Off-grid glamping in the hills just north of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park

On the way to Calon Y Goedwig Glamping, you get a taste for the rural scenery that will surround you during your stay. It’s all rolling hills and fields of sheep. But nothing quite prepares you for the peace and quiet you’ll find. The site consists of just two spacious glamping tents pitched on a hillside sheep farm in Carmarthenshire. It’s secluded and surrounded only by the sounds of nature and countryside life. Red kites might fly overhead, tractors might trundle by but, generally, you can forget the world outside and simply enjoy life off grid and under canvas.

Choose from a classic bell tent and a Touareg tent. Both are set up to provide a base for up to six people and are perfect for families. They each have their own composting loo and hot water shower as well as their own worktop and camping stove in the shared kitchen shed. It’s a great set-up for easy under-canvas stays. Everything is provided so you don’t have to bring a lot: bedding, towels, cooking kit—just about everything is here. But remember: it’s all off grid. Comfortable as this place is, it’s still about getting back to basics.

To that end you’ll enjoy the simple things in life during a stay here: having a campfire and toasting marshmallows under starry skies, going for a walk in the countryside and using the provided binoculars to watch red kites flying by. But, more than likely, you’ll want to explore what surrounds you further. This site is three miles from Llandovery, just outside Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (formerly the Brecon Beacons) so there’s plenty to see and do—and most of it is in the great outdoors.

Celyn Bell Tent
Beautiful location & adventure
Beautiful location, stunning bell tent with comfy beds. The outdoor kitchen had everything you needed, cooking utensils, cups, plates, cutlery, foil, bbq utensils, Elaine has thought of everything! The bell tent had lots of games for the children to play, binoculars were a firm fav for bird watching, we saw an owl! Lots of little thoughtful touches like marshmallows and guides for the area. My 12, 6 and 4 year old absolutely loved it there, would certainly recommend!

Nearby attractions

Two long distance walking routes pass close by Calon Y Goedwig Glamping: The Cambrian Way and The Heart of Wales Trail. You can use either to head out into the surrounding countryside on a signposted route up and down the hills. There are, of course, plenty more opportunities for hiking in the nearby Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park (four miles). The park’s biggest peak, Pen Y Fan is about 30 miles away. For mountain biking there are plenty of options with those at Cwm Rhaeadr Forest (nine miles from site) one of the closest places to head for. The town of Llandovery is only three miles down the road, there among the shops and eateries, you can find out more about the area’s history at the Llandovery Museum and at the ruins of the 13th-century Llandovery Castle. For wildlife, there’s RSPB Gwenffrwd Dinas (12 miles) and the Red Kite Feeding Station at Llanddeusant (nine miles).

Food and drink

Llandovery, three miles down the road, has shops and eateries in town including the cafe at Llandovery Craft Centre, which is good for coffee and cake and The Bear on Market Square for lunch or dinner. Out of town, The Neuadd Fawr Arms (which is not far from site as the crow flies but seven miles by road) offers good food in a scenic setting with a garden. A little further in the same direction is The Royal Oak Inn (nine miles), also with a good menu and a beer garden.
