Currently ONLY booking within 2 weeks or less - NOT accepting reservations more than 14 days out. Multiple nights have preference.

Many pictures are from before the flood.

At the top of a short steep hike, overlooking the ocean is a queen size bed in an outdoor open air structure built out of salvaged redwood, with an earth floor, a clear roof, hemp screens and cotton canvas curtains for doors. This listing does NOT provide bedding - you MUST CARRY your own pillows, blankets and sheets or sleeping bags up the hill. Arrive before dark to find your site.

In late January during the winter of 20’-21’ a massive rainstorm collided with the canyon, creating a flash flood of epic proportions. Due to a fire in the mountains the previous fall - it brought down gigantic redwood trees and boulders smashing through our main living quarters and out to sea. Many things were lost, some were spared and many things were gained.

A minimalistic homestead practicing simple, eco-sustainable and environmentally friendly living techniques. Using mostly all natural and organic materials to build and maintain a home in the forest with family, friends and animals. A place to help people, help themselves.

Away from the grid with no wi-fi, cell service or electricity. Propane is used for heating and cooling, wood for fires and point-of-use solar lighting. All contributions are put back into the land and help to facilitate the nurturing and sharing of this sacred space.

A spring fed creek runs through and out to the beach. Clean water is available for drinking.

There are many wild edible and medicinal plants as well as a veggie garden, fruit trees and chickens and ducks. A small communal guest kitchen is available with a two-burner stove and sink.

No personal fires. There are communal fire-pits near the creek.

Structures on the land are rustic, generally lightweight and built to blend in with the natural character of the land. There is an outdoor shower/bath and composting barrel poopers.

A great place for children with an accompanying adult to explore and learn about nature. A young boy lives here.

Dogs are welcome off-leash, unless they attack chickens/ducks, cats or other dogs. Please bury dog poop.

This is a remote area with beautiful beaches, creeks and hiking trails throughout. Some areas can be very dangerous with steep cliffs and loose rocks. Be aware that things like spiders, snakes, raccoons, mice, poison oak, etc.. exist in natural areas like this.

This is a busy curvy 2 lane mountain Highway. If a car wants to pass, pull over. Please carpool as parking can become tight.

No stereos or electronic music devices. Acoustic instruments are encouraged.

Alcohol is discouraged. It is not intended as a place to party or get drunk. A casual drink is okay.

Please do not bring excessive waste into the forest and pack out what you bring in. There is limited trash service, recyclables can be separated.

In order to be accepted please write “My party and I have read and understand the description” and then tell a little bit about yourself/party in your booking request.

Because there is no wi-fi on the land - the internet may not be checked daily. Responses will come from Gene, Elle and sometimes Maggie - who does not live on site.

It is advisable to check the weather before booking, especially in the winter - as there may be unsafe road conditions.

Absolutely loved this place! We booked same day with no expectations but Gene quickly confirmed our stay and gave us with great directions. Tent+bed exactly as pictured and the creek flowing aided in a great nights sleep.

What a magical place to enjoy Big Sur. Gene’s land was an oasis in nature- surrounded by lush greenery and breathtaking ocean views. My boyfriend and I had a spectacular visit. The gazebo was nestled in the redwood trees under the stars. Make sure you bring blankets! You’ll hear the ocean waves as you’re sleeping. We made a nice campfire at the property, too. Gene’s hospitality and adorable cats made the stay even better.

Gene was very nice and accommodating. A really perfect experience for my boyfriend and me! Only Rec I have is to read gene’s description, he describes it exactly how it is. I saw some reviews that bedding is provided… it is not (as he had explained in the description and I ignored cause of reviews) so bring your own! Luckily we had backup and he had a spare blanket but I can’t say that’ll be the case for everyone. Gene doesn’t sugar coat any of the experience, but if you are cool with meeting camping and glamping half way this is the place for you! I wish I could give it more than 5 stars, this campground is truly a special, magical place!!!

This place was magical. I booked the gazebo, and knew everything about it prior to arriving. I needed a break and nature from a very stressful work environment. From the moment I arrived, peace set in. I hiked my things up the small 2 minute hill to the gazebo. It's perfect - and I slept better than I sleep at home. The bed is super comfy, and with my own pillows and bedding (bring your own as instructed), it was more than a good nights sleep listening to the creek running. I woke up to the view of the ocean and the freshest air! I spent the day in Big Sur, but brought back food for my dinner and cooked it in the kitchen nook provided which is stocked and easily accessible and clean to use. I cannot thank this family enough for sharing their space and environment. I am always in awe of people who can live a gorgeous life like this that I have dreamed of. These guys are authentic and willing to share their space with those of use who dream of this life. Don't hesitate to book it and enjoy. Thank you G & B and Umi - your sweet little boy. Mel

We spent a wonderful night on Gene's land and wish we could have stayed longer. While watching the sunset from our gazebo, we were so excited to see a grey whale! Amazing view. We walked to the beach, cooked dinner in the kitchen, built a camp fire, bird/bat watched, and met the dogs and one very sweet cat. Would love to stay again. Thank you!

Loved staying at the redwood gazebo and meeting Gene and his family! They have a lovely piece of land and staying in the gazebo offered a beautiful view of the ocean. Would definitely recommend for anyone visiting the area.

The perfect stay on highway 1. I’d definitely recommend checking out the Mill Creek trail, and getting way back into the ventana wilderness! Just be mindful that it can be chilly at night ;) the extra down comforter that the hosts set out was a life saver. My partner and I were comfortable in the Redwood Gazebo with two down comforters, and we tend to run pretty warm.

Beautiful, natural land with just the right amount of comforts for my taste. It’s fairly barebones, but beautiful.
