Set in a secluded spot on the Powys-Shropshire border, Ian and Jane Whyte's stunning six-acre smallholding plays hosts to Tipis at Ponty, a wonderful new adults-only site that welcomes campers and glampers alike (not to mention well-behaved dogs). This peaceful pocket between Oswestry (on the English side of Offa's Dyke) and Welshpool (on the Welsh) is bordered by the River Cain, making it a magnet for all sorts of wildlife, with kingfishers, herons and cormorants in attendance, and even the odd visiting otter.

Besides these curious creatures, there are few other guests who share the space. With just three spacious tent pitches, pair of tipis and the cabin, there's never any danger of overcrowding. The site is strictly a car-free zone (wheelbarrows are thoughtfully provided so you can trundle your gear to camp) so peace and quiet is all but guaranteed, while the trio of pitch-your-own plots range from riverside spaces to more elevated pitches with views to die for. All come with firepits and rustic seating, a fine addition for those who want to admire the unblemished night skies beside the warmth of a campfire.

The titular tipis (Mary and Mavis) are perfect for couples (although a third guest can be accommodated in Mavis). With a wood-burning stove, comfy double bed and bean bags to collapse in, there are few cosier settings to cwtch in after a day spent exploring. Facilities-wise, a pair of newly constructed wet rooms with hot showers and proper flushing loos provide ample ablutions for guests. Campers have use of the communal kitchenette, while the tipis boast their own kitchen shacks with gas ring stove.

Hosts Ian and Jane were chefs in their former lives and still run outside catering events in the area. Their culinary nous is evident in the range of homemade goodies available in the on-site honesty shop. Whether you're indulging in these delights or cooking your own freshly caught trout from the River Cain, 'The Sunset Shack' is a welcoming communal shelter in which to dine – set in the elevated upper copse it is, as the name suggests, a fantastic spot to watch the sunset over the Shropshire Hills.

All visitors must be members of the Greener Camping Club.Rita is our bespoke cabin , nestling in the woodland. Sleeping two it has a double bed, solar lighting and a woodburning stove, as well as comfy seating.  Rita is fully furnished and comes with bedding, towels and all crockery and cutlery. The balcony is the perfect place to eat breakfast and take in the morning sun. Rita has her own cooking pod with a mini fridge, decking, hammock and firepit. Rita has its own off grid bathroom facilities, as well as drinking water tap. Rita also can utilise the shared facilities, wet rooms, kitchenette and sunset shack to soak in different views. As Chefs and having a commercial kitchen onsite, we often do catered for evenings for the campsite guests when the site is busy.

It has a fire pit with a rustic bench and its own cooking area with a double ring gas hob, pots and pans, cooking utensils. Inside Mavis has a comfy double bed and a stove (for warming purposes only) it is at the bottom of the hill and benefits from the lovely relaxing rippling noise of the water. All crockery and cutlery are provided, as well as some kindling and logs to get you started. NO BEDDING, LINEN OR TOWELS are provided. In the top copse you will find the sunset shack a communal area for all to use to soak in the views and relax. Two bespoke wetrooms and a kitchenette are nearby with fridges, microwave and washing up facilities. As chefs, we have a commercial kitchen onsite and offer food nights for the campsite when it is busy creating food that helps make your stay memorable.

Our new deluxe Yurt Mary is situated at the top of our site benefiting from the stunning views. Mary is fully furnished with a double bed, solar lighting, sofas to relax, dining table and chairs and a log burner for those colder nights. We provide bedding, towels, and crockery, cutlery and cooking equipment, as well as kindling and logs to get you started. Yurt Mary has its own fridge, drinking water tap, cooking pod and off grid bathroom facilities in addition to a firepit. The communal areas are nearby and can be used by all, comprising of the sunset shack, campers cooking area, wet rooms and kitchen facilities. We are Chefs by trade and on busy days we offer food nights for our campers, to help make your stay memorable.

We had a great time at Tipis at Ponty! The location was beautiful, and close to many hiking areas, the lake, and tallest waterfall in Wales and England. The site was very clean and had everything we needed. Jane and her husband were very friendly and ensured we were all set. They have a great sunset shack on the hill to watch the beautiful colors in the sky, and we even played a few rounds of table tennis. We would highly recommend staying at Tipis at Ponty, and look forward to our next trip there!

We absolutely loved camping here and staying on the Daffyd pitch. Jane and Ian were so incredibly lovely and had some great recommendations for what to do in the local area. We also enjoyed an oven baked pizza on the Saturday night! Peaceful, beautiful and welcoming stay - truly special. We hope to be back.

We had a wonderful weekend at Tipis at Ponty! Yurt Mary was really comfortable and spacious and had everything we needed with lots of nice touches - especially brownies on arrival. The little garden area with outdoor kitchen had a great view over the landscape. The site and setting generally is beautifully maintained and feels very peaceful. The shop on site was well stocked with good food and Jane and Ian cooked delicious pizza for guests in the communal space one night. A breakfast order of bacon baps or croissants is available in the morning and there’s plenty of information provided on nearby places to walk or visit. We came with our dog and she appeared to love it too! We’d love to come back and would recommend to others.

Amazing campsite - the pitches are spread out and feel private. Great location with lovely views. The honesty box store had useful things like firewood and homemade sausages/fresh eggs/jam. The facilities (toilets, showers, 'sunset shack', washing up area, etc.) were cosy and high quality. Hosts were friendly. Great stay all round.

Amazing trip in Cabin Rita!

I don’t even know where to start..! What a find this place is, we loved it from start to finish. Very boho-esque with yurts, tipis and wild camping. The owners are really lovely, and ensured we had everything we needed! We stayed in Rita, a wooden cabin with private outdoor space, an outdoor shower and toilet, cooking facilities, a fire pit, and generally everything you could need they’ve thought of. With views of the sheep too which come right up to the fence, it was just lovely 🥰 Inside was just as wonderful, super comfy bed, the linen was 👌🏼 so cosy. As you can probably tell, we didn’t want to come home 😂 There’s also a river on their land, so we took our picking blanket, some drinks and snacks, and spent an afternoon down by there, with a little go in their kayaks! Then spent some time in the sunset shack too looking out at the beautiful view. Such a hidden gem, we’re going back again in the summer for a week 🥰

What an absolute dream of a campsite. We actually ended up staying on the ‘Daffyd’ pitch because we ended up being the only ones on site which was lovely (Daffyd pitch was closer to the unloading area and for only a one night stay it was nice to carry out bags a shorter distance). Gorgeous country side views and absolutely amazing facilities that really have the extra details nailed down. The sunset shack is a perfect covered spot for watching the sunset but also if you had some rain I imagine it would be a lovely little hideaway. There’s a hammock you can relax in near the chickens and the ducks, a ping pong table and a covered cooking area which campers can use. We cannot wait to come back!

We will be returning for sure, thank you for our stay! We loved the sunset shack, with the games, blankets and the campers cooking area! Lovely touches which make the campsite even better!

Algie is a beautifully sheltered and level pitch, with enough room for our big Dutch tent. The site is full of wildlife and wild flowers and Jane and Ian are superb hosts. The wild camping field is also very beautiful, we might stay there next time.

We loved this camp site. It was easy to find. Jane and Ian were very welcoming upon arrival and we were given a guided tour of the site. The site has limited numbers which is just want we wanted. It made the stay peaceful and relaxing. The facilities were much better than we expected. There were wet rooms, which were immaculate throughout the stay, and cooking facilities. We loved it and would return.

This is a such lovely campsite! We only stayed the one night as we were passing by but will definitely be back! We would recommend the Algie and Don Don pitches - so peaceful right by the river. All the facilities were very clean, fantastic hot water showers. There were lots of lovely touches around the site - the sunset shack in particular. The owners were very friendly but also gave you space which is just what we needed.

This was the nicest campsite we’ve stayed at! It was beautifully laid out with so many thoughtful touches (access to a kitchen with fridge? Brilliant!). Everything was clean and well cared for and the animals were lovely! A very laid back vibe. The lovely hosts did home made pizzas one evening and the food was delicious, 100% we will be back! Just for info (it didn’t bother us at all) If you have mobility issues I probably wouldn’t book algie or don don as they are at the bottom of the campsite with a slope up to the toilets.

Me and my partner really enjoyed our stay at Tipis for 3 nights! We wished we’d booked longer. Lovely and peaceful location. Fire pits on each pitch, seating and great views. There is a place to cook and eat if you need it. Logs for sale £5 and you can also buy eggs, jam, fire lighters and the list goes on with an honesty box. Toilet and shower blocks are kept really clean with hot water. Ian and Jane are welcoming and friendly. They really have thought of everything but keeping it as simple as possible. It’s lovely they have pigs, sheep, chickens, ducks and their cute dogs. Will definitely stay here again :)

This place is amazing! Ian and Jane have thought of everything you could possibly need. Table tennis, communal kitchen facilities, lovely clean shower facilities, the list goes on! Ian and Jane give great recommendations for places to visit and things to do with lots to explore nearby. Pizza night on Saturday was such a great treat too. This was such a peaceful break for us, we will definitely be returning!

Our short trip to Tipis at Ponty was absolutely wonderful, and we will definitely be recommending it to everyone we know! Ian and Jane were so friendly, and the campsite itself is truly a hidden gem (so peaceful!). The location is stunning with some amazing views but also in a very good spot and not far from other day out opportunities. The range of facilities like the wet rooms and kitchenette are clean and well maintained, and added touches like the Sunset Shack and the animals around the campsite made the place feel very welcoming. We will definitely be returning when we can.

Tipis at Ponty is a Private, Greener Camping Club, all visitors MUST be members. Tipis at Ponty is situated on the Powys/Shropshire borders and is a picturesque six acre small holding, with a wealth of natural beauty on the doorstep. the main site comprises of two fully furnished units, Yurt Mary on the hilltop, complimenting Rita our woodland cabin. Both have everything there for you, bedding, towels, crockery, cutlery, cooking equipment, cooking pod with double gas hob a fridge, an off grid shower and compost toilet. Tipi Mavis by the river, comes equipped with a bed and log burning stove inside and has a cooking pod with pots and pans, crockery and cutlery, as well as a firepit and rustic seating outside. Three grass tent pitches, Daffyd, Algie and Don Don, all with fire baskets and rustic seating. Adults and dogs are welcome. The campsite and our adjoining three acre paddock is bordered by the River Cain, for which we have fishing rights, and has beautiful views up the valley. We are a vehicle free site so provide you with wheelbarrows to transport your belongings. Our private main site boasts two bespoke wet rooms, a kitchenette (with fridge, microwave, kettle and washing up facilities) which has a little "honesty box" shop, stocking various products prepared by chefs, Ian and Jane, who occasionally will offer themed evening meals during busy periods. All pitches on the main site are welcome to use The Sunset Shack (and the other facilities) in the upper copse, our purpose built funky shed which offers a cooking area with double gas hob and seating for dining/relaxing, enjoying the views and spectacular sunsets. On the adjacent field is our wild camping area, edged by the river and serviced by an off grid (hot) shower and two compost toilets and a drinking water tap. We have four wild grass tent pitches and our Wild Tipi which is erected ready for your use, with a bed and log burning stove inside and a fire pit outside.. you bring everything with you but don't have the hassle of putting up a tent !! The Wild Tipis shares use of the rustic facilities. The village of Llansantffraid is half a mile away providing two mini supermarkets, pubs, curry house, chip shop, post office and petrol station. Our site is a perfect location to use as a base for cyclists, walkers, golfers, fishermen, sightseeing and retail therapy, or simply chilling on site.
Nearby attractions

It's just a short drive to Llanreaydr Waterfall or Pistyll Rhaeadr – among the highest waterfalls in the UK – and the stunning Lake Vyrnwyn is also nearby. There's no shortage of historic sites in the region with Powis Castle (01938 551944), Chirk Castle (01691 777701) and Whittington Castle (01691 662397) all within easy reach. There's also a wealth of outdoor activities to enjoy in the vicinity, including canoeing and both road and mountain biking. Your hosts are keen cyclists so can fill you in on all the best trails. 

Food and drink

Hosts and chefs Ian and Jane organise the occasional pizza / BBQ evenings for guests. The on-site honesty shop is also brimming with their homemade produce. Nearby eateries include the renowned Station Grill (01691 828478), which serves traditional dishes done elegantly, such as Welsh Lamb Rump with minted peas and port and red wine sauce. For something a little spicier, The Palace (01691 828152) is a cracking Indian for dining in or takeaways. Your hosts' personal recommendation is Plas-yn-Dinas (01691 829055), a beautiful timber-beamed restaurant in Llanfechain serving a refined menu of inventive dishes like tempura battered sea bass and cider-brined pork chop. There's a chip shop and cafe nearby, plus 2 mini supermarkets in the village ½ mile away.
