Are you traveling from one place to another and you're just looking for a quiet place to get off the road, put your seat back, watch the sunset, and catch some heavy ZZzz's in your vehicle? You've found it right here at The Spark. This listing IS NOT FOR A CAMPSITE. Please Note: If you're in an RV or oversized vehicle, or if you're looking for a spot to camp in and spread out, you will need to book a campsite, please see my listing for "Dispersed and Scenic Camping." :)
But maybe you aren't interested in camping... you've been on the road for a while and just need a safe and comfortable place to pull over and sleep in your vehicle for the night. We've all been there during long road trips. The Spark offers a peaceful and scenic area you can unwind in. You'll have access to our clean Porta-Potty (nicer than you'd expect!) and all the common areas including a fire pit and game area located near your Sleepy Traveler Lot that you can take advantage of if you'd like! You may also enjoy wandering the property and exploring the entire area before you retire to your vehicle for the night. There are lots of great areas for taking pics and searching for various wildlife and stretching the legs!
The Spark is a private campground located on 40 acres of beautiful mountain desert prairie. If you'd rather reserve space for camping then please see our other listing page for that. :) Otherwise if you're just needing the overnight snooze in your vehicle then you're in the right place.
WILDLIFE! Although we are just a short drive off of the freeway (about 3 miles), we are so remote that there is always the possibility of interesting wildlife interaction. Most common are the lullabies of cricket music and coyote song. It's not out of the question to maybe spot the following animals in the area: cows, antelope, deer, javalina pigs and elk. Various snakes including bull snakes are possible as well as the slight potential for rattlesnakes. There are also adorable prairie dogs along with ravens, jackrabbits, regular rabbits, squirrels, field mice and maybe tarantulas. Of course you always want to keep an eye out for things like scorpions, fire ants, snakes, and cacti anywhere in Arizona. :) DON'T LET THIS LIST SCARE YOU! Many of these animal sightings can be rare and most all of these animals will go out of their way to avoid us. :) Just keep an eye out and be responsible with your food and garbage, and make sure your children and pets are under your supervision and control...
RESTROOM! Your Sleepy Traveler Lot is conveniently located near the restroom. It's a Porta Potty style restroom and it's much nicer than you'd expect. :) It also has our official Guest Book where you can share your experience in the area with other campers! There are solar lights inside but you'll want to bring a backup light for those times when it doesn't charge very well. With no electricity or lights throughout the property, walking around in the dead of night is like stumbling through inky blackness. So bring some reliable lighting with you!
WEATHER! Always check the weather at zip code 86320 before coming. We are open all year during any weather (excepting emergencies) so you are responsible for making sure the weather forecast is compatible with your expectations. When rain or snow is in the forecast it can get VERY tricky out here very fast with a high likelihood of getting stuck depending on your vehicle. So if you see that rain or snow is a possibility, be prepared for that. :)
HOST! The campground host lives on the property on a small homestead. This is where you will check-in (if we don't coordinate a "self check-in") and also where you can purchase gallons of water and firewood bundles. Free firewood is also available in the form of any dead wood that has fallen on the property! This can be used in the community fire pit which is located near the lot you will be parked in. And don't be afraid to ask your host for help if you forgot something you need... There is a possibility he has something you can borrow while you're visiting!
PACK IN/PACK OUT! Please be aware that there is NO TRASH PICKUP at this time for the campground so be prepared to pack out what you bring in. :) Any dumpsters you may see on your way in are privately owned by other people and are NOT for our use. :) ** Also The Spark is a private homestead - there are no hookups for RVs. This is a boondocking experience. :)
CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUT! Times are not strict. Come in as late as you need to... You will receive a welcome message on check-in day with CRITICAL info on how to get here so that if you're coming in late you won't get lost. Make sure you follow the directions in that message as typical GPS *may* send you down the wrong road which is easy to get lost on in the dark. This listing is considered "contact-free" -- for the Park and Snooze lot there is no required face-to-face check in. After you come through the gate you will drive down the driveway and park in one of the small field areas to the left in front of the colored ribbon wrapped fence posts (pink and yellow). You will also see the Porta Potty nearby for your use. It has solar charged lighting so it's easy to use at night. And it's cleaner than you'd probably expect. :)
THE PLAYGROUND! Please feel free to walk around and explore and stretch your legs while you're here. You can walk up the service road to the right of my trailer to see our camping areas if you'd like to come out camping in the future, or you can explore through the opening in the fence near your parking area and enjoy a hike on nearly 25 extra acres of property I call The Playground. :) Tons of interesting areas and pretty scenery - use this area however you like!
COVID-19 CONSIDERATIONS! I will maintain proper distancing from you if we interact while you're here. I also provide hand-sanitizer in the Porta John restroom for guests.
"THANK YOU" from the bottom of my heart for your interest in A Spark in the Dark private campground -- my passion. :) I will send you a welcome message on the day of your check-in with notes on directions to get here, current weather and the like. And I look forward to sharing this special place with you!

this was at the end of a track, but the fairy lights were a welcome sight and told me I had the right gate. The port a loo was lit, so no floundering in the dark and in the morning I had a walk and saw a sitting area, horse shoe game and other little touches. Whilst I didnt need anything, he had a "shop" in case you needed water or wood-maybe more, so this is not just a field and therefore would recommend Clifford's place to all
I loved my stay here! You can tell Clifford puts a lot of care into maintaining the property. And the stars at night were amazing! Would definitely recommend.

Clifford's park and snooze was EXACTLY what we were looking for on our road trip leaving the Grand Canyon! His directions were beautifully clear and his light up signs at his gate were EXTREMELY helpful in finding his place in the dark of night. Seeing it in the light of day I only wish we could have stayed longer to explore the land and take advantage of the inviting fire pit and cute games he had out. The music piped into the yes, very clean porta-potty, was an unexpected, sweet touch :) You can tell from the surroundings that Clifford takes exceptional care of his land. I don't receive texts so Clifford made sure to email me the directions and I really appreciated him taking the extra time to take care of us. Thank you so much, Clifford, for making our short time there so sweet!
This place is awasome and Clifford is the best! He did a really great job on his proprerty and he create a super welcoming camping! It is for real a spark in the dark! All campsites are clear, clean and with fire pits! Clifford is super friendly and ready to help and support you with anything you need! We would totally love to come by another time if we cross that road again! Totally recommended!
Clifford’s place was easy to find thanks to good directions provided in the message. We had a very quiet night’s sleep. I enjoyed hearing the coyotes barking after sundown. I would stay here again!
Stay was brief but nice. Google maps took me straight there and Clifford's directions were very helpful. Would revisit!
Great place, highly recommend! We just needed a place to sleep in our car for a couple of hours before continuing on our way. Really appreciated the space to give our dog some exercise too! Good directions to find the place.
