Cows often stop by and sometimes you'll see jackrabbits running around.
Natural features you'll find at Big Spin Ranch Petrified Forest in Arizona.
Even on a cool day the sun is strong and there's no shade trees so come prepared for that.

We loved staying out at Big Spin Ranch! Rory describes it perfectly; it's unmarked land pretty much in the middle of nothing, and we loved it as a quiet solitary retreat. The land was perfectly clean and undisturbed, and we enjoyed hiking around seeing the desert shrubs and animals. It was great to let our four legged campers explore around off-leash without any worry, and they had a blast sniffing around! We were easily able to dig a pit for a great campfire and spent the evening cooking over the fire and enjoying the warmth. The freeway is close by, but we weren't disturbed by the noise at all. We would recommend exercising caution on the roads leading to the site, they are definitely a bit sandy and we had to watch the weather to make sure we didn't get stuck in the mud resulting from rain the following day.
We loved the closeness of this campsite to Petrified Forest National Park and it was great to have an affordable convenient camping spot right nearby.
Rory was super friendly, helpful and responsive. Property easy to find with following directions and gps coordinates. Served our purpose to star watch during a new moon in an open field. Had a truck and would definitely recommend that since property is soft dirt with small bushes and shrubbery you will have to drive over to camp off of the narrow dirt road. Beautiful sunset and sunrise. However, there were more distant neighbors (barking dogs) than I'd originally imagined as well as sounds from a train track nearby. My daughter slept through it just fine, but I was wishing I had brought my ear plugs!
Hard to find, peaceful night
The site was pretty hard to find. I would suggest sticking with the google maps coordinates and literally pointing your car at the arrow, because towards the end google maps doesn’t have all the dirt roads mapped out. We aren’t exactly sure if we stayed directly on her property. Once we got settled it was really nice. The sunset was incredible, we dug a fire pit for some dinner, and star gazed all night. It did get chilly at night so highly recommend layers! We drove a Subaru Impreza in there with no difficulty- just a little bumpy, so go slow. Over all it was a fine site for a one night trip! Just a little difficult to find since there are no landmarks on the actual property to look for.
Rory was helpful and the directions were clear. However, the site was less of a “site” than I expected. The area was not marked in any way, there was no real clearing (e.g., I could imagine someone clearing the somewhat significant weeds/brush), and no spots for fire. It was fine but definitely do not expect more than a piece of land. I supposed I should have expected that but many Hipcamps have a bit more area cleared, marker to let you know you’re there, spot for a fire, etc. even if they are pretty off the grid.
Perfect spot to spend the night
A beautiful camp site! 2 humans, 2 dogs, driving in a Honda Civic across the country. We booked with Rory last minute and she was responsive And friendly. Her directions to get to the site are thorough, just take your time reading them through and getting there. We were worried about the sandy bumpy road in, but it hadn’t rained significantly so we were fine. We passed one of the neighbors on the way in and she was very friendly. A beautiful and geologically rich setting to spend the night! We didn’t mind a little highway noise or trains in the distance. Quick access to Petrified Nat Forest the next morning.
Great spot but might be sharing it
The GPS coordinates provided were excellent and made navigating to the site easy. Huge bonus was a sign posted at the start of the property to inform you that you were in the right place. It was very convenient for camping outside of Petrified Forest NP. You can hear a little of the highway noise from the site but it's not bad. Also, there are cow pies but they were mostly frozen/dried and not a problem for us. I would have given the site a 5/5 but after we had been set up and got a fire going (we're tent campers), an RV pulled in and parked next to us. I was not expecting to share the space with another group, especially RV-ers. I would have moved to a different spot farther away if we hadn't already been established in the spot. That was the biggest downside to the spot. Otherwise, it was great.
Kind of hard to find. There aren’t many places to camp nearby so it’s a good place, albeit a little expensive for a patch of dirt. We camped in a dry pond and there wasn’t a soul in sight. Very peaceful
