Ayrshire Airstream’s owners proudly refer to it as “Scotland’s first Airstream B&B” – an American travel trailer completely renovated to provide the perfect blend of peace, quiet, and fun all in a secluded glade. The trailer has been transformed into a tiny house with luxuries such as a tiled wetroom and wood-burning stove, and a private lawn on which you can mix cocktails at its tiki bar or soak up your surroundings in the wood-fired hot tub. It’s a little romantic world within a half-acre of land, so it’s no wonder it’s become a hotspot for engagements, with more than a few couples deeming it the ideal spot to pop the question.
Hosts Sarah and Jack acquired the ‘78 Airstream Excella and then promptly took out anything related to its travelling origins, replacing it with proper furnishings like a king-size bed and a well-equipped kitchen. It sits atop a large wooden deck – complete with outdoor chairs to look out onto the surrounding woodland – that’s all undercover to keep it “Scotland-proof” should the weather take a turn for the worse.
Get your provided cocktail shaker at the ready and serve up a mojito or two at the tiki bar, before retreating to the designated waterside “chill zone” – relaxing hammock chairs set around the firepit, right next to the stream running through the site. The wood-fired hot tub can take a couple of hours to heat, so make sure you throw in some logs before sinking into it for the evening.
Privacy is paramount here. You’ll check yourself in – the keys are appropriately located in an American-style mailbox – and the only company you’ll have is the nearby wildlife. Keep an eye out for hedgehogs and stoats, and your hosts’ pet chickens also freely roam around the premises. You’ll also have your own access to some countryside walks – the site is along the 15km Irvine Valley trail, with a walk around marshlands in one direction and one along a dike in the other. In these surroundings, it's easy to see why romance is always in the air.
After parking up, you’ll enter a woodland path, then cross over a small footbridge into the secret glade. The site is a 1/2 acre clearing with a lawn ringed by mature trees. You can enjoy a morning coffee at the waterside seating area, or at the campfire spot with its hanging hammock chairs, and nap later on in the tree hammock. The Airstream also has a huge covered deck providing a space to enjoy the view whatever the weather. The romantic wood-burning hot tub is ringed with warm festoon lights all round creating a magical feeling at night. And the centrepiece - at the top of the hill, you’ll be cosy in the tiny house! The interior is surprisingly open and bright, with distinct bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room zones. A few genuine 1970s bits and bobs interspersed amongst modern design elements adds to the charm. It’s a space designed for fun and relaxation.Guest accessPark in our farm car park in the dedicated 'guests' spot.Generally guests want to stay in the glamping site and that works for us too, feel free to explore the woods on the other side of the bridge though if you like.Galston is a 25 minute walk away or less if you're a fast walker! You can take the scenic route over the dyke just next to our farm. To do that, walk up the driveway to where the fenced woodland ends and simply go right . Or you can walk along the road towards Loudoun Castle and turn right on the A719.There's also West Loudoun Equestrian Centre next door which offers riding.
