Maybe you aren't interested in camping... you've been on the road for a while and just need a safe and comfortable place to pull over and sleep in your vehicle for the night. We've all been there during long road trips. The Spark offers a peaceful and scenic area you can unwind in. You'll have access to our clean Porta-John (much nicer than you'd expect!) and all the common areas including a fire pit located near your Sleepy Traveler Lot that you can take advantage of if you'd like! You may also enjoy wandering the property and exploring the entire area before you retire to your vehicle for the night. There are lots of great areas for taking pics and searching for various wildlife and stretching the legs!
The Spark is a private campground located on 40 acres of beautiful mountain desert prairie. If you'd rather reserve space for camping then please see our other listing page for that. :) Otherwise if you're just needing the overnight snooze in your vehicle then you're in the right place.
WILDLIFE! Although we are just a short drive off of the freeway (about 2 miles), we are so remote that there is always the possibility of interesting wildlife interaction. Most common are the lullabies of cricket music and coyote song. It's not out of the question to maybe spot the following animals in the area: cows, antelope, deer, javalina pigs and elk. Various snakes including bull snakes are possible as well as the slight potential for rattlesnakes. There are also adorable prairie dogs along with ravens, jackrabbits, regular rabbits, squirrels, field mice and maybe tarantulas. Of course you always want to keep an eye out for things like scorpions, fire ants, snakes, and cacti anywhere in Arizona. :) DON'T LET THIS LIST SCARE YOU! Many of these animal sightings can be rare and most all of these animals will go out of their way to avoid us. :) Just keep an eye out and be responsible with your food and garbage, and make sure your children and pets are under your supervision and control...
RESTROOM! Your Sleepy Traveler Lot is conveniently located near the restroom. It's a Porta Potty style restroom and it's much nicer than you'd expect. :) It also has our official Guest Book where you can share your experience in the area with other campers! There are solar lights inside but you'll want to bring a backup light for those times when it doesn't charge very well. With no electricity or lights throughout the property, walking around in the dead of night is like stumbling through inky blackness. So bring some reliable lighting with you!
WEATHER! Always check the weather at zip code 86320 before coming. We are open all year during any weather (excepting emergencies) so you are responsible for making sure the weather forecast is compatible with your expectations. When rain or snow is in the forecast it can get VERY tricky out here very fast with a high likelihood of getting stuck depending on your vehicle. So if you see that rain or snow is a possibility, be prepared for that. :)
HOST! The campground host lives on the property on a small homestead. This is where you will check-in (if we don't coordinate a "self check-in") and also where you can purchase gallons of water and firewood bundles. Free firewood is also available in the form of any dead wood that has fallen on the property! This can be used in the community fire pit which is located near the lot you will be parked in. And don't be afraid to ask your host for help if you forgot something you need... There is a possibility he has something you can borrow while you're visiting!
**Please be aware that there is NO TRASH PICKUP at this time for the campground so be prepared to pack out what you bring in. :) Any dumpsters you may see on your way in are privately owned by other people and are not for our use. :) ** Also The Spark is a private homestead - there are no hookups for RVs. This is a boondocking experience. :)
CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUT! Times are not strict. Come in as late as you need to... This listing is considered "contact-free" -- for the Park and Snooze lot there is no required face-to-face check in. After you come through the gate you will drive down the driveway and park in one of the small field areas to the left in front of the colored ribbon wrapped fence posts (pink and yellow). You will also see the Porta Potty nearby for your use. It has solar charged lighting so it's easy to use at night. And it's cleaner than you'd probably expect. :)
THE PLAYGROUND! Please feel free to walk around and explore and stretch your legs while you're here. You can wander up the service road to the right of my trailer to see our camping areas if you'd like to come out camping in the future, or you can explore through the opening in the fence near your parking area (there is another entrance in the northwest fence) and enjoy a hike on nearly 25 extra acres of property I call The Playground. :) Tons of interesting areas and pretty scenery - use this area however you like!
COVID-19 CONSIDERATIONS! I will maintain proper distancing from you if we interact while you're here. I also provide hand-sanitizer in the Porta John restroom for guests. Please exercise recommended CDC guidelines when you use common areas like the restroom if there are others in that area waiting for its use. :)
"THANK YOU" from the bottom of my heart for your interest in A Spark in the Dark private campground -- my passion. :) I will send you a welcome message on the day of your check-in with notes on directions to get here, current weather and the like. And I look forward to sharing this special place with you!

Clifford is a great host! Super friendly and responsive. The campsite is a nice remote spot not far off the highway. Beautiful stargazing, a fire pit, and bathroom. Thank you!
Convenient and peaceful
Spark was a perfect spot for me. I was driving from California to Texas during the coronavirus pandemic. After 12 hours on the road, I needed a quiet and safe place to sleep in my car for the night. I couldn’t have asked for anything better than the Spark ranch. It’s located on a huge parcel of land just 5-10 minutes off of Interstate 40. Totally private and serene. I didn’t hear a single noise other than the birds. And the self check-in/out process was a breeze. There’s good cell reception and a trailer that’s been converted to an off grid restroom. It’s a no frills setup, but it’s clean and spacious. Overall it was a really peaceful and convenient experience. Great bargain at $15/night.
Safe, beautiful spot to stop for ni
When you get off the highway just keep following the road and directions. You will see the signs. We absolutely loved Clifford's property. If you need a safe place place to crash this is a very safe place. But I do recommend you upgrade to the camping for an additional $5. The views are unbelievable from the left hill. He was such a great host and his trusty companion, Gunner, was so sweet. We will definitely stay on our next trip out west, without question. We did not use the potty so we can't comment on that.
Absolutely fantastic spot! Cliff went out of his way to make us feel welcomed and offered a few suggestions for the best parking spots. Will most definitely stop here again next time we're traveling through the area. The star filled sky simply can't be beat!
Surrounded by peace and beauty.
I very very very much enjoyed my stay under the cool, peaceful, twinkly sky at the Spark in the Dark Campground. Clifford is a gracious host and took good care of me, I was able to park next to a couple trees on the expanse of his property and appreciate the nighttime sounds and views of the Ash Fork area. He also informed me when comet Neowise wouId most likely be visible. I like that his campsite has a few options for camping preferences.
Clifford posted perfect directions to the site and it’s super private and quiet. Definitely a good spot for dark sky views. Clifford was super welcoming and helpful.
The perfect road trip stop
What a great experience! I frequent the drive from Albuquerque to Los Angeles. I like to stop half way and sleep in my car- this was the perfect stop. As a single female driver, it was great to feel safe. Clifford is extremely respectful and friendly. As a camper/nature lover, it was so nice! I slept in the back of my forester with the trunk open, and enjoyed a magical sunrise. I walked around the property (where clifford mentioned was okay), and was struck by how beautiful it was. Would definitely stay again. Clean bathrooms, clear navigation to spot (after dark), pet friendly, and nice fire pits, were also a plus!
