This is something to consider if you're bringing a pet too

The area doesn't have the best reception so I would recommend downloading the area map on your app prior.

There is a market not too far so if you forget anything, no worries

My 4-year-old daughter and I were so lucky to have had our first glamping experience with Ellyn. She was exceptionally kind, compassionate, and helpful in every way possible: from teaching us the basics starting a campfire to conjuring macaroni and cheese when my daughter wished out loud that she wanted it for lunch one day.

Misc extras:
- The extra blankets that were provided at night were helpful on the cold (for us) nights were perfect.
- The kitchen had everyone we needed less the food (be sure to bring a cooler for your perishables).
- If you are bringing a kiddo, they will need to keep their shoes on around most of the area as the cholla cacti are very much present outside of the immediate area of Ellyn's home.
- A couple of hours after leaving Ellyn's home, my kiddo wished that we could go back for another night. I couldn't ask for a better first glamping weekend.

We miss you two. Thank you for such a kind review. And the fact Sloane wants to come back makes my day! No my week! Come back and play when you can.
