A pair of bell tents on a small permaculture farm in Pembrokeshire

The bell tents at Cynefin Farm are tucked in a sheltered spot behind the farmhouse belonging to Nim and Pete. The homely location is a hint at how welcoming this pair of Hipcamp hosts are. You’ll find that out as soon as you arrive on their seven-acre smallholding in Pembrokeshire – they'll give you a tour, introduce you to their animals, and explain all about how they are putting permaculture into practice. They’ll also reveal their favourite places in this part of west Wales: historic villages, lovely beaches, ancient woodlands, and secret swimming spots. These are some of the things that drew the family here. They’ll also be part of the reason you’ll have a good time if you visit.

The other is Cynefin Farm itself, where each of the two bell tents can sleep up to four people. There’s a notably natural feel to almost everything. Instead of cutting trees to fit a picnic bench in a suitable spot, it’s been built around them. Where timber has been used in the set up, it’s been left in a natural form. This light touch is apparent in everything Nim and Pete do – and that’s the whole idea. Nothing is here unnecessarily. Instead of building new facilities for glamping guests, they have used an existing but private part of their house. As part of that deal, one of the bell tents, Hawthorn, has an indoor kitchen while the other, Chestnut, has an outdoor (but covered) one. Both are well equipped and there’s also a shared indoor bathroom with a shower and loo.

The idea is to regenerate and improve the land in a sustainable way – and by staying here, you’ll be part of that too. It’s an inspiring and eco-friendly place to hang out but it’s also in a great location. One from where you can stroll to a 16th-century tavern in 15 minutes or walk all the way to the wide sandy beach at Newport in an hour. For a more adventurous swim and a scramble head, ask for directions to the Witches Cauldron. For watersports head for Fishguard and to explore an ancient woodland there’s Ty Canol, none more than 20 minutes’ drive away.

Welcome to our 7 acre wild and beautiful smallholding, deep in the Pembrokeshire coast national park. Our beautiful chestnut tent is under a horse chestnut tree, and is tucked away behind the farmhouse in a little shaded glade. The tent has an extremely comfortable proper double bed and mattress, and we have 2 single camp beds we can set up inside on request so they can fit up to 4. The beds are warm with thick feather duvets and extra blankets, and there is also a wood burning stove in the tent to stay cosy on cold evenings. There are two tents in this little glade, the only difference being that this one, Chestnut, has an outdoor kitchen in an oak framed shelter just beside the tent, and the other tent, Hawthorn, has an indoor kitchen, inside the farmhouse. Each tent also has it's own outdoor seating area, with a fire dish and grill for bbq. The kitchen is fully stocked with all crockery, utensils, pots and pans and cutlery. There is a double gas ring burner for cooking on, a toaster and a fridge. (Please be aware this tent has gas ring hobs and fire pit bbq, but not an oven - if you think you'll need one then our Hawthorn tent would suit you better). There is also a washing machine and dryer that you are welcome to use inside the house. The toilet and bathroom are just a few seconds walk, in the farmhouse, and are shared between the two bell tents. This tent is for those that like to live a little closer to nature and enjoy cooking and eating outdoors, whilst having everything close at hand.

Welcome to our 7 acre wild and beautiful smallholding, deep in the Pembrokeshire coast national park. Our beautiful Hawthorn tent is under a hawthorn tree, and is tucked away behind the farmhouse in a little shaded glade. The kitchen for this tent is indoors in a private room in the farmhouse and is just for you, and is fully stocked with all crockery, utensils, pots and pans and cutlery. There is a large farmhouse gas ring burner, a full oven, a fridge, toaster, microwave, access to a freezer, breakfast bar, washing machine and dryer. The toilet and bathroom are just a few seconds walk, in the farmhouse, and are shared between you and one other bell tent, which is in the same glade. Each tent has it's own kitchen, fire pit and outdoor seating area, with a fire dish and grill for bbq. This tent is for those that want to live close to nature, but also appreciate having the comforts from home easy to access. As for what to do, the wide sandy beach of Newport sands is about 7 minutes drive away, or a one and a half hour walk on a lovely track through the woodland following the river, for those that like to take their time. There are many more beaches and coves to explore too. The coastline that wraps around us here is perfect for swimming, kayaking, coasteering, sailing, and hiking the coast path, and the ancient SSSi oak forests of Ty Canol are just a few minutes from here too. The farm looks out over Carn Ingle (Angel mountain) - which is dotted with neolithic sites and ancient standing stones and burial grounds. There are many lovely local villages, with a wide selection of cafe's, pubs, restaurants, farm shops and everything else you may need. Cardigan is 15 minutes drive, and is a lovely market town with art galleries, supermarkets, a castle and many other things.

Welcome to your lovely bell tent home, on our 7 acre homestead and permaculture project. We are located in the National Park in wild and beautiful northern Pembrokeshire, surrounded by spectacular coastline, sandy beaches, ancient culture and history, sacred mountains, and abundant wildlife, with incredible views out over Carningle mountain. We moved onto this smallholding in November 2019 and we love it more every day. The site is a long abandoned old garden centre, and we are restoring some of the great glass houses and finding old tangled vines and fruit treasures! We are regenerating the land with permaculture and regenerative agriculture techniques, which we will happily share with you if you are interested. You are very welcome to wander around and explore and meet our friendly animals, and can easily get lost amongst wild flowers, blackberries, owls and songbirds. We have ducks, hens, ponies and very friendly cats. We have two children ourselves and love it when families to stay with us, but please do remember that this is a long term renovation project and busy working smallholding, and so we need you to be responsible for your children at all times. You're all welcome to wander around and explore whilst you're here. We have two tents available, Chestnut and Hawthorn, and they are set up in a little woodland glade behind the farm house, sheltered from the wind. The tents have their own kitchens and share a bathroom. Both can be booked together to accommodate two families/couples coming together.
Nearby attractions

You are welcome to explore the seven acres at Cynefin Farm and there are plenty of places to walk too. The closest place to head for is the village of Nevern, about a mile away, where there’s an ancient church and a pub. For a longer walk, head all the way to the coast at Newport (about four miles) for the beach, to explore the town or to join the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. For a full day trip, do the walk to Newport and then, after refuelling in town, hike up Mynydd Carningli (346m) for fantastic views of the area. There are mountain bike trails here too. Newport Sands is a big sandy beach backed by dunes, separated from Newport town by the River Nevern. The estuary there is a haven for sea and wading birds. Another great coastal spot to walk (or drive to) is Witches Cauldron, about an hour’s walk away. This collapsed sea cave is a great place for swimming and scrambles – ask Nim and Pete for tips. For more of that, head to Fishguard (10 miles) where you can join guided kayak sessions or go coasteering. The ancient Ty Canol woodland is seven miles from the farm.

Food and drink

Nim and Pete will let you know about what produce is for sale fresh from the farm when you book or on arrival. There’s likely to be some meat and veg from their no-dig garden. For more than that, you can pick up supplies in Newport (under four miles) where there’s a butchers, a health food shop and a Co-op. For something to eat out, the Trewern Arms in Nevern is a good option and just a 15-minute walk away. There’s also plenty of places in Newport (an hour’s walk or a 10-minute drive away) including The Canteen, which Nim recommends, for pizza, The Golden Lion and Llys Meddyg, for a special meal out.
