A pair of yurts with hot tubs on a farm between Perth and Crieff

The name Bachilton Farm Holidays conures up a place that’s out in the sticks. A rural getaway where you’ll find yourself surrounded by sheep, waving at passing tractors and idling away days walking in wellies. For the most part, such imaginings are pretty accurate. The two yurts at this site offer glamping in quiet countryside – but that’s not all. They’re also close to the city and not just any city but Scotland’s fairest: historic, riverside Perth. It all makes for a stay where glamping guests can enjoy Perthshire culture and nature in equal measure.

For much of the year Bachilton Farm’s central hub, in the middle of its 740 agricultural acres, is reserved for weddings. Brides and grooms who fancy a countryside backdrop to their big day come here in their droves, won over, no doubt, by both the setting and the easy-to-reach location, just nine miles from Perth. But when wedding bells aren’t ringing, a few glampers get their chance – and the same things that make this a lucky location for weddings recommend it to glamping guests.

Each yurt is set in a little fenced garden with a hot tub, looking across fields towards the hills. Inside, the beds are made and there’s a log burner too. Facilities are private; there’s a shower and toilet for each yurt. And a short walk away is the only communal spot, a sheltered seating area and a communal campfire pit by a pond. Up to six can sleep in each yurt making them perfect for family getaways but it’s couples who seem to enjoy it most here. The solitude, the hot tub, the grown-up days out on long walks or in the city make it so, along with the on-site whisky distillery of course. Did we forget to mention that?

Strathearn Distillery is housed in former farm buildings just behind the yurts. If you’re a whisky fan, get in touch before your stay to book a tour and tasting. Beyond that, you can wander the farm on foot and there’s acres to explore. The market town of Crieff is close by and it’s not only a lovely place to visit (and a bit of a foodie hub) but it’s a starting place for yet more walks and outdoor adventure. In the other direction, and closer still, is Perth, itself just an hour from both Edinburgh and Glasgow by road or rail. Whether you’re looking to be near the city and its surrounds or hoping to escape it, the proximity is a plus.

Moss Yurt
Cosy, well equipped yurt.
The yurt was great. Log burner was perfect for keeping us warm, with loads of logs provided! Peaceful surroundings, but well located for Crieff and Perth as well. Beds were comfortable. Hot tub was an added bonus. If planning to cook, bring camping essentials (e.g. camping stove, pots, washing up sponge, tea towel). Staff on site were very helpful.

Yurt was spacious well furnished and clean. Hot tub was fantastic with views across country side. Weather was good which added to the Experience and time at the Yurt.

Moss Yurt
Relaxing luxury
We had the most wonderful time staying at Moss Yurt: the location was great for all the sights we wanted to visit, the bed was comfy, and the hot tub was lovely with a fabulous view. Access to a fridge and covered gas BBQ were a bonus, and the wood burning stove kept the yurt snug and warm late at night. Would definitely recommend and we are likely to book again sometime!

From the host
The farm is made up of 740 acres of land and the views are totally different depending on the season that you visit. In winter we have beautiful frosty mornings, spring we have blossom trees in full swing, summer has fields of golden wheat and plenty of lush green trees and in autumn the whole place turns beautifully orange as the leaves change. Our site is ideally situated between Perth and Crieff both having many local activities, and a variety of attractions on offer. Each yurt comes with comfy double bed, a double futon and two single futons, this cosy space sleeps up to 6 guests. There is parking for up to two cars at each yurt, a hot tub and outdoor decking to enjoy the plentiful views. Each yurt has private access to a shower block with a toilet, sink, shower & hair dryer. They also each have a hut with a gas BBQ, fridge, kettle & utensils for cooking. There is a fully stocked log shed located behind the yurts to keep your fire burning.
Nearby attractions

The farm is home to the Strathearn Distillery, which you can visit if you book a tour and tasting in advance. You can also book in for on-site activities including archery, axe throwing and even Highland games (although there is a minimum group size of eight). There's plenty of great walking in the immediate area, with routes around the 740-acre farmland that surrounds the site. Off site, there's paddleboarding with Paddle Surf Scotland at Loch Fruechie, 20 miles from site and whitewater rafting. The historic and compact city of Perth is about nine miles from site. There's lots to see and do there including The Black Watch Museum (01738 638152). In the other direction, about the same distance is the market town of Crieff, which is home to lots of independent shops and eateries, as well as the Caithness Glass Centre. For history lovers there's Scone Palace (01738 552300), 10 miles from Bachilton Farm, while families might want to head out to Auchingarrich Wildlife Park (01769 679469), 18 miles away. The edge of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park is not much further.

Food and drink

Gloagburn Farm Shop & Restaurant (01738 840864) is the place to stock up on local goodies or to head to for a good lunch, coffee or afternoon tea. It's about five miles from Bachilton Farm. For a meal out, or a takeaway, try Chatni Indian Restaurant (01738 8405 5) in the nearby village of Methven, where you can also visit the local pub, The Methven Arms (01738 842782), less than three miles from site. Cake 32, in Crieff, comes recommended for coffee and cake but ice cream fans should head straight for Stewart Tower Dairy (01738 710044), 14 miles away, where ice cream made on the farm is served alongside coffee, cakes and lunches.
