Boutique camping in a supremely secluded setting between Snowdonia and Anglesey

There’s a real sense of community at Wales’ Cae Lal. From breakfast with your fellow campers in the converted cow shed, to evenings spent around the communal campfire, you’re destined to make a few likeminded friends at this eco-friendly camping and glamping site. A short drive from Anglesey and at the foot of the Snowdonia mountains, just 15 spacious pitches and a lone bell tent make up this secluded, family-run campsite. It's the perfect place to reconnect with nature, as well as with a bunch of new faces.

There's a lot thats unique about this campsite. But its setting is particularly special. Surrounded by light woodland and with a boardwalk across a miniature wetland, spacious, circular pitches are mown into the flat ground in a particularly private-feeling field (vehicles are parked separately to ensure the land remains unspoiled). Along with the fifteen pitches, there’s also a boho-style bell tent for glamping. You'll be provided with most of what you need for a good night’s sleep and relaxing morning – a proper double bed, cosy blankets, and indoor and outdoor seating – though guests will need to bring their own duvet or sleeping bags.

The amenities are also a real highlight. 'Eco-friendly' does not mean 'basic'. The boutique washing area is a thing of beauty and adds a touch of luxury to proceedings. Hot showers and compost loos look worthy of a hipster hotel and the sinks could be from the pages of a design magazine. There's also a small play area for the kids, as well as a fenced off pet area for when you want to let your dog off the lead.

Plan a day out to Anglesey during your stay, a small island with plenty to do. Take the scenic journey over the Menai Suspension Bridge with views over the tidal water of the Menai Strait, just a brief car journey away from Cae Lal. Or take the kids and the dog to Snowdonia, where you can take the famous Snowdon Mountain Railway to the peak of the titular mountain, hike the Pyg Track or mountain bike in Beddgelert Forest.

Caban Marta
Perfect family glamping experience
Myself, partner and 3 year old stayed here for a weekend in May in Cabin Martha and it was the perfect glamping experience for us. Bethan and family were so welcoming, they have created a really peaceful sanctuary on their site and we really value their ethos. We were free to explore the site and enjoyed playing ball games on the grass and using the children's toys in the communal barn. Our son loved watching the chickens and spotting the horse and cows in nearby fields. Cabin Martha is a great space for a family of 3 to relax after a day spent outside, it has everything you might need and the decor and locally sourced cushions/blankets were really beautiful. We spent alot of time in the private garden space playing, eating meals and having a fire. We will absolutely be back to stay when in the area again and would highly recommend the site. Fantastic value for money. We visited nearby Conwy Castle, Newborough beach, Llandudno and Zip world Penrhyn quarry whilst visiting.

Camp just for me
Absolutely awesome camping site. I had the full camp just for me so everything was very well cleaned and ready to use. Decorations and solar powered lights give the camp an amazing vibe. The facilities are child friendly, and more than enouth for any family or group to enjoy. Definitely recomend.

Cae Lal Camping
The best campsite I have ever stayed at. So well equipped with everything that you could possibly need, a well equipped common room with tea and coffee facilities, microwave, toaster and fridge. The fire pit was lit for us on the first night and everyone was extremely welcoming. The wash & toilet facilities were great. All the home comforts whilst also feeling that you are camping as the field is left to grow with the exception of the camping spots which are mowed. A very environmentally conscious campsite in a beautiful part of wales. I will be back! Thank you!

I don’t want you to come here…
…we want it all for ourselves..! This campsite is simply the best I have ever stayed at (and that’s a lot!). It’s eco credentials are first class without being inconvenient or in any way ‘lecturing’. The pitches are thoughtful and well spaced. The showers are beautiful & stocked with toiletries so lovely that we ventured to Anglesey to get some for ourselves, and the community space is brilliant and well equipped, giving you ‘camp-luxe’ option whenever you want it. But the biggest plus of the site are the incredible duo that own it, their staff and their band of small 4 & 2 legged helpers. I have never come across people so dedicated and hard working who just want you to fully experience the beauty of the space they have found, and thoughtfully created. Their generosity of spirit, energy and time made for an incredible holiday for us and our 2 (big) children. Packed with adventure, relaxation, outdoors time and hygge. We’ll be back. Lots. And of course, we loved meeting Doti!

Lovely quiet campsite
As soon as we arrived we were greeted warmly and directed where to park. We were shown the site and got to choose our own pitch, all the ones available were suitable and well spaced from other campers, we chose one next to the glamping pod a short walk from the showers and toilets. The washroom facilities are excellent and the natural products provided are a nice touch. The site was quiet even though it was nearly full, I would definitely stay here again.

Bethan & Jacob were really friendly & super accommodating throughout the whole process. They helped me out when I'd booked the wrong weekend, they found a pitch out of the way so we could be a little freer around the 10pm sound curfew & didn't grumble when we had to add two more cars. The place itself is refreshingly eco friendly & ultimately has a very cool aesthetic. 100% would and will stay again. I can't wait to see what Cae lal becomes

Cae Lal Camping
Magical!
I can’t recommend this site highly enough! This was our first ever camping trip and we were blown away with every element. Bethan and Jacob have literally sprinkled magic onto everything…….the eco-friendly showers and loos with supplies of hair and body wash products specially selected to be kind to the eco-system…..the communal picnic and campfire area and woodland path all beautifully lit with the most pretty solar powered lights….the meadow with it’s carefully mowed out patches to designate the tent pitches and surrounding high growing grass offering privacy and a connection with nature……supply of wheelbarrows to make carrying all your equipment to site so much easier…….and my most favourite part, the solar lit raised path over the reeded grasses - made the late night loo walk so magical. And whilst it’s just a 5 min drive from a very well stocked Tesco (we were able to buy a sleeping bag here after discovering I’d left one at home), it’s location feels idyllic and far enough away from the hustle and bustle of town life. When asked our 10yr old said he loved it and doesn’t ever want to camp anywhere else except here. Recommendations don’t come better than that!

Cae Lal Camping
Better than a hotel
We really enjoyed our two nights camping at Cae Lal. It’s quiet and well laid out with excellent facilities that are in the process of getting even better. Despite being very close to a large, well stocked Tesco’s and easy to get to the site is in the heart of the countryside. The pitches are well spaced out and a decent size. There are two composting toilets, two “normal” toilets and two showers, all clean. The showers and the bathroom sinks are significantly better than some I’ve found in “luxury” hotels. The washing up area is well laid out and wouldn’t be out of place in a commercial kitchen. A lot of thought has clearly gone into the small practical details like the number and location of standpipes. It’s obvious “environmentally friendly” is more than just a marketing ploy at this site. The owners are friendly and helpful. There’s a very comfortable covered area with a kettle, microwave, toaster and (soon) a sink. There’s a large fire pit just outside the covered area where the owners hosted open house round the fire when we stayed. We were far too tired to join but the next morning other groups kept telling us it had been a great evening. If there were more campsites like Cae Lal hotels would go out of business.

Cae Lal is a little piece of paradise. The tent was in a beautiful wildflower meadow. It was spacious and luxurious. The facilities were really lovely with a delightful waterfall shower and beautifully smelling and eco-friendly toiletries available. A perfect 10 of a campsite!

From the host
If you're looking for a magical stay with excellent facilities, look no further. Cae Lal is a family-run boutique, eco camping and glamping site and we put nature, sustainability and a warm Welsh welcome at the heart of everything. Cae Lal is nestled in a secluded, unspoilt landscape close to Anglesey beaches and Snowdonia National Park. A tranquil site, yet extremely well-located on the outskirt of Bangor. Only 10-minutes drive from Anglesey and 15 minutes' drive form Zip World Penrhyn Quarry, and less than five-minutes from major retail shops and restaurants. It's a great base for exploring north Wales. Cae Lal is the ideal destination to truly unwind. A place rewild and reconnect with nature. Enjoy meandering walks through beautifully solar lit woodland, explore unique marshland. Do a spot of birdwatching. Toast marshmallows around the communal campfire, socialise in the shed if you fancy meeting new people, or seclude to your own private space if you prefer. Eco washing facilities are dotted around the site, bringing some rustic chic to your stay, and we offer all of our guests locally made, luxury wash products that are also good for the environment. Not to mention a friendly, warm Welsh welcome.
Food and drink

Blue Sky is less than a 10-minute drive away from site, situated just off the Bangor high street. A cosy place to enjoy a coffee with some good breakfast and unique lunch options – the Nduja and Eggs comes recommended – its menu is ‘considerately sourced’ from local suppliers, with fair trade tea and coffee and craft beer, too. Booking is recommended (01248 355444). Kyffin Cafe is also alongside the Bangor high street, its first vegetarian and vegan cafe, with fresh food made on-site daily from a menu consisting of foods from around the world. There’s a pretty garden area, too, with seating beneath a gazebo. Torna a Surriento is an authentic Italian restaurant that’s right next to Bangor pier, with dine-in and take-away options. Enjoy the wood-fired pizzas with views of the Menai Strait.

Nearby attractions

Plenty of information is supplied by hosts Bethan and Jacob upon your arrival, with them both born and raised in north Wales and therefore full of knowledge about the local area. You’re a brief drive away from Bangor high street – the longest high street in Wales – and further on is Penrhyn Castle. Visitors might recognise the grand 19th-century stone castle as a filming location in The Watchmen TV series, full of art and history with walled gardens to explore. The small island Anglesey is a 10-minute drive across the Menai Suspension Bridge, with 125 miles of coastline providing a variety of beaches to visit on a hot day – try the sandy Blue Flag beach of Benllech or enjoy some windsurfing at Rhosneigr.
