A secluded, riverside bell tent in the heart of The Black Mountains

Settle into your own private hideout with a stay at Cuddfan, where a single bell tent is pitched by a river in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. This tucked-away location offers under-canvas glamping for a couple, family, or solo camper who want an adventure on their own. Your camp, surrounded by mature trees, has its own covered kitchen, compost loo, and hot-water shower in addition to the bell tent. In that, you’ll be as comfy and warm as camping can be with a memory foam mattress on the double bed, two single futons, and a log burner too.

This place offers a kind of Huck-Finn experience made easy. It’s perfect for families who aren’t quite ready to go it alone or couples who don’t want to carry and set up their own kit. You park your car a short distance away from Cuddfan, which all adds to the sense of adventure, then make your way down to the clearing. It’s just about the perfect pitch; with water, woodland and Welsh hills all around and the luxury of private facilities to top it off. Here, you can really relax surrounded by nature for a few days. The tent itself is spacious enough for up to four but not too big for a couple, and dogs are also welcome.

You can fish in the river or, perhaps, even take a dip and you can use local footpaths to head straight out on lovely walks in the surrounding national park. This western part of the Brecon Beacons is dominated by The Black Mountains, the tallest of which is Sugar Loaf. It’s also the closest peak to camp and can be tackled on foot without getting in the car. And while you feel totally secluded at your hideout, you’re not too far from anything you might need. There’s a lovely welcoming country pub a 15-minute walk down river and the picturesque town of Crickhowell is a five-minute drive away.

Cuddfan - The Hiding Place
We loved the beautiful setting and peaceful location - the sound of the rushing river and bird calls were all that could be heard. As far as camping in November goes, we got lucky and it was dry and very mild. The camp facilities were great, with most things supplied, and importantly, the beds were comfortable. We can recommend the local pub and would love to come and stay again.

Affordable Wild Woodland Glamping
The site is beautifully secluded. I received a comprehensive message prior to my arrival with full details of the set up and directions and location

Cuddfan - The Hiding Place
Very nice place to stay. Calming river just by the tent and kitchen area. The inclusion of the firepit and sitting arrangement in the Kitchen made for a nice vibe once we got back from our hikes in the black mountains. The shower was above average, and the toilet is what you would expect from a composting toilet. All in all the facilities were good. I would recommend to bring a torch though as not all of the lighting worked.

Cuddfan - The Hiding Place
What an incredible place to stay. Feels like you’re wild camping, but in comfort and style! The tent is beautifully kitted out, we had great nights’ sleeps, and the location is superb, with a river to paddle and swim in, and footpaths up to sugarloaf just a hop over the fence. Marc was incredibly quick to respond to any messages, and was a fantastic host. We’d love to come back.

We had the best time at Cuddfan Bell Tent - a beautiful hideaway accompanied by the soundtrack of a gushing stream, bird song and a crackling fire! The tent and kitchenette is well thought out and has everything you need for a cosy and comfortable stay. There's a nice pub in walkibg distance and fantastic scenic walks a short distance away including Grwyne Fawr resevoir as well as Sugar Loaf and Table Top Mountains. Crickowell is a lovely bustling town to explore too. Would love to come back to stay at the Bell Tent!

Cuddfan - The Hiding Place
Happy haven
Gorgeous spot. Quiet and wild yet straight over the fence to a plethora of walks (Table mountain/Sugarloaf). Amazing amenities and lovely warm shower. Fast flowing river- (ensured children and dog stayed away) produced an incredible calming atmosphere. Dawn chorus amazing and saw excellent butterflies (due to excellent wild flowers) and even a wood warbler! Slept well despite rain- woodburner great. Loved the pub along the river - friendly and curry great. Took our recycling home. Will go again (children requested that we go every year).

Our beautiful tents are nestled in the heart of the Black Mountains in the Brecon Beacons. It is a secluded spot on the bank of the River Grwyne or a private spot in the woodland with only the sound of the river and nature in the woodland to keep you company. The tents have a comfy beds, one has a wood burning stove, and they both have hot showers, toilet and off grid power supplied by solar panels. Relax by the outdoor fire pit after a BBQ or visit to the local pub. Pets Welcome!
Nearby attractions

The Cuddfan bell tent is pitched on the banks of the River Grwyne with private access to a mile-stretch. Glampers are welcome to fish or wild swim. There’s a footpath directly from site which you can use to head straight out on walks into the Black Mountain’s highest peaks including Sugar Loaf. The town of Crickhowell is only two miles away and offers another great place to head out on walks from – so much so that it has an annual walking festival in March. It’s also a good place to refuel at and stock up on outdoor gear. Likewise Abergavenny, which is six miles from the site. It’s all within Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park so there’s plenty of other active adventures too: horse riding, mountain biking, caving and climbing among them. Plenty of those can be enjoyed with expert tuition from Llangorse Multi-Activity Centre (11 miles away). It has some undercover adventures too which are great for all ages and rainy days. And for younger kids Cantref Adventure Farm is a great option for a day out (16 miles).

Food and drink

The Dragon’s Head is a friendly, family-run country pub that does food (Weds-Sunday) and is less than a mile away. You can reach it on foot via a riverside footpath from the glamping site. It’s the perfect place for a meal out during a stay here – but there are also plenty of other options in Crickhowell (two miles) including The Bear and The Dragon Inn. A little further, in Llangattock village, The Vine is recommended for its menu showcasing Welsh produce and The Horseshoe for its friendly atmosphere and home-cooked food. Crickhowell is also the closest place to pick up supplies if you are cooking on the glamping site. It has independent shops including a grocery store and a butchers. For more, head to Abergavenny where there are more shops and eateries and a market in its market hall on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
