A five-pitch campsite on a 100-acre farm in the Towy valley

It’s not just what’s on the ground but what’s in the sky that makes Glanmarlais Camping a good place to pitch a tent. Out here in Carmarthenshire’s upper Towy Valley, the camping field is among 100 acres that are part organic farm part conservation project. And it's all under some of the darkest, starriest skies you’re ever likely to see (the western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park is just a few miles away and the whole area is part of an International Dark Sky Reserve). It’s lucky then, that there’s not much at Glanmarlais Camping to distract from all that natural beauty.

It’s a simple site that’s part of the eco-friendly Greener Camping Club. There are just five pitches in its gently-sloping, car-free meadow. Grass is left to grow long between the handful of well-spaced pitches, which are reserved for tents and campervans and on which campfires are allowed. Facilities are super simple: composting loos and a rustic shower (with hot water from an air-source heat pump), a washing-up sink, and some communal undercover space in a barn. Pitches are off grid but there’s electricity to the shared spaces, including to a fridge-freezer and a place to charge mobile phones.

If you like to be near a toilet, stay in the lower pitches but if you’re all about the view—book a place at the top of the field. From there you can see the peaks of the nearby Brecon Beacons. Those may be why you’ve headed in this direction and Glamarlais is a good location from which to enjoy them. Walks, wildlife, wild swimming and mountain biking opportunities abound. And while the edge of the national park is only a few miles away, you don’t even have to go that far to find a taste of those things. You can dip your toes in the River Marlais right here on site, head out on walks from the farm gate and keep your eyes peeled for farmland birds and red kites flying overhead.

Really enjoyed the peace and quiet and views at this campsite. Rosie was there to welcome us, show us around and help with our things. Compost loos and recycling facilities all set up well. A lovely little corner of the countryside and the campsite had an the facilities we needed. Thanks so much

Situated in the gorgeous Towy Valley, Glanmarlais Camping offers large pitches on mostly flat ground in a gently sloping meadow, with spectacular views of the Brecon Beacons and glorious constellations in one of the world’s darkest skies. The site is served by two compost toilets, a hot shower, a fridge/ freezer and a covered dining area. It is ideally located for world-class walking, mountain bike riding and motor touring, but also for young families looking for a a quiet and relaxing rural retreat. Kids love to play in the long grass, and paddle in the river Marlais. Set among 100 acres of grassy fields and ancient woodlands, the camp is situated on an organic farm, with a focus on a conservation.
Nearby attractions

Glanmarlais Camping is situated in the upper Towy Valley, not far from the western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. There’s plenty of walking, road cycling and wild swimming to enjoy in the area. Head into the park, for a great circular walk between the two glacial lakes of Llyn y Fan Fach and Llyn y Fan Fawr; perhaps even taking a chilly dip too. The Usk Reservoir is another nice place within the park for a walk, about 17 miles from site. It’s a similar distance to the Llyn Brianne Dam and Reservoir where there are more waterside walks. If it’s a swim you want, though, perhaps head to Junction Pool or Wolf’s Leap Wash Pool, both near Llanwrtyd Wells, and about a half-hour drive from the campsite; if a dip in the Marlais River on site is not enough. There’s mountain biking at Cwm Rhaedr, 12 miles from the campsite, and Brechfa Forest is five miles further. Dolaucothi Gold Mine, Carreg Cennen Castle, the Red Kite Feeding Station, the National Botanic Gardens of Wales and the wooded National Trust estate at Dinefwr, are all within 20 miles.

Food and drink

The closest place to pick up a pint of milk, or other campsite supplies, is Llanwrda Post Office, three miles away. Beyond that, head for either Llandovery (seven miles) or Llandeilo (nine miles), both lovely market towns with plenty of shops and eateries too.
