Pitches with private, individual facilities on a Pembrokeshire farm

The pitches at Upper Scolton Campsite in Pembrokeshire are more than just a patch of grass. Here, your pitch fee gives you a fire pit, an equipped and undercover kitchen shed, your own hot-water shower, and your own composting loo. It also affords you plenty of space, since the five-acre camping meadow, which includes a peaceful pond, is set aside for just three pitches total. Plus, there’s sustainability here too: these well-serviced pitches run on renewable energy with solar panels powering both hobs and your hot-water shower.

“I thought about what I would want on a family camping holiday,” says mum-of-two and campsite host, Kathryn. She’s part of the family behind Upper Scolton Camping and the sheep and dairy farm it sits on. She decided that having everything from a tin opener to toilet roll provided, would make family camping easy—and it does. But these will suit anyone, especially campers who dread shared facilities and midnight treks to the loo. Each pitch can accommodate up to eight in a tent, motorhome or caravan. The price per pitch means, for those camping in smaller numbers, they may not be the cheapest pitch in Pembrokeshire but, take it from us, the inclusions mean they represent great value.

In addition to the pimped-up pitches, there are a few other advantages to camping on the farm. These include the chance of a farm tour and the opportunity to buy home-reared barbecue fodder from an honesty shop in a nearby barn. The pond on site is a wildlife haven and although it’s fenced for safety, you are welcome to a waterside wander as long as an adult is in charge. Beyond the farm a longer walk takes you into the neighbouring Scolton Manor and Country Park. Pembrokeshire’s county town, Haverfordwest, is just six miles from here. It’s worth a mooch about but, perhaps more importantly, it’s also a hub from where roads radiate out in all directions. Take your pick from St Davids, Broad Haven beach, Barafundle Bay, Pembroke Castle or even Tenby Harbour; all are within reach of the extra special pitches at Upper Scolton Campsite.

Nearby attractions

Upper Scolton Campsite is on a working farm which was once part of the neighbouring Scolton Manor Estate. Your hosts, the Reed family, are happy to show guests around the farm if the farm schedule allows. The Scolton estate is now open to the public and within walking distance. You can visit the Victorian manor house to find out about life upstairs and downstairs and to explore its 60 acre grounds. There are woodlands and parkland to explore on walking paths and mountain-biking routes. There’s a children’s play area and a tea room too. Located about six miles north of Haverfordwest, the county town of Pembrokeshire, it’s a good location from which to explore this lovely part of Wales. The closest places to hit the beach or the South West Coast Path are about 20 minutes away at Newgale (great for surfing) or Nolton Haven (good for swimming), Broad Haven or Little Haven. Even Barafundle Bay, often voted one of the world’s best beaches, is only a 40-minute drive away as is the UK’s smallest city, St Davids, to the west and Tenby Harbour to the south east. Pembroke Castle, Dale & Marloe Deer Park and Folly Farm Park are other attractions about a half-hour drive away.

Food and drink

Facilities for campsite cooking are pretty handy so cooking on site is possible even in bad weather and there are local goodies for sale in a rustic little honesty shop in the farmyard – look out for the sometimes available wagyu beef steaks. For more than what’s on offer there, head for Haverfordwest which has shops and supermarkets as well as a farmers’ market on Fridays. There are also plenty of places to eat out. Closer to the campsite, there’s a tea room just a walk away within Scolton Manor, open during the day, and for something more substantial there’s good pub grub at The Pump On The Green, less than two miles up the road in the nearby village of Spittal. Other recommended options for a meal out include The Wolfe Inn at Wolfscastle, five miles from site, and The Rising Sun Inn which is en route to/from St Davids.
