Dulais Valley Meadow is home to a single shepherd’s hut with a hot tub in a paddock that’s filled with establishing wildflowers. It’s surrounded by fields which are grazed by a herd of what have been dubbed “the world’s cutest sheep” (valais black nose, if you’re wondering) and what must be the world’s cutest cows (Highland cattle, of course). So far, so idyllic – but there’s more. It’s also just a 10-minute drive from one of the UK’s most-scenic roads and five miles from Llandeilo: the best place to live in Wales, according to The Sunday Times in 2022.
Despite the accolades and attention on places close by, the Dulais Valley has escaped the headlines and Dulais Valley Meadow itself remains a sleepy spot. It’s part of a 14-acre smallholding where sheep, cows, pygmy goats, horses, donkeys and chickens are definitely more pets than produce. But that’s not to say you won’t have a taste of seasonal local goodies while you’re here. Owner Amy’s daughter is likely to bring you some farm-fresh eggs and the lavender and honey Welshcakes you’re gifted on arrival are just the thing to enjoy in the meadow setting.
The off-grid, timber-clad shepherd’s hut is as quaint as its surroundings, with white-washed and pale duck-egg walls, a little log burner and a tiny kitchenette. It sleeps two but there’s space to host extra guests on a tent pitch just outside. There’s a four-seater, wood-fired hot tub and a fire pit, too, alongside outdoor seating and your own facilities hut with a compost loo and hot water shower.
The River Dulais passes close by and the site has fishing rights on a 200 metre stretch. If you’re more interested in cooling off with a refreshing paddle, there’s a little pool in the river that’s just right for that – and it’s a lovely place for a walk. You won’t want to miss a trip or two into Llandeilo where you can find out what all the fuss is about. Spoiler alert: it’s about colour, character, community, cafés and a great location on the River Twyfi. Further on, the Brecon Beacons, that scenic route (the Black Mountain Pass), mountain biking and more are all about a 20-minute drive from here. You’ll have to ask Amy if she thinks this is the best place to live but we can tell you right now that it’s a pretty good place for a holiday.
